Indians Tidbits (2008 season)

How can Wedge not be ready to give up on this season?

Because its his job to pretend his team still has a chance. Unfortunately the upper management of this team seems to be putting up the same front. Hopefully they are shopping players and seeing what they can get for guys who will not be a part of this team's future.

I'm headed to the game tonight, not real excited for it, but at least I'll get to watch CC pitch in one of his last games as an Indian. He's been good to this franchise, and hopefully will continue to be so with whoever we get in trade.

so

Borowski has a 7.56 ERA a 1.92 WHIP and he has blown 4 saves in the 10 save chances he has had this year

but they continue to throw him out there

There really is no one else. I've tried to rationalize it myself. But the Indians do not have anything resembling a major league closer on their roster or anywhere in the farm system. That has been Shapiro's only major failure as a GM.

I would not call that his only major failure when he traded Brandon Phillips away for nothing. The trade of Kevin K for Barfield is not looking very good at this time with no young third baseman in the system. The signing of Dave D to a big contract does not say a whole lot about him either. I will grant you that he has made some good deals and signings but the bad ones outweigh the good ones IMO

Those weren't major failures at the time. I didn't hear anyone on here complaining about trading away the underachieving Phillips or trading Kouzmanoff for Barfield.

Those are just minor failures.

The trade of Phillips is not one I hold over his head. The kid had attitude problems and didn't show a whole lot when given the chance. If anything, the blame for that one lies on Derek Shelton/Eddie Murray for failing to help him develop as a hitter or the minor league coaching staffs. Trading Kouzmanoff for Barfield was a good deal at the time. We still had Blake and needed a 2B. Barfield was coming off a pretty nice rookie season. KK isn't exactly lighting it up, he strikes out a ton and we do have Wes Hodges in Akron. Hopefully he can develop.

Overall, I think Shapiro's biggest failures are what he hasn't done. Last year was a special season, but it was clear to see that they needed to improve to get over the hump...especially when so many of the teams around them went out and improved. Shapiro did jack-shit except bring in Kobayashi. Guess what? The bullpen is still wretched. After the 2005 season, instead of building on what they had coming off a promising season, he sits pretty much still and lets a couple key pieces of a strong 2005 bullpen walk away. Guess what? The 2006 team sucked because the bullpen was a mess.

Hopefully with the team basically in flames, he doesn't adopt the same "stand pat" mentality, because that could prove disastrous.

I would think an NL team would be much more aggressive in pursuit of C.C.

He owns the NL in interleague play. I get the feeling AL teams have "learned" how to approach him. He's been pitching well lately, but AL teams just have a book this year. NL teams don't.
