HB Dontre 'DeSoto' Wilson (Official Thread)

I haven't heard this said yet: What Dontre absolutely WILL do for the offense is give it a better opportunity to change speeds. He brings another gear we didn't have. The ability to grind it with Hyde up the middle will now be complemented by DeSoto's skat ability. That alone will keep defenses on their heels.

Lets be serious under our previous offensive system any of the players listed above would struggle to live up to the hype. The offensive system wasn't based around the players on the team and how many points we could score, it was based upon a strong defense then running it down the other teams throat. Wilson will have every opportunity to succeed because this system is going to use his agility out in space. The speed at which Wilson grasps the system will be the only thing slowing him down.

Bingo.

No, they didn't.

Ginn came out of HS as a CB and had 7 receptions for 112 yards through his first 8 games.

Beanie had an established 1300+ yard rusher in front of him in Antonio Pittman. No one expected him to come in and steal the starting job.

Beanie's first 6 games were: 10-50-1, 5-17-0, 5-18-0, 5-11-0, 14-78-0, 6-9-0.

45 rushes, 183 yards, 1 TD isn't exactly setting the world on fire. He picked it up later in the year, obviously.

I think you're letting later success influence how you remember their early careers at OSU and how much "buzz" (ht DBB) they had during fall camp.
Wait, is anyone thinking DW will do that? I don't.

...well, and those FOUR punt return TDs and national-best punt return average -- which was the part of his game he may have received the most buzz/hype about, considering he had been US Army All-American Game MVP for his huge game and return TD there.

Come to think of it, Beanie was the MVP of the Army game too, and a completely different style of back than Pittman, and had a solid freshman year that probably lived up to the expectations many of us had at the time.

I think Dontre's hype/buzz seems to be right in line with those earlier epic recruits, and at least for my part I hope for a similar impact from him: not as our #1 RB, but as a spark to our return games and hopefully making the most of a handful or two of offensive touches every game, including some big breakaway plays.

"Dontre Wilson, RB/WR, Ohio State, and Christian Hackenberg, QB, Penn State: Normally, we'd never consider putting freshmen on a list like this, because that seems like way too much pressure and hype for unproven players. And yet Manziel just won the Heisman in his first year of collegiate action. Wilson has drawn rave reviews for his speed early on at Buckeyes camp and could be used in a variety of ways, while Hackenberg has a great chance to win the Penn State job out of the gate and lead Bill O'Brien's quarterback-friendly offense."

Yeah, I don't recall any former tOSU frosh making these kinds of lists before even touching the ball in recent memory. At this point, it's getting almost unfair to the kid. Hell, Clarett had to actually play a game before getting Heisman talk.

Even though I love speed I hope Meyer never loses the ability to throw a 220+ pound back through the interior of a defense. What intrigues me about our offense this year is we have a QB who can do both inside/outside and may have the best shake of anyone in the nation, we have 3 backs over 220+ pounds that can expose teams covering the outside and now we have 2-3 legit players that can stress a player wide that aren't Braxton in Hall, Dontre, and Jalin.

We can come at teams in so many different waves if a team cheats and make them pay. We went 12-0 last year with no one to stress a team on the outside now think what we'll do with that type of threat added.

Not to mention we have more speed and weapons outside at WR now and a QB with a better understanding of the passing attack. I still think we don't throw for many yards because teams simply won't be able to stop the running game. Why go away from something that teams can't stop.

Woody? They have coffins with WIFI now? This could be the 100 years war.

Next, we will likely hear Elvis complain that Meyer won't allow NFL scouts to wear blue suede shoes.

Agreed, the running game will be even better this year.

I doubt he will. IMO, One of the biggest lessons he learned after his time at Florida was the importance of a good inside running game that is not almost totally reliant upon the QB. If you establish this in your program, there is a greater chance that you can maintain an offense even after a uniquely talented QB leaves.

Overall though, I agree that it's encouraging seeing different players like Wilson coming in and adding to this offense, making it more dangerous and balanced.

I'm sure he found that out quickly when you go from a 6'2 240lb mobile qb to a much smaller pocket passer. I'm sure urban was quite pleased seeing this RB corps this year as opposed to what he had at UF. Though he didn't have slouched at UF, he had to use guys that could only to get the edges as they were too small to run against the sec's best front d linemen. Nick Saban was able to get the best of him when he was able to bring in the very large DTs and big but equally fast DEs to counter the small scat backs at UF. Being able to batter a defense with Hyde, smith and Dunn, then beat the defense on the edge with hall, Elliot, ball and Wilson helps(it helps even more knowing that the edge guys can also run off tackle when needed as well). Throw in Braxton running when plays break down, or even on options, and you have one of the deadliest run game in the nation.

Ohio State freshman Dontre Wilson scores first TD: 'I'm way faster than a lot of people and I've got to prove that.' (Video)

By Doug Lesmerises, Northeast Ohio Media Group
September 07, 2013

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Dontre Wilson's parents didn't make it up from Texas for his first college game against Buffalo last week. They made it for San Diego State on Saturday, perched by The Blackwell team hotel as the Buckeyes came out in their suits for their walk to the Skull Session.

“Last week, seeing everybody else's parents there kind of made me sad,” Wilson said Saturday. “My parents being there this week gave me a boost of confidence.”

Maybe he was saving his first college touchdown for them.

“Nah,” Wilson said. “I did what I could do today.”
