Take the QB situation, and I'm not putting anything on Kyle here, but it may have come down to Day thinking "If I open the QB competition, Kyle might leave, but if I don't, everyone else might". It's a tough spot to be in, and I would understand why Kyle would feel the way he might feel in that situation, but Day has to play the longer game, which in this day and age, is a moving target to say the least.

I think maybe that's the real problem. To be the very best and compete for it every single year, you open up the competition for every position and play the best first but get others experience when possible. Always be competing

We've had six coaches since 1951. Post Woody two were fired for on-field results after getting 9 and 13 years respectively. One was fired for cheating after 10 years. The other got mad and said his brain was broke after being suspended for a couple games in his 7th year. We're amazingly patient. Compare the above to places like USC, Texas, Bama (pre-Saban), Florida, aggy, Tennessee, and I could name a dozen more.

I don't mean we run through a lot of coaches; I mean the expectations are so high here that despite all their success, they never get to leave on their own terms

Day is laying out his moves.

He’s clearly taking a different approach. Seems like he knows the stakes and is going all in.

Can he fix his shortcomings (less likely) and make necessary roster moves (more likely)? Is one out of two enough?

It would mean he is at least trying his hand at chess. He knows his ass is on the line and this is his last shot. Haters gonna hate but this story line is going to play HUGE going into the 12 team playoffs. I’m sure Gus is working his lines now.

Everything in the sport is about to change.

Day is positioning himself.

Will see.

OSU will age you very quickly, especially if you lose to the team up north.

Day is a good dude. His family is very nice as well. I have had some encounters with them throughout the years and they’ve always been very kind. He’s in a tough spot right now. How he handles the next year or so will ultimately define his legacy at OSU. Woody was on the ropes until Hop Cassady came along. Will Day find his Cassady?

I actually feel bad for him in some ways. People will counter with how much money he makes but that’s a bullshit argument, because we all know that regardless of the job, people still want to be treated with respect. In the end, he’s human and has cut his teeth with his first head coach experience at OSU. The pressure is tremendous. Id wager that there arent many on this board who have made that kind of career jump. I sure as hell haven’t. I compare his situation to Kirby Smart. It took Smart some time to figure it out as well. We just need to be patient here and I think Day will deliver.

My fear is that the fanbase drives an administrative overreaction and we become Michigan 2007- 2021, or Texas post Mack Brown-2023. Be careful what you wish for.

Or you can become Ohio State 1988-2000 and keep waiting for a grown man (who is very nice) to change his fundamental behavior (tightening up badly under pressure) when a basic knowledge of human behavior tells you that the odds of such hoped for turn around are very low.

The Kirby Smart narrative has 1 year left by the way. Kirby won his first of back to back NC's starting in his sixth year.

Day might actually get lucky here because most people just want to see him win The Game and tsun is headed for an NCAA gutting. It will take a lot longer for people to want him gone for the CFP losing I would think. Maybe not. He's burned a lot of goodwill.

I feel the opposite. Looks like Days balls have now fully dropped, and he is realizing he can't be know as the "nice guy" and win at the highest level in a contact sport like football. You have to give your team an edge by being a bit rough imo.

Things he still has to deal with ( I believe he will btw )

Obviously Special Teams.

To many injury in the recent years. Maybe get a new strength and conditioning coach.

Why can't the Defense lineman get consistent pressure with just a 4 man rush. If LJ has to go, then he has to go. The line hasn't played great since Chase Young.

Also, with your new qb, he has to be able to fire up the troops. If that's sending him to leadership conferences or just recruiting alphas I am not sure. If your qb speeches are " let's not mess up " that's not going to cut it. " take no prisoners, kill them all " is how football is won at the highest level.

I'm beginning to really consider for the first time that this job is too big for Day. I think he may be the Kyle McCord of coaches. It hurts my soul to give harbugger any credit for anything, but I think there may be some truth to the born on 3rd base comment.

Disagree. Outside of giving play calling fully to the OC, he’s been shown to be willing to make changes when needed. Still recruiting at a high level, very few off field incidents with the team, high winning percentage and players are getting drafted at a high rate. The born on third base comment was no where near accurate when given what he’s been able to maintain. Sure he’s lost to TCUN but you throw in that they cheated for 2 years and ran scared a third, his performance is fairly solid outside of that.

I don't disagree with any of that, but I still think we're starting to see the job wear on him. Yesterday worked out, but just as easily could've gone the other way and what I saw from him concerned me. I hope I'm wrong.
