HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

He crumbles in the biggest moments of the biggest games. It keeps happening and he doesn't seem to be learning or applying the lessons correctly.

Just the end of this game alone:

-Didn't call timeouts before the 2 minute warning, literally just throwing away time
-Never runs the ball after getting to the 28 yard line with 40+ seconds left and a timeout
-Didn't know the clock would continue running after a penalty
-Didn't call a timeout to stop the clock from running after the penalty
-Decided to run another play with 6 seconds left instead of attempting a 55 yard FG
-Ended the game with a timeout in his pocket

I mean, holy fucking shit. This is pretty basic level stuff and he fucked up on every single one of these decisions.

I want to remain optimistic but this is year 6 and this shit is still happening. At this point, my faith in Day is now directly tied to how this team performs the rest of this season. If he doesn't win out from here (and make a deep playoff run) and/or win the National Championship, he's dead to me.

If you think a 55 yard FG attempt was a better play call I don't know what to tell you.

Unsolicited outside opinion here:

Day may not be a championship coach, but how many truly are?

His record against top 5 teams is not good 1-7/1-8 whatever it is, but most coaches not named Saban have poor records against top 5 opponents.

If you decide to move on from Day I guarantee that many programs would hire him in a heartbeat. And not programs like wake forest or Virginia but programs h that have won nationals titles in the past 20-25 years.

Of course they would…hell people kept hiring Jimbo Fisher…doesn’t mean they were right to do so. I think Day may be a guy who can take a midcard team and put them in the conversation…I am just not seeing him being a make the most out of elite resources and inherent advantages type of guy.

You are likely 100% right

I am not saying he is, but the question is who is?

Kirby? You think you can poach Kirby from UGA?

Truth be told is Kirby even in top form now that he got his alma mater over the hump? UGA has looked very human since Bennett and Monken, and especially now that Bowers and Ladd, left.

I think the short answer is…no one knows for sure. We are in the middle of a great tectonic shift in how college football works, and what someone needs to be good at to navigate it, so until that plays out some, we won’t know. Whether it’s a guy like Campbell who was the darling for every job then left for dead in the wilderness and now has Iowa State back in the top 10, or the Ostarine Messiah who looked like he would dominate for 15 years and now is totally irrelevant, the only thing that’s clear is that the blueprint is unclear. That speaks to not moving on from Day, but also that he may be lacking in something that wouldn’t have been critical even 5 years ago.

It's about efficiency.

What's more efficient - trying a desperation 55 yard FG or trying to get to the more makeable FG?
The difference 4 yards makes is negligible at best. And given there was only 6 seconds left, it was flat out the wrong decision to make in that situation. I'm honestly stunned to see anyone disagreeing with this. If there was still 10 seconds left on the clock, sure. But 6 seconds is just not enough time to get any significant yardage.

One thing about Kirby - he lost every big game too, for years...until he didn't.

Here’s a thing if you guys decide to move on from ryan day, you will have to absolutely nail the replacement hire.

There are only three coaches right now who have one national titles still actively coaching in college football: a washed up Mac brown, Kirby and Dabo.

I don’t see any way that Dabo would leave Clemson, especially for Ohio State given the history, and I don’t think you guys would want him anyway.

I really don’t see Kirby ever leaving Georgia unless it’s because some sort of scandal or violations that finally catch up to him which would not make him viable.

So basically, you have a lot of really good coaches who have their warts just like ryan day.

This issue is however, right now your AD Ross Bjork. Truth be told he has a questionable history of nailing hires and doing the right thing. Just based on his reputation. Maybe that reputation is not accurate. I don’t know firsthand I just know from interacting with fans from the programs that he had previously worked for. So moving on, you have to really have faith that Björk will get it right.
