If defensive staff changes are coming, who should OSU be looking to hire?

I would not mind leaving Luke to be the sole DC as long as Heacock is advising (if we can't get Heacock back as DC) and bringing in a real DB coach. Ideal scenario to me is Fickell and Vrable just coach their positions, Combs does ST and recruiting, Withers leaves for FAU, we get a DB coach that knows what he is doing, and we bring in either Heacock or a big name for DC.
I just can't see how Fick takes a demotion. I would love to see Heacock involved but how can Fick handle that?

Also, I have said this before but I just don't get Urb's total complete fascination with recruiting prowess being of upmost importance. Give me a coach that actually knows how to coach please! I mean, I love the fiery attitude and motivational locker room speeches but what exactly has Coombs done that impresses anyone? I think athletes today care more about coaches that put guys in the league than a charismatic guy. Between the brand name that is THE Ohio State and Urban's skills I just don't know why a coach has to be an A+ recruiter if it comes with a D+ for coaching. That's not a winning formula to me. I guess I will forever be impacted by the impressive play of MSU against us. I have a hard time believing their defensive players are superior athletes but as a unit they totally, completely embarrassed our D and that's damn hard for me to take. It looked like the silver bullets when they were playing D and the silver ballet when we were. That really pisses me off.

Listening to Urban will be interesting. Especially what he doesn't say..unless some leave for other jobs ..I see little change, maybe changes in responsibilities.ie. Combs ST only, Withers secondary, Fickell DC, and then bring in a LB coach. Urban couches it by having cleaner and clearer communication. They still need a defensive play-caller on the field and I hope Johnson or Mitchell can do it.

I don't have any suggestions for defensive staff candidates, but a part of me worries that the D staff isn't going anywhere but we could lose coaches like Herman, Warinner, or Drayton, and that worries me a bit. Don't get me wrong, I would wish them the best, but then Coach Meyer would have to find somebody to fill their shoes, and that wouldn't be easy.

Regardless, right now, I hope the staff is just focused on recruiting and preparing for Clemson. In the meantime, perhaps Coach Meyer is drawing up a list of candidates. We'll see...

The one thing that scares me is the alignment of the staff.

If you listen to interviews with Urban, he always talks about the alignment of the staff and how it went wrong at Florida. He constantly uses Oregon (and Chip Kelly) as his example of alignment of staff.

If/when we switch out assistant coaches -- which will happen -- that's the one thing I'll keep an eye on. For some reason, the alignment at Florida went wrong when he was replacing assistants.

I'm not really sure what coaching "alignment" means. I know Meyer started to have problems when he lost guys that had been with him for a long time and had to replace them with new coaches. He ended up doing a lot more himself because he didn't trust the new coaches as much. I'm hoping that he is doing a better job now of keeping his eye on coaches in other programs that would be worth poaching to fill holes. I think Herman was a guy like that. He had no previous relationship with Meyer before tOSU.

I think this is all wild speculation, though. The more I think about it, unless a HC opportunity comes along, I doubt Fickell is going anywhere. Same with Withers. There is a talent deficiency right now. I'd be willing to bet Urban gives them one more year to get some of these younger guys playing at a respectable level.
