Rob Oller commentary: Tribe reverts to woeful Indians of old

In the dark days when hot dog vendors outnumbered fans in the stands, Cleveland Indians seasons ended on Mother's Day, when the Tribe trailed the division leader by a dozen games or more.
Thirty years later and the Indians have improved by two summer holidays -- Father's Day and Independence Day. They entered last night's game against Chicago last in the American League Central, 11 1/2 games behind the White Sox. By the time the Fourth of July fireworks light the sky, the Tribe's season could be over.
The manager said so.
Times must be desperate when Eric Wedge breaks from his flat-line approach by declaring one part of the schedule more important than another, the way he did before Cleveland opened its current eight-game road swing through AL Central rivals Chicago, Minnesota and Detroit.
Wedge called the trip a make-or-break situation, comparing it with a September pennant race in terms of how players handle the pressure. So far, the Indians haven't handled it well, losing the first two games before last night.

Broom and doom: Tribe swept out of Chicago on Pierzynski's 10th-inning homer, 6-5

Thursday, July 03, 2008 Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter

Chicago- Grady Sizemore kept giving the Indians chances, but in the end it came down to the bullpen, and this year that's not a good situation for manager Eric Wedge.
One night after Joe Borowski turned a 2-1 lead into a 3-2 loss in the 10th inning, Masa Kobayashi used a near carbon copy of the defeat. After pitching a scoreless ninth in the rain Wednesday, Kobayashi gave up a leadoff homer to A.J. Pierzynski in the 10th as Chicago completed a three-game sweep with a 6-5 victory at U.S. Cellular Field.
"Frustrated," said Sizemore, when asked to describe the state of the Indians. "This can change day to day, week to week. But we have a long way to go."

INDIANS INSIDER
Cleveland Indians manager Eric Wedge to talk with General Manager Mark Shapiro today

Thursday, July 03, 2008 Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
Chicago -- Manager Eric Wedge will meet with his coaching staff today in Minneapolis. He'll talk to General Manager Mark Shapiro, assistant general manager Chris Antonetti and others in the Tribe's front office at Progressive Field by conference call.
"We're going to be meeting, we're going to be talking," Wedge said before Wednesday's series finale against the White Sox. "We have a lot of things we have to work through right now."
So is this it? Does the white flag go up and pitchers C.C. Sabathia, Paul Byrd and third baseman Casey Blake and others go on the market?

CHICAGO Today is anything but an off-day for the Tribe.

The Indians' brain trust, including GM Mark Shapiro, will talk today about the direction of their struggling baseball team as they prepare to continue an eight-game road trip in Minnesota on Friday.

Manager Eric Wedge would not get into specifics, but it's clear that some changes could be on the horizon.

"We'll be working (today) to try to solidify some things, make some decisions and work from there," Wedge said. "... We have a lot of questions that need to be answered."

The No. 1 question Wednesday was Joe Borowski's future as the Tribe closer. Borowski blew a save opportunity Tuesday night, making him just 6-for-10 on save chances this season. His ERA is 7.56.

There is gonna be no quick fix period. Hopefully this is the official waving of the white flag (the unofficial happened about 6 weeks ago). I could see fairly early on that this was gonna be a bad year, and even though there was a brief glimmer of hope in mid-May, it really has been. It's just a roster of spare parts with a few good pieces. Grady has been great, but the other two "good pieces" (Victor and Pronk) have broken down this season. I'm fairl optimistic Victor can return to his old self, Pronk I'm not sure. Hopefully we can at least derive some excitement from some impending moves. CC will net us some pretty good prospects, hopefully at least one that may be ready to contribute next season. Byrd and Blake may get us some mid-range prospects that can help a year or two down the road. For all the grief we give Blake, he's a solid hitter and can play multiple positions, something that should make him somewhat attractive to a competitor. I haven't heard any rumors about Lee, but they should listen to offers for him too. If they can get a couple good prospects for him, they should jump on it. He's been phenominal this season, but very up and down throughout his career. I'd love for them to be able to deal Peralta, but I don't think many teams are interested in a pudgy SS with no range. Dellucci is dead weight as well, but I doubt there'd be much interest in him.

There simply cannot be a worse bullpen in the league.
The worst Tribe bullpen I can remember is the '05 version followed closely by the '03, but this one may trump them for overall futility.

Eh, his first inning of work is always the tricky one.
No kidding.
