HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

What gives people this unshakeable belief in Day?

His HC resume? He doesn’t have one.

Urban’s seal of approval? It’s not like his judgement of assistant coaches is an unbroken record of success.

The track record of coaches who didn’t win a NC in their first four years at a school?

Im curious what it is besides just hope.

recruiting for the most part. but wouldn’t say my belief is “unshakeable”.

He got us to the playoffs and kicked Clemson's ass in a revenge game. That's why I thought with a year he would do the same to TSUN.

Maybe he needs that extra month of gameplanning maybe he was holding the offense together with bubblegum and duct tape from all the injuries.

I don't think he has a TSUN mental block Cooper does. I think he beats the brakes off of them in 2020 if we play while Cooper could have lost that game.

Does it mean he's infallible no. But the dude is 34-4 and something like 23-2 in the B1G

I don't think that we are in the Cooper years again. Day will learn.
The problem is it's all mental at this point. Schematically the Buckeyes should've been up by 3 TDs at half but some crucial mental mistakes kept SCUM in it. Right now it reminds me a little of what Kirby went through when he just couldn't beat Alabama. Would always play well enough to have a double digit lead but brutal mental mistakes would cost them.

Day needs to hire a goddamn sports psychologist or something.

Losing is a disease...

This was a significant theme in the Cooper years. I look at it as a trade off. If you want to run an NFL factory, you will occasionally get burned having your future NFL guy play as a freshman against the 5th year grizzled vet.

The other theme we are going to hear a lot is the right mix of Ohio/midwestern kids who "get it" vs the highly rated West Coast kid thing.

I'm not saying either is right or wrong, just noting that it's a Cooper era dilemma come back to life.
Do we have a ton of West Coast kids?

I can of 3 or 4 off of the top of my head.

Fair point though.

I think Day at halftime was still coaching for December not Saturday. Turtle up and win. At that time scUM wasn’t running the ball and I think Day thought it was flukes we weren’t up 17. He continued disrespecting scUm until later and the panicked look was telling.

It's more that we have a national recruiting approach than an Ohio centric approach I think. I personally never really bought into that one, I want the best player but like most things there is a delicate balance that must be achieved.

Well that is a mood killer and I agree with you.

TTUN just picked up a 4 star kid from Youngstown Chaney, that I am not sure OSU even offered. Chaney was actually pretty solid this year, so he may have been a diamond in the rough.

I think OSU should at least offer Ohio kids then back off like Meyer used to.

I guess the question is who is out there of a caliber big enough to trust OSU with? I think OSU isn't going to give Day much more rope, which is bad for him, because as far as the QB and Oline is concerned, it is kind of a rebuild year.

Read from someone else on here that OH is weak in O’linemen this year and not to let the star ranking fool you.

I mean…this could be blasphemy but do Ohio kids get the Michigan hate still? Bucks are coming off 15 out of 16 wins in the formative years for most kids that are on campus or will be on campus (2004-2019). Most of them versus very down Michigan teams. Trying to think of 16-20 year olds. Different world.

Unfortunately the human nature side of things kicked in and this was taken for granted. Michigan was just another laughingstock at the end of the year. They don’t know the pain.

I’m not ever ever the one to wish the Rivalry was “more competitive”…15-1 still wasn’t good enough for me. But the perception of who/what Michigan is to Ohio State clearly got imbalanced. It may take 2 painful years of correction to right the ship.

Just thinking out loud. My problem remains it should have only taken 1 year to correct it. This version of The Game - at home with a supposedly “all-world offense” and plenty of chances, should have found a way to win, maybe even by 2+ scores. Instead the opposite happened.

I’ll add.. even if it isn’t an altruistic hate of Michigan, at minimum the roster should at least be filled with guys that want to win conference and National titles. That alone means you need to be willing to die for this game. Or nothing else matters.

This thought crossed my mind Saturday, but I dismissed it. Nobody on Ohio State's roster would have seen this as a rivalry unless they are football historians. They were in diapers when Tress was leaving.

Part of that stings now, especially after seeing Ohio's top OL in 2024 commit to Michigan in Luke Hamilton. Kid wanted to be a Buckeye, didn't get his offer yet, saw the result on Saturday and committed to ttun. Pain....pain.
He didn't get the offer. There may be more to the story. As somebody said earlier, he was probably going to be a summer camp offer if their targets fell through.

If he was that good they would probably have offered him.

I can understand not offering some of the lower star players in Ohio, but if it's an Olineman in Ohio, OSU better offer. As far as OL development is concerned, TTUN is doing a stellar job. So they should do the Woody thing there and just offer.
