Indians Tidbits (2008 season)

NFBuck;1198561; said:
There is gonna be no quick fix period. Hopefully this is the official waving of the white flag (the unofficial happened about 6 weeks ago). I could see fairly early on that this was gonna be a bad year, and even though there was a brief glimmer of hope in mid-May, it really has been. It's just a roster of spare parts with a few good pieces. Grady has been great, but the other two "good pieces" (Victor and Pronk) have broken down this season. I'm fairl optimistic Victor can return to his old self, Pronk I'm not sure. Hopefully we can at least derive some excitement from some impending moves. CC will net us some pretty good prospects, hopefully at least one that may be ready to contribute next season. Byrd and Blake may get us some mid-range prospects that can help a year or two down the road. For all the grief we give Blake, he's a solid hitter and can play multiple positions, something that should make him somewhat attractive to a competitor. I haven't heard any rumors about Lee, but they should listen to offers for him too. If they can get a couple good prospects for him, they should jump on it. He's been phenominal this season, but very up and down throughout his career. I'd love for them to be able to deal Peralta, but I don't think many teams are interested in a pudgy SS with no range. Dellucci is dead weight as well, but I doubt there'd be much interest in him.
.
I agree, for the most part, with what you have said especially regarding Hafner and we are stuck with him for at least two, is not three, two more years. I don't think Victor will ever have the season he had a year ago but I do agree that I think you will be back to fairly good form. I just hope that they don't rush him. I agree with you regarding JP. While he has a very friendly contract, his limited range in the field along with his very streaky hitting will be a drawback in any trade talk. Dellucci is just dead weight sitting at the Indians payroll. I think he has another year remaining and maybe a miracle can happen next season. Stranger things have happened but I think that's wishful thinking on my part. I agree that Blake is a versatile player but I do not believe he is an everyday player for a contending team. He too is a very streaky hitter and has been on one of his streets for about the past three weeks and I don't think that they are going to dangle him. I just saying that the Indians management along with Wedge love him too much to part ways with him. I would not want the Indians to trade Lee. While the market might be very good for him without CC , he is our only veteran pitcher and we have to wish that Carmona can come back with his old form. I don't know how much Byrd could get is in a trade. I don't think there are many teams that trade for batting practice pitchers. I think we need to start to rebuild and start now. We do have some decent prospects at Akron and Kingston and hopefully if Shapiro can get some decent prospects in some trades we will be back in 2010. I think the only thing that might change the whole scenario would be for Hafner to come back and hit like he did 1 1/2 seasons ago but again that is very wishful thinking.
The trade of Phillips is not one I hold over his head
The only reason that I hold this over Shapiro's head is because Wedge could not deal with Phillips and who is Wedge's boss. I really don't blame the hitting coaches for Phillips' failure with the Indians. That lies solely on Wedge's shoulders IMO. One other thing that I was sort of disagree with you on is that if the Indians were so enamored with Blake as their third baseman 1 1/2 seasons ago when they really gave it a 2nd baseman why did they go after the rights of the Japanese third baseman who eventually ended up with Tampa Bay. Instead of trading Kevin K, we should have moved Blake to second base if he is so versatile (I know that you have never said that he could play second base that is coming out of my pile hole:wink2:).

I will agree with you that Shapiro's biggest failure is his stand pat attitude but he did sign some guys to some long-term contracts when they were doing well but now the are injured. I guess that's a risk you take and these have come back to bite him. However if he doesn't do something pretty soon, I think we will be in for a longer ride going down then we are now.

Cleveland Indians to shake up bullpen; Borowski likely out as closer

Minneapolis --- One of the first decisions the Indians will act upon as the result of today's meeting with manager Eric Wedge, GM Mark Shapiro and the coaching staff will be reshaping the bullpen.

The changes will start to go into effect for Friday's series opener against the Twins in the Metrodome. The Indians' bullpen has the highest ERA in the AL with the fewest saves.

Struggling Joe Borowski is expected to be replaced as closer. Wedge could name one pitcher to replace him or go to a committee of Masa Kobayashi, Rafael Betancourt and Rafael Perez.

