Major rebuilding not in Shapiro's plans

MINNEAPOLIS: General Manager Mark Shapiro does not anticipate a full-scale rebuilding program for the Indians.
''I believe if guys hadn't gotten hurt ? even with the offense struggling and the disappointing bullpen ? we would still be in the hunt, though maybe not in first place,'' he said. ''Next year, I think we will be contenders, as well.''
Shapiro expects to alter the roster between now and April, but he does not believe improving the team's win-loss record rests primarily on acquiring outsiders.
''The most important thing is to get back our injured players,'' he said. ''Having those players return is bigger than anything we can do externally.''
He is talking about starters Fausto Carmona and Jake Westbrook, plus catcher Victor Martinez and DH Travis Hafner. All but Westbrook are expected to play this season.

This man is our GM. Rememeber 2006 genius? That's the last time the bullpen was this bad (actually, not quite as bad) and you were not even close to competitive. Of course getting those guys back healthy is key, but whether he wants to admit it or not, a large portion of the rest of the roster needs to be rebuilt. If he thinks those guys getting healthy next year is all it's gonna take to be competitive again, God help us...

Fucking Mastny is a one man rally monkey. As bad as the '03 and '06 bullpens were, this one is worse. 5-2 lead...vaporized. Some of that was Laffey who has come back to earth his last couple starts.

When this season is done, this will go down as one of, if not the worst Tribe teams of the Jacobs Field era. :shake:

Here's a side-by-side look ('03 ON THE LEFT) at the '03 Indians (at 68-94 the worst team of the Jacobs Field era, and the current joke of a team (through 86 games)...pacing used to determine leader.

Team BA: .254 / .246
Runs Per G: 4.3 / 4.4
Hit: 1413 / 714
Strikeouts: 1062 / 622
Doubles: 296 / 163
Triples: 26 / 9
Homeruns: 158 / 81
Base on balls: 466 / 278
SLG %: .401 / .393
OBP: .316 / .322
OBS: .717 / .715
Stolen Bases: 86 / 45

The '03 team led by such luminaries as Jody Gerut, Josh Bard, Matt Lawton and Ben Broussard is currently besting the '08 team in 8/12 of those categories.

ERA: 4.21 / 4.25
Saves: 34-46 / 14-27
SHO: 7 / 4
Hits: 1477 / 802
BAA: .236 / .272
Runs: 778 / 380
ER: 682 / 360
Base on balls: 501 / 244
Strikeouts: 943 / 537
WHIP: 1.48 / 1.37

The current team bests that awful '03 team in 5/9 categories.

Things are only gonna get worse this season, so they may well finish Worse than that 68-94 record. That '03 team was very young and one of the worst teams I've ever seen fundamentally. Ugh.

Here is the latest from the blog:

OK, guys, here's the latest. The Indians are trying to get the Brewers to add another top prospect to their LaPorta offer, such as Escobar or Gamel. The Brewers, who had to gulp hard just to include LaPorta, want them to take lesser players, such as Green and/or Cain. In the meantime, Philly is trying to sneak in and get Sabathia. The Indians will probably tell the Brewers to sweeten their offer or they'll trade Sabathia to Philly. Melvin will have to hold firm and risk losing Sabathia or really give up A LOT to get him. Rather than give up LaPorta AND Escobar or Gamel, they'd concentrate on Plan B pitchers such as Greg Maddux, Randy Wolf and A.J. Burnett. There's only so much you can give up for Sabathia, who is guaranteed to be lost to free agency after the season.

I can't imagine they are going to find anyone better than LaPorta in a deal..but who knows. this should be settled either tomorrow or Monday. They want CC in uni for Tuesday if it is going to happen.

I don't know what Phillie is said to be offering, but if MIL is the destination, I'd really like to see them get two top prospects in return...LaPorta and Escobar being my preference. Who knows, this team needs a lot of work regardless of if Shapiro wants to admit it or not. Our minor league system is pathetic due to bad drafting over the last decade.

well...... "THERE'S ALWAYS NEXT YEAR"....

Just as OSU has TBDBITL.. Cleveland has that shit saying "TANY" (see above).

What a disappointing year.. I think almost all the upper management should be fired. Starting with the GM who decided the team was perfect the way it was from last year minus Kenny minus Nixon. Moron's.... but anywho GO TRIBE!!

In the dark days when hot dog vendors outnumbered fans in the stands, Cleveland Indians seasons ended on Mother's Day, when the Tribe trailed the division leader by a dozen games or more.
Thirty years later and the Indians have improved by two summer holidays -- Father's Day and Independence Day. They entered......

Ummmm, the good (?) folks at the Dispatch don't celebrate Memorial Day?
