HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

The biggest question remaining with this Ohio State football team

With the season opener just days away, the Ohio State football team has one big question they still have to answer.

The Ohio State football team has just a few days before the 2024 season begins. They have done a lot of work this offseason. Adding players from the transfer portal, bringing in new coaches, and having the old players train have led to a national championship-or-bust season.

Ohio State is under a lot of pressure to perform this season. The Buckeyes have lost three straight games to Michigan, which is unacceptable. Everything they've done this offseason is to correct that. Ryan Day has done his best to make sure that he doesn't fall to them again.

Despite all of the roster improvements and the addition of Chip Kelly and some other coaches, the Ohio State Buckeyes still have one major question as we head into the season. Can their head coach actually win when his back is against the wall as it is right now?

Ryan Day is the major question mark on this Ohio State football team

The Ohio State football team is only worried about the game on Saturday, but fans should be worried about the games later in the year. Oregon, Penn State, and Michigan are the three big games this season. Ohio State can only afford to lose two of those and Day can't afford to lose one of them.

If Day loses to Michigan again, the only way for him to save his job would be to win the national championship. Short of that, Ross Bjork will be finding a new coach to bring into Columbus. Day knows this but he can't fast forward the calendar three months.

What makes me think that this team is different is that Day's fingerprints aren't on it as much. Chip Kelly is calling the plays and will be running the offense. Jim Knowles runs the defense. There are fewer things for Day to screw up. That might be the best thing for him.

Just sayin': Interesting comment; however, Day is still responsible for what the assistants do too. In addition, I seriously doubt that we will lose to scUM this year.

A LOVE STORY FOR THE AGES. Last weekend, Nicole Shearin of 10TV interviewed Ryan Day’s wife, Nina, to learn what life looks like being married to an Ohio State head coach. While Nina said, “It’s a lot,” she wouldn’t trade it for the world. That’s because from T-ball to elementary school, middle school, high school and college, Nina knew she and Ryan were meant to be.

Gene Smith effusive in praise of Ryan Day in performance review: Here's what he said

Former Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith gushed about football coach Ryan Day in a written evaluation this past spring, according to a copy of the 2023-24 performance review obtained by The Dispatch through a public records request on Thursday.

He signed the evaluation of Day on May 11, a month and a half before his retirement took effect with the end of the academic year.

“It has been my greatest blessing to work with Ryan,” Smith wrote. “I will miss many people but none more than Ryan.”

Smith first promoted Day, previously the Buckeyes’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, to succeed Urban Meyer in 2019 and watched him amass a 53-8 overall record in his first five seasons at the helm of the program.

But his comments in the year-end manager review offered lofty praise for Day’s performance in several phases.

“He continues to be exceptional with personnel management, recruiting character and talent (academic and athletic), putting the players in position to be successful off the field and on it, and contributing greatly to the overall culture of the department,” Smith wrote.

“Ryan’s growth as a leader has been such a joy to witness and be a small part of. He is passionate, caring, and driven to be successful. He operates with empathy, care, compassion, and strength. The players gravitate to him because they know he cares.”

Smith also commended Day for his involvement in the Columbus area. He was recognized in June for a $1 million donation he and his wife, Nina, made to support mental health research and services at Ohio State.

“He continues to do an amazing job being present in the community,” Smith wrote. “The events, or programs he is or has been involved in are numerous and his presence is felt. He exceeds expectations in many areas.”