Borowski, who led the AL with 45 saves last year, has been injured and ineffective this year. He's 6-for-10 in save situations with a 12.46 ERA in those games. He's allowed 12 earned runs in 8 2/3 innings.
The opposition is hitting .395 against him in save situations with four homers.

The Indians will also call up at least one reliever from Class AAA Buffalo before Friday's game. He'll take the spot of Rick Bauer, who will be designated for assignment. Bauer pitched well in Buffalo, earning 15 saves in 17 chances with a 1.54 ERA, but he hardly pitched after the Indians promoted him on June 4.

AP photoHow much longer will C.C. Sabathia be wearing Tribe blue?

There's little hope to be found amongst Tribe fans one day after their second straight extra innings loss to Chicago. The Indians currently stand at 37-48, 12.5 games behind the first-place White Sox.
Here's a look at your comments from various blog posts on cleveland.com:

'Oh the view is so sweet from down here. Things are always looking up in Cleveland.' -ScutFarcus

'I think some people are underestimating the loss of the guys on the DL. You can't take two starters out of your rotation and your #3 & #4 hitter and expect to be the same team.' -Gametime28

'Teams have bad seasons. It's our turn this year.' -kcellis05

'What can you do? get the best possible offer for CC and take it.' -brownstown19

'Dolan and his stooges have destroyed what Jacobs, Hart and Hargrove created.' -Fatzo

There simply cannot be a worse bullpen in the league.

If they aren't going to trade C.C., they may as well make him the closer.

I will bet all of my worldly goods that C.C. will not be and Indian next year. The ownership is not committed to winning and has never been committed to winning. Follow the $$$$.

Just tell me one person that they have EVER paid for and I mean paid because they are a franchise player. Not some other overpaid chump in the loosest sense of the word. Please don't come back with one year wonder Pronk or a small market team for chris sakes. Milwaukee wants him, Minny won the series etc etc.

They sell the team because the owners can make a profit every other year due to an increase in the teams value and as long as that happens we are SHIT because of debt service alone.

One day my friends you will realize you've been conned.

I don't blame the ownership or management of the tribe in the least...

When your two biggest hammers go to the DL
and two of your top starters join the 'club'

No one is going to be very successful...

We'll miss CC a ton... but the fact remains.. Cleveland cannot compete with the monster cities and the immense media revenue that comes with that...

I wasn't in favor of losing Colon... but look how that turned out...

Injuries happen... you deal with it...

Borowski designated for assignment
Indians to go with closer-by-committee in wake of decision
By Anthony Castrovince / MLB.com

CLEVELAND -- The Joe Borowski era has ended for the Indians.
Looking to repair their battered bullpen and get a better read on what the future holds, the Indians designated the veteran Borowski for assignment on Friday. The club also designated seldom-used right-hander Rick Bauer, making room for Jensen Lewis and Brian Slocum to make their returns from Triple-A Buffalo.

Hopefully, this is only the beginning of a major shakeup.

I can't find the proposed Milwaukee deal but supposedly they need a back end guy and might want RB along with CC for 3 guys/prospects. One of them is a third baseman. I could not find it in the link that was posted above. I will look some more.

Here is your official fresh news update from our friend Buster Olney during an in-inning conversation during the Yankees-Red Sox game on ESPN radio.

Olney said the Indians are pushing hard for either Escobar or JJ Hardy in a deal. (why when they have Peralta?) but the Brewers are likely not to bite unless the Indians were willing to give up a fading prospect Andy Marte. The current offer is CC Sabathia for OF Matt LaPorta, IF Taylor Green, and RHP John Axford which the Indians are balking at.
I have never really heard of these guys so I don't know what type of deal the Indians would be getting Laura if this is even feasible for both sides.

let fucking Marte go already he has done nothing and proven time after time that he sucks, but they continue to hold on to him

Uh, Pronk a one year wonder? Hardly. He was one of the most dangerous hitters in all of baseball from 2004-2006. Not exactly a one year wonder.

Thank God.

Please tell me they're not holding on to Andy Marte if teams want him. :smash:
