HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

He crumbles in the biggest moments of the biggest games. It keeps happening and he doesn't seem to be learning or applying the lessons correctly.

Just the end of this game alone:

-Didn't call timeouts before the 2 minute warning, literally just throwing away time
-Never runs the ball after getting to the 28 yard line with 40+ seconds left and a timeout
-Didn't know the clock would continue running after a penalty
-Didn't call a timeout to stop the clock from running after the penalty
-Decided to run another play with 6 seconds left instead of attempting a 55 yard FG
-Ended the game with a timeout in his pocket

I mean, holy fucking shit. This is pretty basic level stuff and he fucked up on every single one of these decisions.

I want to remain optimistic but this is year 6 and this shit is still happening. At this point, my faith in Day is now directly tied to how this team performs the rest of this season. If he doesn't win out from here (and make a deep playoff run) and/or win the National Championship, he's dead to me.
I agree with everything here except trying a 55 yard FG, Fielding can't hit from that distance so you might as well just throw a Hail Mary really. But all of the other points you brought up led to that scenario and were absolutely fucking mind numbing. I highlighted your second point - he had to rely on the pass to get that spot in the field, but then you run the ball, spike it, and have a very easy kick.

At that stage of the game, take what it does to just simply win and get out, not go for the jugular airing it out with a QB that was up and down all night. Run it with either Trey and Quin, and even if you get no yards you still have a great shot at game-winning FG. Ryan Day outthinking himself despite the absurd amount of resources he has is a recurring theme that I am pretty much done with unless he wins out and makes a run at the Natty. It is a fair point to say "well who would be better", but Day is just not cutting it in games that matter.

Howard threw for over 300 yards with 2 TD and no interceptions, and he got the ball into JJ and Egbuka's hands regularly (combined for just under 200 yds with 2TD). His QB rating last night was higher than Gabriel's. I can see Trey, but Quin had a horrible game last night and averaged 1.9 yards a carry. I love the kid so far this year, but last night Oregon had his number, and he wasn't the solution to anything.

If Howard throws the out it's a 47-49 yarder instead. Much more makeable.
If the DBs know that there is only 6 seconds left then they can play very tight knowing that the ball has to be thrown almost when Will Howard get the ball from the center. I don't think that throw would have worked. Best plan would have been to call the timeout and scheme up a hail mary type of play if you don't think your kicker can make the field goal. There were no good options with 6 seconds left.

For those saying this game doesn't matter: if we bond together, this could be what flips the switch and leads to a run for a title. If we fall apart, we drop one of our next games and all the sudden you aren't a shoe-in with 2 big ten losses despite the best roster according to Urban and Tressel. I think the game most definitely matters. Time will tell.

For those naming replacements, here is who you make offers to in order: Saban. Cignetti. Vrabel. Offer Nick $20m and let him say no. Then work down the list.

Day is 10-8 vs top 10.

Tressel was 12-8, Urban was 20-8. They were also national champions by year 3 and went 16-1 against UM too.

Personally, I've seen enough to now be in the camp of "I'll believe it when I see it" - disappointed in the defense and the same exact crap - we play not to lose and we should be the fucking cat. Ryan wanted to keep it close and steal the W... Almost did. Maybe next time attack, attack, and attack. Empty all your chambers.

No excuse for not knowing the rules - I am sorry - that's fucking nuts. We can agree to disagree on everything else but no fucking excuse to not know the rules. I don't see how we can win it all without luck, and losing the left tackle is fucking horrendous for our title shots, too. The weaknesses are going to stack up.

The only name from the list I would truly chase is Saban, I don't dislike Coach Day I think he can lead us to glory but structural changes need to be done in the program, you can't be 1-7 against top 5 teams specially when you are a top 5 team as well. Get another DC, analyse if it's worth it to continue with LJ and Frye and most importantly is it time for Marotti to go ? Also like you've said he needs to stop playing not to lose in these big games the Clemson game we lost was the opposite of that since then we've turtled a bit in some critical moments.

Saban retired because he didn't like they was college football has evolved with the NIL and plyers demanding more money or they will leave. Has that changed? No. So he won't be coming back to coaching. All reports is that Vrabel has no desire to coach at the college level. You have to like what you are seeing out of Cignetti so that would be possible if Day can't beat Michigan this year.

I say LJ goes at the end of the season. Should’ve been gone end of last season. Knowles gets 1 more year to implement his system without LJ in the way.

Frye, not sure. Line looks better this season, which may be Chip’s influence. 26 recruiting looking good early.

Here’s a thing if you guys decide to move on from ryan day, you will have to absolutely nail the replacement hire.

There are only three coaches right now who have one national titles still actively coaching in college football: a washed up Mac brown, Kirby and Dabo.

I don’t see any way that Dabo would leave Clemson, especially for Ohio State given the history, and I don’t think you guys would want him anyway.

I really don’t see Kirby ever leaving Georgia unless it’s because some sort of scandal or violations that finally catch up to him which would not make him viable.

So basically, you have a lot of really good coaches who have their warts just like ryan day.

This issue is however, right now your AD Ross Bjork. Truth be told he has a questionable history of nailing hires and doing the right thing. Just based on his reputation. Maybe that reputation is not accurate. I don’t know firsthand I just know from interacting with fans from the programs that he had previously worked for. So moving on, you have to really have faith that Björk will get it right.

It's not about finding a guy who already has won a National Championship. Or even a guy who has a team that is in the running for the playoff every year.

It's about identifying a guy who's done more with less somewhere else and can use all of the advantages Ohio State has to offer. Do better than waxing the Northwesterns and Iowas of the world and then shitting his pants whenever he meets competition that's equal or close to our level.

Ohio State's program is one of the premiere programs in the country. Our roster is loaded with talent. Our HC is given blank checks to hire coordinators. Hell, our head coach is given blank checks to hire another P5 team's Head Coaches as coordinators. We are given $20,000,000 in NIL funds just to get over the hump of beating Top 5 teams.

There are coaches out there who can take advantage of all Ohio State offers and do more than 2 conference titles and two bowl game wins in 6 years.

I know you're simply responding to my post and the points I brought up. But it occurred to me that the real issue to be discussed is the defense letting us down. Oregon scored more on us than freaking Idaho allowed.

My only issue with Howard is that in clutch moments at the end, he was falling down, not in the with time management, and missing key reads. He was put in a tough position no doubt and I blame play calling way more, but a champion caliber player finds a way to win.

But this thread is Ryan Day, so I'll circle back to that. Howard got us to the point where it made decisions simple. Day overthought those decisions and he fucked his now narrowed down job up. I'm the guy's biggest fan, but I've had enough unless he really delivers the rest of the year.

To be clear, that means no more losses, a conference title and a title run. With this roster and the standard at Ohio State, nothing else is acceptable.

I want to see some flaming hot questions from the press. I want to see how he responds.

“Coach, you are now 1-7 against top 5 teams. If you were the AD would you fire a coach like that?”

“Coach, please explain how you finish the game with an unused time out left. That seems like awful game management which is your responsibility, correct?”

“Coach, with such a stacked roster how do you explain comments like ‘we hope to be close in the 4th quarter’ when you would never hear Saban, Meyer or even Kirby talk like that? Do you think the teams soft mentality may be from that soft attitude of yours?”

I want flames.

This is way easier said than done.

Some people who overachieve at places do so due to having less pressure.

There are countless stories of someone doing well at a mid-major or lower P5 who didn't work out at a higher profile job.

At the end of the day, if the person you replace Day with doesn't win a title, it's a bust of a hire.

Cignetti is 5-0 and looks sharp but so far that's been a really weak SOS he's faced. Yes, he's kicked their asses, which is promising, but you might want to see how he does the next 5 games before putting him in a top 3 list to replace a coach who loses 2 games a year max.
