HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

Yeah, he brought in Tim Beck, Greg Schiano, Alex Grinch, Bill Davis and Ed Wariner(OL coach great, OC BAD). Not sure how any of these were positives, and they all collectively cost this program a minimum of 2 NCs: 2015 and 2018 definitely, and 2017 possibly.
Urban began stagnant and stubborn after the NC, and began hiring his buddies instead of the best, most qualified hires. And even when they failed, he doubled down and kept them on the staff and even promoted some. Day has shown to be the exact opposite. He will can a guy in a year, to bring in a better option. But he’s so predictable in his playcalling at times, and tends to be predictable at bad times. I thought he had a similar offensive mind to Herman at one time, but it seems like he’s wound too tight and isn’t the best at delegating. A lot of pressure at a place like OSU, but the 1st 3 games should’ve been a perfect time to let Hartline run the offense, IMO

I will say that Warinner and Schiano were Urban's buddies. Beck was Warinner's friends which is why he was kept around the second year.

I agree with your statements about Day. I do think if he brought in someone that was a good offensive mind, it would challenge his thinking. He basically just stayed with Wilson then promoted Hartline from within when Wilson left.

I guess the honeymoon is long gone. Whatever da man does is not good.

I’d be curious to see how the team handles ND.

New rules need qb need line new really disgruntled fans who believe they know better, I don’t really envy Day now.

1. He's extremely well compensated for dealing with a rabid fan base.
2. He can solve all these issues by winning one game after Thanksgiving.

Also Urban was all about evolving the offense and defense. He would bring in coordinators with a different style on both sides of the ball and see if they could mesh with what was existing there. New things were always being added or modified every season to keep teams guessing. It didn't always work but he seem to have the ability to fall back on a previous working model.

It just feels like at least on offense, Days offense is what the offense will be. I see very little to evolve it or to be creative. He needs a coordinator to come in and push the thinking with this offense. Im not saying it's broken but it's stale and that makes it predictable because of the years of tape of Day doing the same stuff.
Seeing much more 12 personnel than any years past.

Urban understood the assignment. Everybody acts like Day deserves a lifetime contract for beating Dabo. Losses to scUM no NC. He is close to become the Emperor in the fable the Emperor’s new clothes.

I agree with that. He also has the security of knowing he works at a university where the current administration is not going to pull the trigger unless he brings scandal to it. Fuck the fanbase; they don't mean shit. He needs to settle down and fix shit before South Bend.

It's a double edged sword.... promoting from within is great but it can be trying to make sure no one challenges you. I was happy that Hardline got promoted but disappointed when Day said he'd still be calling the plays...

this is year 5
  • Defensive (and defense) hires post Hafley/Matthison had been.... not good.
  • Offensive hires for the most part (I don't count Hartline) have been ...
    • Yurcich only here for a season really bad recruiter but he's been doing a pretty decent job at PSU.....
    • Corey Denis, but everyone still knows Day coaches QBs
    • Keenan Bailey (first year so we'll see how the TEs hold up)....
  • Parker Fleming .... my favorite piñata ....what would you say you do here ?

edit: adding this part in addition.
There is something rotten in the WHAC. There's a lot of folks long in the tooth in there that maybe should hang it up after the season. I also include Marotti in this....Guys are noticeably slower, more bulk less flexible, nagging injures linger for entire seasons and by god our lines get the shit kicked outta them by almost everyone....

The Hartline promotion HAD to happen. OSU can’t lose that man and what he’s doing with the WR room. The best unit arguably in CFB. And he’s the best recruiter in CFB.

Jury is still out on the hires of Frye, Knowles, Walton and Eliano. Day also can be credited with bringing Laurinitis back, and he’ll be an official coach soon. The defense has been much better with Knowles, but I know eyes will roll because of the scUM and UGA games. But they have shut down the 1st 2 teams, like they should. But ND will be the true test. Nothing we saymatters until we see what they can do against ND.

It sounds like the exact opposite. I get he hasn't met goals, but he's gotten OSU in the playoffs 3 times, gets 11 wins, and people act like he's downgrading the program. He's not there yet but I also don't think he's far away. People are acting like he gives the team no chance to win.

Don't disagree on Hartline, he is to be protected at all cost...

There’s a lot of revisionist history when it comes to Urban…
Urban had the luxury of playing some of the worst scUM teams in program history. He got to feast on Brady cHoke, and when he left the program bare. He got to stuff Hairball in a locker. And then he left before Hairball put the team together fully in his image like he has now. Heck, Tressel even played some very tough Carr teams, but Urban hardly had many scUM teams with even close to the talent he had at OSU. Just calling a spade a spade.
Now does Day still need to beat scUM. Hell yes! Regardless of the talent level, he needs to beat scUM this year and get the monkey off his back. The team is too talented to lose again
