HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

For better or worse I feel like he's built more of an NFL culture. I feel that way in a lot of aspects of the program. The easy comparison is how Urban Meyer handled team versus Day.

  1. The way they handle injuries (very protective of players as they should be but in situations where 1 game can cost a season I feel like we see substantially more guys out than we would've under Urban Meyer)
  2. In above regard, I think it's actually a selling point to recruits and families that we are over protective of their health. Again, a good thing, but I feel like the culture takes away from some of the urgency needed within the program on a day to day basis
  3. I think he treats the players in a much different capacity than Urban Meyer who really had that dog in him. While we saw the yearly letdown game, Meyer wasn't stepping off the pedal in regards to the rivalry....7-0 against Michigan is freakish when you stop and really think about it. Something I now recognize I took for granted as we ripped their hearts out yearly.

People rightly said Urban Meyer would not work at the NFL level because it was grown men and his "rah rah" attitude would not work with multi-millionaires making similar money to him.

I sometimes wonder if the same is true in reverse with Day. He isn't nearly the "rah rah" guy Meyer is or have that dog in him to be the hard ass on a consistent basis. I think Day is MUCH more sensitive to his players and certainly takes players mental health and wellness to a different level than Meyer did. Which, again, is a good thing. I definitely think from an NFL perspective, he'd be seen as the proverbial "player's coach".

Lastly, in terms of his offense, it's fun but I get Sean Payton vibes in New Orleans from it. Not that it's the same system, but for years the knock was always that NO better get home field advantage bc their offense wasn't going to work in the playoffs on the road. And that held true more often than not. I love Day's offense when it's clicking, but it's far too finesse to be relied on every week in the Big 10. It is what it is in that regard. We don't have the edge to line up and slam good teams in the face at this point. To me it's a combination of scheme and attitude.

I like Day a lot and think the program is in good hands with him at the helm. We are lucky to have a guy who can recruit at such a high level based on player development. I don't think it'd be as easy to replace him as some think......we are getting top QB prospects year-in/year-out based on his reputation alone. The fallout on the staff should he leave is also a major issue......Hartline loves the guy....would Day take him to the NFL with him? All of a sudden our QB and WR pipeline is up in the air.

Ryan Day got his ass handed to him in the biggest game of the season for the second year in a row. Thoroughly outcoached and outplayed in back to back years. The video Axelrod posted obviously doesn't look great but it means nothing. If he stood there doing it like normal, everyone would be talking about how he just lost a big game and he's doing Carmen Ohio like they just beat Rutgers or something.

I agree with this assessment. Which is great in the expanded playoff, but we better be good with losing the game as just a part of doing business. Which again I think will be done naturally through the expanded playoff.

OK, agree we have seen more injuries, BUT we have a linebacker playing with 2 broken hands and have had running backs playing who clearly aren't 100% fit. We saw JSN try to come in a couple of times with a lingering hamstring injury, which is actually probably worse than that, considering the number of games he missed. So if Day is being overprotective of injured players, he's not doing a good job of that either.

Do you think Day has reached out to Meyer or vice-versa?
Interesting question and something I've thought about as well.

Day mentioned all the time in 2019 and 2020 about how he kept in close contact with Meyer.

Think it's safe to say that changed in 2021 when Meyer took that Jags job.

And of course, that's when things started going downhill for us...

Coincidence? Maybe.