Ryan Day

  • On what Chip Kelly's brought to the offense: "Anyone who's called a game will tell you that they can get themselves organized up in the box. ... You can't do that when you're on the sideline. He enjoys being up there, being organized. ... It also gives you a really good vantage point of what's going on in the series."
  • On the new schemes Kelly has brought to the table: "We ran some speed option the other night, that's something we really haven't done a lot of. ... He's had a lot of impact on the run game."
  • Day said that off-field activities during the bye week is about "time management." "We're calling it an improvement week because we have to continue to improve. ... We're gonna work hard to go out there and practice and work on our fundamentals. ... That's the number one thing this week, we've got to stay in rhythm."
  • Day liked the effort and intensity from his players on Saturday. "Guys played with emotion, guys played with passion. That's a good start. That's a good sign. We're nowhere near where we need to be."
  • Recruiting the right types of people is the key to program culture in the modern day, Day said.
  • On the offensive line: "I think it was cleaner. ... There was effort, there was good plays. There was one play where Josh Fryar is running 50 yards down the field. There was a couple plays where Tegra Tshabola was finishing guys into the ground. ... It's just a start. Bigger challenges ahead, but there is encouragement out of that group."
  • On where the term "improvement" week originated and how the team responded to it: "When you look at it, you don't usually have two bye weeks. ... These guys are hungry, they don't want to rest right now. They've got a lot of momentum coming out of this game. ... We'll get the guys that are the 1s and 2s and the older guys some reps, but it's important too (that the depth does)."
  • Day said he did get some clarification on the targeting call against Denzel Burke against the Broncos. "There was a couple different opinions of that after the game, and I guess that's all I can really say."
  • On Kyle McCord's performance at Syracuse: "He's off to a great start. I've only seen a few highlights and it looks like he's doing a great job. ... Happy to see him doing well."
  • While Day wants to retain his players as much as possible, he enjoys seeing his quarterbacks do well other places. "Even if you want to leave, it's still time well-spent and invested. You want to see guys go on and do well."
  • On what he's seen from Will Howard: "He's got a poise out there. He's got a command out there that you can feel. ... He's able to take the practice and the meeting to the game. ... As time goes on, you'll start to see the ball come out of his hand with even more and more rhythm and more pace."
  • "We think that Jayden Ballard had a really good offseason. He was recognized as a gold individual during the offseason. ... The number one thing is taking care of the football, so that has to happen. So we believe in who Jayden is, but we have to take care of the football. So we'll evaluate that this week."
  • On Seth McLaughlin: "He's been a pro. Calms everything down inside. ... He just has a calming presence. That's a good feeling as a coach. ... I do think having that tablet on the sideline is very helpful. ... I think it's really helpful in terms of our coaching. ... He gives us great information and he can help us with that, in terms of seeing something in the game."
  • Day said that anyone who is playing starting-caliber should continue rolling into games, even close ones. "I think we had over 80 guys play in this game. Good for team morale. ... I think Larry wants to roll guys at defensive end, he wants to roll guys at defensive tackle. ... I think that's up to each position coach."
  • On whether the team has considered playing C.J. Hicks along the line of scrimmage: "We have. But we need C.J. right now to play at linebacker. ... We need to find a consistency there that we believe that he can do at linebacker. ... He has to improve. He's gotta continue to grow. We've seen him do it, we know he can do it, but the consistency's just gotta improve."
  • On what impressed him the most about his defense: "To me it's the energy. It's guys flying around, it's guys knocking back the line of scrimmage. ... They pretty much dominated like we thought they could."
  • On what he said to Denzel Burke after the targeting ejection: "I didn't give him much coaching points at the moment. I gave him a hug and told him he gave all the effort he could. ... Then I told him I'd go to bat for him, and I did."
  • Day raved about Ty Hamilton's commitment to the program and what he's provided to the defense at nose guard. "If he can continue to play and take off from where he was Saturday night, he can be an All-Conference player."

Kudos to Oregon, but a couple questionable decisions. How do you end the game with a timeout? Man, if he called it after the PI penalty, we could have had enough time to attempt a field goal. And why not go for two on either of the last couple touchdowns? Even with the last drive ending the way it did, then you’re headed for overtime. Uggh

Already pretty much felt this way, but tonight was the real confirmation for me - Ryan Day is not a championship coach. He just isn't.

If you're okay with 11-2, recruiting really, really well and beating the teams you should every year, but not winning the games that make the difference leaving you without much to show for it come January, he's your guy. And honestly, that's better than 98% of programs out there. Don't think we'll see many seasons that tOSU isn't in the NC discussion under him. He just doesn't have the chops to win it. At this point, we're in year 6 and his record speaks for itself.

Oregon in the regular season under expanded CFP is not a game that “makes the difference”.
