Blake gets big hits, Byrd delivers a gem
Shutout allows relievers to rest. Winning streak reaches eight games

CLEVELAND: Casey Blake is in danger of ruining his reputation. At least he hopes so.
It's no secret that for at least the past two seasons, Blake has struggled when he comes to the plate with runners in scoring position. But lately, that habit has been changing.
Saturday night at Jacobs Field, Paul Byrd threw his second shutout of the season, and Blake delivered twice with runners in scoring position as the Indians beat the Chicago White Sox 7-0 to extend their winning streak to eight games.
Blake singled in the fourth and again in the sixth, driving in a run each time to lift his average with runners in scoring position to .187.

Cliff Lee is called up to pitch out of bullpen
Adjustment needed, but lefty just wants to win
By Stephanie Storm Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Sunday, Sep 02, 2007
CLEVELAND: Cliff Lee figured he'd be recalled to the Indians once rosters expanded Saturday, a birthday present of sorts after turning 29 on Thursday.
The Indians left-hander who had been pitching at Triple-A Buffalo trying to regain the form that helped him go 18-5 with a 3.79 ERA just two seasons ago didn't know that the promotion would come with a caveat.
With young left-hander Aaron Laffey pitching well in his starting spot, the only place left for Lee is in the Indians bullpen.
''It's going to be new to me,'' Lee said, noting that he hadn't pitched in relief in his previous seven years of pro ball and only twice in college
Lee was one four Bisons players called up to the Tribe in the first wave of September promotions, joining right-hander Mike Koplove, outfielder Ben Francisco and infielder Luis Rivas.

to get to 90 wins, the Indians only need to go 11-14 (.440) over their last 25 games

Detroit must go 17-8 (.680) over their last 25 to reach that same mark

The Indians are only 3 games back from the best record in the Bigs.

impressive shit...

I'm more than happy to eat some crow after my claim of them being done.

I'm very impressed with the turnaround. It also helps that the Tigers appear to be back to being the Tigers. Just think though, if it wasn't for that six week swoon, we'd probably be 10-15 games up right now. I'm still not real comfortable with going into the postseason (assuming we get there) with Blowowski, but I guess it's all we have.

at this point, it seems as if cleveland could play .500 ball the rest of the way out, and win the central. detroit is struggling right now.

as i said previously, the yankees pitching wouldn't hold up over the stretch, and the mariners would come back to earth. the upcoming series with the Angels is a likely postseason preview.

The Indians certainly shouldn't be counting their chickens just yet. Even if they can put away the Tigers in the next couple of weeks, the key down the stretch is to pass the Red Sox and Angels for homefield advantage.

Welcome back:)

The pitching staff has carried this team (except maybe for Joe B.) The Indians do not have one position player in the Top 10 in any offensive category except for base stealing were Grady is about #10.

I am not counting my chickens yet. They still have 4 games left with the Angels and 3 with the Tigers close games against Seattle and Chicago.

While I am very optimistic Cleveland sports teams have not had much luck in the past. I will be happy if they just get into the playoffs and we can go from there.

Indians pitcher C.C. Sabathia (16-7) allowed six hits in eight shutout innings.

MINNEAPOLIS -- If the Cleveland Indians finish with the American League Central title at the end of this month, they can count their mastery of Johan Santana and the Minnesota Twins as one of the reasons for the success.
C.C. Sabathia threw eight shutout innings, and the Indians topped Santana and the Twins once more with a 5-0 victory yesterday that extended their lead over the defending division champs to 10 1/2 games.
Cleveland is 12-4 against Minnesota and 5-0 against the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner this season.

Cleveland Indians use a watchful eye in on-deck circle

Tuesday, September 04, 2007 Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
Minneapolis -- Franklin Gutierrez and Ryan Garko try to angle themselves as far behind the catcher as possible when they're waiting on deck. Sometimes Gutierrez doesn't even come out of the dugout until it's time to walk to the plate.
They did this before St. Louis outfielder Juan Encarnacion was struck in the left eye by a foul ball Friday night while waiting on deck to pinch hit at Busch Stadium. The injury may have permanently damaged Encarnacion's vision and ended his career.
Since Encarnacion's injury, the two Indians are even more attentive.

INDIANS NOTEBOOK Sizemore enters late, keeps streak going

MINNEAPOLIS: As usual, when Grady Sizemore got a day off, he played anyway, keeping his consecutive-game streak alive at 333.
This time, Sizemore entered the game as a pinch runner in the sixth and stayed in to play center field. In his only at-bat, he doubled in the seventh.
Did Sizemore gripe about being out of the lineup?
''I just told him,'' manager Eric Wedge said. ''I didn't leave it open for debate.''
