If defensive staff changes are coming, who should OSU be looking to hire?

and not many that can throw the cash like we can.

Texas and USC are the one's I'm looking at.

Pay or big name doesn't matter to me, I just want to see a better scheme on defense (or better coaching).

Chris Spielman as LB coach (kidding, he's not coaching). Oh, and Kirk Herbstreit as QB Coach (I couldn't stop laughing when that rumor was going around in 2011).

Just Thinking aloud, What would it mean if everyone returns?

It would mean that Coach Meyer feels that talent and depth are the primary issues. It would mean that with a full compliment of scholarships he feels the problem can be fixed by getting more of his players in place and fewer holdovers from a team that was 6-7 two seasons ago.

I don't agree that's the (entire) problem, but if that's the way it plays out I think that's the philosophy that would be driving those decisions.

This isn't a serious suggestion, but let's look at the most accomplished defensive back we've had in recent history, Antoine Winfield. His NFL career seems to be pretty much history, and it'd be interesting to see whether he's one of the few excellent players who also can teach.

I'd rather see that "tryout" somewhere else, though ...

I don't know, but Kerry Combs cannot coach the secondary next year. I like Luke to stay. Withers, who is listed as safety coach in addition to AHC and Co-DC, I think also needs to go.
I would like to see the defensive coaching staff structured to where we have Luke as a LB coach and Co-DC, and someone to fill the role of secondary coach and Co-DC. With all of the changes out in the PAC it would be nice to steal a secondary coach that is used to all of that high-flying offense and bring him here to fill that someone roll I described above. The Luke, who know traditional Big Ten offenses can work with someone who is used to west coast offenses to develop a more balanced defensive scheme. Right now our entire defensive coaching staff is born and bred in areas with traditional run-first power offenses. We need a secondary coach in that group that can balance it out.

With Sarkisian, I expect USC will stick to the incestuous route of recycling the same group of guys over and over again.
Not sure how pumped top-end Coordinators would be to step in for a lame duck Mack Brown. I suppose the attractive side would be impressing as the best coordinator with a foot in the door when Mack finally does leave. In the same vein as Muschamp was before imploding at Florida.
Speaking of, Muschamp taking a step back to DC here ?? His HC gig isn't going so well...

It could also mean that Meyer has some specific people in mind but they're not currently available. As glaring as these issues are, it doesn't make sense to fire people w/o having replacements that you believe are better. Not unlike why Fickell was "interim HC" for a year.
They could've blown it and hired somebody like Hoke, but the University bided their time for a candidate of appropriate stature to become available.
