Impending Assistant Coach Vacancies

Not thrilled with the let's hire guys Day or Urban have worked with before trend. Would prefer comprehensive searches for the BEST guys, not ones that Day and/ore Urban know even if they have decent track records.
Day is a first time HC at one of the top 3-5 jobs in ALL of college football... I would EXPECT he hires people he knows because he doesn’t to worry about chemistry yet as he steps into this major undertaking... this is Urban going from OC or WR coach at ND to HC at Florida... Day didn’t rise through the ranks at smaller programs so I would expect him to take less risk on hiring guys at this point in time... if we’re 10 years into it and he’s still hiring buddies.. well we can talk about it then

Bucknuts has also learned Bill Davis will not return as Ohio State's linebackers coach.

We have confirmed OSU has reached out to Al Washington, but we have not confirmed if Washington is headed to his hometown of Columbus.

At this point, sources at Ohio State say it is still up in the air in terms of what will happen with OSU cornerbacks coach Taver Johnson. We will keep you posted on that.

I'm in "trust the coaches" mode. As I said earlier, these two seem to have good track records, so I'm not in Tim Beck/Bill Davis WTF? mode.

That said, as a general matter it feels like a truncated process and not the best one to follow (in fairness, others may have rejected overtures). While I could be wrong on some of these as it's hard to know every coach's full history, Meyer's "guys I or someone on staff had worked with" included Smith, Studrawa, Schiano, Davis, and Beck (and in fairness Marotti and Pantoni) and his "guys we don't know" included Herman, Warinner, Coombs, Johnson, and Wilson (and in fairness Withers and Grinch). Also, there's no guarantee that a "known" commodity provides good chemistry.

yeah agreed. we’re on the same page I think, i was just reacting to the its never enough group out there.... but i feels condensed maybe because he’s trying to make these hires and do a good finishing push to signing day... Also there may be a number of folks who balked at working for a first time HC at a major school... even if the money is right...

We all want the best for OSU.. I hope these guys are... I hope if push comes to shove Day fires guys who dont perform or finds them other landing spots...

Kind of a mixed bag today. Definitely excited about Hafley, but I'm 50-50 on Mattison and I preferred to see Studrawa leave.
I actually don't mind Stud. Feel like the line got better throughout the year, some of the backups played well when they came in. The one weakness was Jordan's snapping at times and 1st Team Big Ten Prince, but Stud isn't quite on Davis and Beck level yet.

Not finished, but definitely an 'eh' type day after hearing some of the names being thrown around. Should still finish better than the last two years on the defensive side at least.

No, he's not. But they need to be significantly more consistent, talented, and deeper to compete with Bama, Clemson. I don't see him getting the OL to make another jump.
