HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

This level of attrition seemed to work at Bama...
Hurts.. but maybe it's the sign of the times...
Players need to propel themselves and show out
or the coaches recruit over you

'The Crimson Tide had a total of 17 players enter the transfer portal from the 2021 team'
'Alabama football lost 18 players to the transfer portal ahead of the 2023 season'
'Georgia saw 16 players exit via the transfer portal last offseason'

I'm personally less worried about people leaving who might not want to compete for jobs, than I am guys who never got a chance to. Take the QB situation, and I'm not putting anything on Kyle here, but it may have come down to Day thinking "If I open the QB competition, Kyle might leave, but if I don't, everyone else might". It's a tough spot to be in, and I would understand why Kyle would feel the way he might feel in that situation, but Day has to play the longer game, which in this day and age, is a moving target to say the least.

The transfer portal has turned college football into a more cut throat business than the drug trade. Some feeling are gonna be hurt.

The bottom line is still very real world; if you produce, the options are in your favor. If you don't produce the world has the better options.

It's better to produce.

I mean, yes. But in his defense I think 3,170 yards passing and a 24/6 ratio with an 11-1 record behind a suspect offensive line is producing in most circles...he just happens to play at an elite place where the coach is feeling the heat for not winning the last game of the year 3 times in a row.

Since we are explaining the unexplainable, I will air my biggest concern with an intangible…it seems like Ohio State coaches and players are always waiting for the perfect playcall.
This topic was touched on in the Kyle McCord thread, and whether his second interception in the tCun game was somehow justified because he didn't have a "clean pocket" to throw from. Here's my primary criticism of Ryan Day: He runs a precision offense that requires a clean pocket, and when the pocket breaks down his quarterbacks lack the crisis management skills to deal with the situation. Day produces quarterbacks who over-think and under-react. That is why we have seen late delivery (Fields) and refusal to scramble (Stroud) and rushing through reads (McCord) over the past five years.
Also, it destroys my brain to think about why Ohio State’s offense doesn’t incorporate more motions and misdirections.
Day is so into precision that he neglects deception. This will continue to hamper his ability to create a fully-integrated offense, IMHO.

That's why when Day had Lincoln run a Boot with an RPO I almost cried with anticipation. It just puts so much pressure on a defense when your QB can move.

Agreed 100 percent. He calls games like he's trying to not make mistakes and his players follow up on that attitude. This team rarely looked like they were playing loose or having fun.

I think it's going to favor Ohio State when it all settles in. I think the coaching staff can set it up as a second wave of recruits to show they deserve a spot at Ohio State. Like they can funnel guys to MAC schools or non power 5 schools and tell them to show out then enter the portal. There are a bunch of Ohio kids who dream to play for the Buckeyes and I think they end up at lesser Big 10 school or Cincinnati. Now they can play their way to Ohio State and not have to sit out a year. The appeal of starting out somewhere else to prove you are worthy of a Ohio State scholarship could be a real possibility instead of just showing Ohio State that they were wrong on you by going to Purdue, IU, Michigan St, etc.

I think it will just take one good story of a player transferring up from a MAC school to create that pipeline. The guy who worked his ass off at Toledo, Akron, Miami of Ohio, etc to now start on the Buckeyes and have him talk about how he dream to be a Buckeye.

It's still going to have a hard time convincing someone to take an offer from Toledo or Miami if Ohio if they have Purdue Illinois Rutgers offer. Especially if it reaches Sparty, Wisconsin UCLA levels

That's true but I think once a couple guys do it, it becomes a realistic path. Some of it is selling the idea that immediate playing time in the MAC, etc can help them develop vs sitting behind and waiting their turn at a power 5 conference.

Really it doesn't needs to be a big pipeline. Power 5 teams are just going to be picking off players from each other. If you can get a couple good players a year that can come in from lesser schools to compete at positions of needs, on top of just replacing the losses from the portal from other power 5 teams. I think that ends up as a net positive.

You would think that he loves "deception" the way he trots out the special teams on a crucial 4th down .....

yeah, this is the way but it's startling as fuck when it starts happening to Ohio State.
