Is it OK to be a fan of teams from different schools?

he's OSU all the way, he just wasn't a big enough fan to make me like them in basketball when I was growing up. he also wasn't as hot as my Syracuse grad social studies teacher

he's the only one in the local Kiwanis bracket to pick OSU to win it all out of 225 entries.

If OSU had Duke/Cuse success in bball in the 90s & 00s & they had OSU's, would you be OSU basketball fans?

Considering I wasn't old enough to pay much attention to basketball in the 90's and only started paying attention to Duke basketball around 02-03 (AFTER their last championship), I would say that it wouldn't make much of a difference.

As mentioned, I inherited my Duke basketball fandom from my dad. My OSU football fandom came naturally...

If you had asked me "If Duke had OSU success in football in the 90s & 00s, would you be a Duke football fan?" my answer would definitely be a resounded heeeeellllll no. I feel "icky" even thinking about it.

:slappy: I like how you emphasized "AFTER", as if you're the type of fan to start following a team BEFORE they win something.

Meh...

...it's kind of like enjoying a band before the go mainstream...

...or calling out a farm system kid before he hits the big leagues...

You might feel cooler and a little smarter because you caught on before they actually did something, but it doesn't mean you like them for any different reasons than the rest of the folks that consider themselves fans...

It's cute how much you care, Mike...

I'd tell you how much I appreciate the attention but judging by your previous responses, I'm not too sure your vocabulary can handle anything you'd hear outside of a junior-high halo party. :wink2:

Best of wishes sweet-cheeks.

Oh, and to save you the trouble later:

yeah, there are a lot of LSU football fans that popped up AFTER we started winning titles.

Where were these assholes when we were suffering through the 90's?

sure it's different.
you like 'em BECAUSE they're successful

we like just because.
successful or not, we're there for our teams.
and have been since we were too young to walk.

So you were an LSU field hockey fan long before you even knew what field hockey was? Can you HONESTLY say that? Were you watching swim meets on TV as an infant? Did you attend the first game of the volleyball season before you were able to stand up on your own?

It's the same thing that's been tossed about the entire thread...

I do have a serious question for y'all though.

I wasn't truly introduced to football and basketball until the late 90's early 00's. I didn't have much of an interest in anything outside of baseball growing up. I watched Duke, Ohio State and any other basketball games my dad watched and payed attention when he watched Ohio State football on Saturday mornings...but I didn't really have the interest to "choose" a team to call my own.

WITH THAT SAID, I was quite literally raised in old Fulton County Stadium and Turner Field...went to nearly 100 Braves games before I was LITERALLY even able to walk. Braves baseball is in my blood, and no matter whether or not they were successful throughout the 90's I would've been a fan for 3 major reasons.

1) I love baseball
2) I grew up in Atlanta
3) My parents took me to games

I basically had no choice...

So here's the question...

Is the fact that I'm an Atlanta Braves diehard any less meaningful because I happened to form my allegiance to them during a period of great success?

I don't see any way you can't say "no".

I've had no choice but to form my allegiances to Ohio State football and Duke basketball during times of success in both programs simply because of the fact that I was not around long enough to do any differently.

It's absolutely asinine, ludicrous and simply put illogical to say that someone who became interested in a sport and found a team to associate themselves with is somehow less of a fan than someone else simply because that team was successful during said persons' fanhood inception.

It's equally as moronic to say that someone is NOT a true fan of a team if they didn't choose to follow that team when they "weren't good". If that were the case there would be nobody under the age of 30 that y'all would declare a "true fan" of just about every major football and basketball power in the country, since most of them have been doing what they've been doing since the late 80's early 90's.

Someone needs to work out a chart for me that shows the period for when each program in the history of sport was "not good" so as to decipher who are truly fans of the program or not.

:wink2:

It's a silly argument, all you have to do is think about it...

:oh:

Fail. You seriously are missing most of the points being made in this thread.
