Indians Tidbits (2007 Season)

Blowkoski makes me wince every time he takes the mound, for sure...

However, I hate to bring up bad memories, but where exactly did trusting Mesa get anyone?

I'm just hoping run production stays on the upswing so we don't have to rely on a closer so much.

Oh, when Mesa killed us in '97 the trust was already gone. Like I said, 95-96 he was lights out. I think he played well during the playoffs those years, the Tribe just came up short.

Sure.

I guess my point is there's no safe bet, even with a "slam dunk" closer.

So... maybe in some sense, it's good to not have too much reliance on a closer. Maybe it will spur more care by the starters and middle relievers to not allow games to be so close, or encourage the hitters to work harder to tack on insurance runs...

Am I desperately trying to find a silver lining to the fact that Borowski terrifies me every time he picks up the ball? Yes.

Someone get the word to Wedge that he should substitute G?mez for Garko when he no longer needs his "bat" in the lineup. He is a defensive liability at 1st base and scares the hell out of me.

Maybe we will have the Division clinched when we get back from the West Coast or is that too much to ask.:)

Read you loud and clear. See my previous posts about Borowski, sucking and balls.

Well.... I seem to remember Jose Mesa choking up one particular lead in '97 or so... in October maybe?

I believe Omar Vizquel made a bit of snide commentary on that one in his book.

Well... the guy is a roller coaster... but... its September now... and he's what we've got.... so... yeah... pass the pepto.

Edit: Sorry Peaches, skipped right past your Jose Mesa knock... but... what the hell... he deserves it. Cocksucker. :)

Yeah, in '97 he killed us, but like I told Peach, he was not the same pitcher that year as the two previous years. Senior Slam had left the building. Ironically, wasn't this around the same time that he had some kind of rape allegations made against him?

Either rape... or... something about hookers and guns... not sure... maybe all 3.

Indians report
Indians report: Wedge won't be too patient
If Tribe starters falter, manager to quickly go for relief from bullpen
By Sheldon Ocker
Beacon Journal sportswriter

MINNEAPOLIS: Until the Indians either clinch the AL Central Division championship or are eliminated from contention, manager Eric Wedge will keep his bullpen on high alert.
That means if the starting pitcher or subsequent relievers appear to be heading into the abyss, Wedge will be on the mound in a flash, waving for a new pitcher to come to the rescue.
This policy began Tuesday night, when Aaron Laffey was excused after giving up five runs in the first four innings of what became an 11-inning win over the Minnesota Twins.
Tom Mastny followed Laffey, and Jensen Lewis replaced Mastny in the middle of an inning, before any damage could be done. Rafael Betancourt was used for two innings, and Joe Borowski got the save.
But after Laffey left, one or two pitchers were almost always warming up in the bullpen.

Sowers seems likely to start makeup game
MINNEAPOLIS: It is beginning to look like the Indians have been pointing toward using Jeremy Sowers to start the makeup game against the Seattle Mariners all along.
Sowers was not summoned from Buffalo, like fellow starter Cliff Lee, but not because he was deemed unworthy. Had Sowers been recalled from Triple-A, he would not have an opportunity to keep his arm stretched out to pitch at least five innings.
