HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

That was exactly my point. We have 20 year old super stars, where they have 23 year old grown ass men. There is a physical and mental disparity.

That is why they are perfectly happy with 2 and 3 star recruits, mixed in with 4 star misfits from other schools. Edited in: their 4 and 5 stars, Edwards and McCarthy did play a huge role in their success this season.

It's also the reason they will get curb stomped in a playoff system, because eventually they will come across a team that matches up talent wise, in a more complicated scheme. Somebody like most of the top SEC teams. Lol

This was a significant theme in the Cooper years. I look at it as a trade off. If you want to run an NFL factory, you will occasionally get burned having your future NFL guy play as a freshman against the 5th year grizzled vet.

The other theme we are going to hear a lot is the right mix of Ohio/midwestern kids who "get it" vs the highly rated West Coast kid thing.

I'm not saying either is right or wrong, just noting that it's a Cooper era dilemma come back to life.

A modern-day John Cooper’s got a mean, mean stride.

Part of that stings now, especially after seeing Ohio's top OL in 2024 commit to Michigan in Luke Hamilton. Kid wanted to be a Buckeye, didn't get his offer yet, saw the result on Saturday and committed to ttun. Pain....pain.

I don't think that we are in the Cooper years again. Day will learn.

He did make changes after last year, this year he needs to make calculated adjustments to fix what didn't work this year. I'm not so sure he will though, due to part of that being him surrendering play calling duties. If he's truly a great coach he would do that. But I have doubts that it will ever happen. He's clearly not the play calling genius he might think he is though. This will continue to happen year after year as long as he is calling the shots every down.

So would you say things are better now since Day took over? Or worse?

I realize you didn't write this to me, but I've been reflecting on this for a few days. These thoughts are outside of the The Game as I'm not at peace with 1-2 at all. Just spit-balling other shit.

People have talked the last few days about us being a Big XII team. I've been thinking more of a representation of the Ducks with Mariotta and Chip Kelly. That doesn't give me warm and fuzzies.

When Urban stepped away, things weren't exactly trending in ways that I thought were overall well.
So, if I look at departments and such:
  • QB room is solid, just built differently. I'll take Fields 11/10 times all day long. Wish we continued the trend of taking uber athletes that could be developed into a complete QB.
  • OL is mid-lining for me. The talent's there. I think Frye will do well, but needs more time to demonstrate what he'll become.
  • WR room is bad ass and continues the trend
  • RB room has the talent and displays said talent at times. I'm of the mind that the scheme is more at fault than the players here.
  • TE room had been looking great and then just trended otherwise.
  • IDL has me excited with Tyliek and Hall, but the rest just have left me meh. Unfortunately, the rotation schedule was curious and didn't really seem to allow for cohesion as games would go on.
  • DEs still have me happy. Harrison played above my expectations this year and JT is a BAMF. We'll see if the opportunity continues with new members.
  • Linebackers trended upward for me this year. Tommy is a BAMF. Wish the D followed his lead more.
  • CBs were/are a disappointment. I feel like that's been the case since Hafley left.
  • Safeties did alright when the scheme was structured accordingly. I've mentioned elsewhere that I really like Tanner. Hickman and Ransom were solid cats for the most part.
  • Special Teams has stayed about the same due to the kickers and punters being solid.
I guess I see the trendline staying about the same on the mean.

What gives people this unshakeable belief in Day?

His HC resume? He doesn’t have one.

Urban’s seal of approval? It’s not like his judgement of assistant coaches is an unbroken record of success.

The track record of coaches who didn’t win a NC in their first four years at a school?

Im curious what it is besides just hope.

The Kirby Smart comparisons (COULDNT BEAT BAMA AND GET TO THE BIG ONE THE FIRST FEW TIMES AROUND!) are stupid because it's not like UGA was doing that before Smart got there.

Day took over the big dog and has now been relegated to 2nd place in the division.
