Impending Assistant Coach Vacancies

Not thrilled with the let's hire guys Day or Urban have worked with before trend. Would prefer comprehensive searches for the BEST guys, not ones that Day and/ore Urban know even if they have decent track records.

Meh... it's how the world works. And I say that in a generally positive light. I'm still good with where things are going. I like the Hafley hire in terms of what he's produced on the field. We'll see what he can do as a recruiter.

And most of the world is "good enough" or "average". I'll "trust the coaches," but I'm not convinced that a 70 year-old from scUM is the best available choice. Would love to have a couple of GA's/analytics geeks whose entire job is to do the kind of research Gundy did and keep a running tab on future Yurcich's. http://www.espn.com/college-footbal...oys-mike-gundy-offensive-coordinator-internet

Regardless, I don't want to overstate my concerns. Neither of these guys have a Beck/Davis track record of sucking so I expect at least decent results, which, with Day's offensive acumen, might get us by.

I'm still on board with Day's thinking here... his defensive staff has...

1) The best F-ing DL coach in the country who gets "promoted" to associate head coach and gets money poured all over him. Long live the king.

2) A seasoned vet at DC who has an in-depth knowledge of our conference and has been a top-notch recruiter his entire career... who also can coach a mean DL.

3) A young-gun with a decade (at 39 years old!) of experience at both P5 and NFL. Seems to have recruiting chops on the east coast (which we need post-Schaino). He can take over Schiano's role defensively.

Now we need two more... Here's what I want.

4) A proven LB coach that can fill in the co-DC role when Mattison retires. Someone like Freeman or Washington. Gotta be able to COACH.

5) A safety coach who is a maniac on the recruiting trail. I want some Combs-esque energy like Hartline is bringing on the offensive side.

That would be a dynamite staff for Day.

#4 I think has to be Washington. I can't see Freeman coming in for a position coach role. Frankly, if it is Washington, I'm pretty ok with that. For no other reason than to kick tsun in the left nut after we kicked them in the right with Mattison.

#5 I have zero clue as to who this is going to be. Zero clue. Looking forward to being surprised and delighted. What I will say is that if Day does with Mike Doss what Urban did with Hartline... I'd be giddy.
