Indians Tidbits (2008 season)

Andy Marte (through July 4): 25 games, 0 home runs, 0 RBIs, 1 stolen base.

Man, I don't know how we would survive without that production.
I hate the reality of those stats... damn... I really wanted this kid to be a star.. especially after the similar situation with Cory Smith... wonder of they include Marte in deal with Brewers that Escobar could be considered to take over at short.. and move Peralta over to third...

Could have a pretty impressive left side with Escobar at short, Peralta at third and LaPorta in left

I don't blame the ownership or management of the tribe in the least...

When your two biggest hammers go to the DL
and two of your top starters join the 'club'

No one is going to be very successful...

We'll miss CC a ton... but the fact remains.. Cleveland cannot compete with the monster cities and the immense media revenue that comes with that...

I wasn't in favor of losing Colon... but look how that turned out...

Injuries happen... you deal with it...

Jersey Buck,

I would under normal circumstances agree with you. Every year there is always something. I used to bleed for all things Cleveland such as the cavs, tribe and clowns. It's futile because they are all inept but like a fox. Again follow the $$$$$$$$$. You can make excuses and throw out examples all day long and in the end you still have shit or turds. Corporate America could NEVER get away with the nonsense these team owners are pulling and laughing all the way to the bank on the backs of new fans. Someone HAS to be accountable.

Don't make excuses for them cleveland, make them accountable. You're better than that.

au contraire

Corporate America has to live and die by the P&L.. fans are not stockholders...

That being the case, very few teams, especially the Indians.. could ever do the things they do... If it wasn't for owners who are also sports fans, they would be much more restrictive in the deals they offer... the leagues would be much more lopsided...

This is basically the same team.. in fact going into the season.. was considered a superior team that very easily could have won the World Series had it not been for Sabathia's poor performance and/or Josh Beckett's phenom performance

If everyone stayed healthy and Sabathia hadn't pitched worse than our best starter at my local HS in the beginning of the season... we wouldn't have this discussion

What you actually want is an owner who is so rich that they would make deals that could approach the "win at ALL costs" of Steinbrenner .. and heck with the P&L...

Such owners don't buy Cleveland teams

The Brewers rumor is picking up a lot of steam and is centered around Matt LaPorta, Alcides Escobar, another prospect or two or possibly J.J. Hardy. I would be ecstatic if that were to go down. LaPorta looks like a stud and Escobar will be a very good SS allowing them to move Peralta to 3B (hopefully).

Also hearing rumors of a trade with the Dodgers for Blake DeWitt. The Tribe names being mentioned are Peralta, Gutz and Betancourt (not necessarily all 3). Would love that as well. Things could get pretty exciting in the next couple weeks off the field.

I'd say we have two of those guys with Gilbert and Lerner. Unfortunately, those leagues are responsible enough to have salary caps to try and level out the playing field more than baseball has ever achieved.

Now to shift our focus to our extended spring training for the second half of 08 and put on the calendar that the Browns training camp starts in a couple of weeks. Oh, of course we have to spend the next two years hearing how LeBron will be moving to any team but the Cavs.

If anyone has links to the stats/reviews on any of the players mentioned I would love to see their information.

LaPorta is a five-tool prospect. 23 years old. Was the 7th overall pick in the '07 draft out of U of Florida. He's currently in AA hitting .291-20-66 with 23 2B. Good looking player, looks like a future star. Not gonna contribute this year, but could compete for a starting corner OF spot next year. Alcides Escobar is a 21 year old SS also on Milwaukee's AA club. Currently hitting .333-6-42 with 16 SB. Basically, if that's the offer with another prospect or two thrown in, they're nuts not to jump on it. Milwaukee seems like they really want to make a run this year, so theyre an intriguing trade partner with a good minor league system.

Blake DeWitt is a 22 year old 3B playing in LA right now. Good fielder, currently hitting .260-5-34, not overly impressive, but he's very young with a lot of upside. He's made some spectacular plays in the field this season.

If these trades were to happen, we'd be on the right path real quick. I think a LaPorta/Sizemore/Francisco OF would be very nice next season. DeWitt could slide right in at 3rd and with the Dodgers looking for a SS, Peralta could be gone. You could have a DeWitt/Escobar/Cabrera/Garko infield which would be pretty damn solid.

:fingerscrossed:

This is a bad baseball team right now with some tradeable pieces. Shapiro needs to give us something to get excited about and that is a good place to start right there.

JJ Hardy is NOT in the deal. That is big for us. We don't want to lose him now, not if we are making a run this year. You can have Laporta - Green, low A prospect or Laporta - Escobar + prospect for CC + prospect....or something like that and I dont' think too many of us Brewer fans would be upset.

Laporta played 1B primarily and we converted him to OF because of the Prince. I'm hoping Gamel isn't in there because we need his left handed bat.

By the way - all you want to know about the Brewers minor leage players is available on the fan forum. They have about 3 minor league specialists on the site.

Didn't figure so with Escobar being one of the centerpieces, but his name was being mentioned. I'd much prefer Escobar anyway...he could be special. I'm very excited about this possibility and if it goes down, I'll be ecstatic and cut Shapiro a considerable amount of slack.

Need some excitement with the tribe getting whooped yet again tonight. :!

Also been hearing Weeks' name thrown around in different possiblities --- I hope so actually. Laporta + Weeks + whatever for CC. Done!

Anyway here is the website top 50 minor leaguers based on one of our experts opinions. They do this each month.

Brewerfan.net - Toby's Power 50
Meh, weeks does nothing for me...he looks like another josh Barfield to me. We already have Asdrubal and Barfield, so not sure why they'd want another 2B. Two high-level prospects will probably be the hinging point...that being LaPorta and Escobar. With Hardy already at SS, I'm hoping those are the two main guys. Anything else is gravy.

Meanwhile, all trade hoopla aside, the current Indians continue to make their case for being the worst team in baseball. Byrd serves up batting practice yet again as he continues to destroy any trade value he once had and the neutred-calfpen got raked for 6 runs and 7 hits in 2.2 innings of work. Blech....

The only way to possibly salvage this season is for some major trades to go down.
