HB Dontre 'DeSoto' Wilson (Official Thread)

Can anybody recall a frosh with this much hype here in the last 10-15 years, if ever? Ginn had hype, but not on this-level as far as immediate expectations as a playmaker. Beanie had hype, but it was expected that he'd play a secondary role to Pittman initially. Obviously Pryor, but with Boeckman there at the time, it wasn't expected for him to be a major contributor as a frosh. Maybe Clarett...I remember the reports from camp on him being pretty impressive. But, man...the way the coaches and his teammates are building Dontre up...I can't remember seeing anything like it.
In 2011 there were already "I heart Braxton" shirts for the 1st game.

I get what your saying in regards to Pryor, but I have to disagree. When Todd was gone, and the keys to the offense were handed to him, the expectations were absolutely through the roof. Borderline unrealistic.

Boeckman wasn't gone though. He was the incumbent coming off a season where he was named All-B1G and played in a national championship game. The odds that he'd be benched were something like 10,000:1 ().

Jokes aside, the expectations we seem to have for Wilson to be an immediate transformative presence don't quite match up to the way Pryor was being perceived during his fall camp. I think the prevailing attitude with him was "when he gets his turn, he'll be great." That's different from the way people are talking about Wilson right now.

Which game, what quarter does Dontre score his first touchdown?

Game 1, Quarter 2, read option to the house.

I have no idea. I do think he scores withing his first 5-7 touches though. Heck the kid could return the first kick of the year for one.
cc: BB73

Would be a good vBet. Really think he could hit paydirt within 4-5 touches.

I didn't know the details of the McNutt for Heisman campaign getting shut down  what a bunch of jackoffs: http://www.thelantern.com/mobile/2.1345/mcnutt-campaign-ends-1.94823
Interesting quote from that article given contemporary stories...

"You can't commercialize players," said Rick Van Brimmer, director of OSU trademark and licensing services. "He (McNutt) has a right to protect his name."

Lmao! "Interesting" is right, since the NCAA was pretty much forced to stop selling jerseys in its web site this past week.

Screw the NCAA. Bunch of hypocritical a-holes.

Ohio State football: Dontre Wilson?s explosive potential excites
By Tim May
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH TUESDAY AUGUST 13, 2013

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer hasn?t had to spend much time talking about what freshman running back Dontre Wilson could bring to the offense. Players ? even fellow freshmen ? know why Wilson has a chance to play immediately.

?Because of his speed,? freshman cornerback Eli Apple said. ?Coach Meyer loves speed and he?s definitely got that.?

Growing up as a football and track standout in DeSoto, Texas, Wilson didn?t need anyone to define what set him apart. He usually has been the fastest player on the field. So it has been for his first nine days on the practice field at Ohio State, with one possible exception ? all-Big Ten cornerback Bradley Roby.

?Me and him haven?t raced or anything like that yet, but I have been pretty much one of the fastest dudes on each team I?ve played on,? Wilson said.
Asked whether he and Roby have been contemplating a showdown, Wilson laughed and said, ?We haven?t discussed it, but we could here in the near future.?

Race or no race, Wilson already has earned respect with upperclassmen. Linebacker Ryan Shazier believes most freshmen should be seen and not talked about, but he was willing to make an exception in Wilson?s case.
?I feel like he?s going to be a good guy here,? Shazier said. ?He?s doing everything that the coaches want him to do, and he?s following directions.?

Did Ryan actually say that or are those a reporters words?

There is undoubtedly some unrealistic expectations being placed on this kid (and I've been part of that), but once opposing def coodinators see him on tape, he will affect the game just by being on the field - whether he gets the ball or not - because they will have to scheme specifically for him. The speed Wilson has is not hype. It will scare the living daylights out of defenses, and it will open up things for all the other skill players.

He has the potential to have a DeAnthony Thomas-type of impact. Whether he can as a frosh is something to be determined.

I would expect that they would want him to touch the ball 8-10 times a game via punt returns, rushes, and catches. If he can do the little things and if he has enough expolosive plays, they will up his touches as the season goes along. It's gonna be fun to see how he develops and how they use him.

Art Schlichter had even more hype before his freshman year. The next closest were either Spielman who was on the freakin Wheaties Cereal box his High School senior year or maybe Katzenmoyer, maybe.

10.5 in the 100 and 4.33 in the 40....all before playing a down of college ball. Not to mention the fact that he is a hard worker and listening to the coaches. I don't think any of this hype is unwarranted. I can't wait to see him against Buffalo!
