HB Dontre 'DeSoto' Wilson (Official Thread)

They were not...neither did he at Utah or BG.

Would be quite amazing to score 30 every game...that's like 1995 Nebraska good.

Nebraska '95 averaged 52 points per game.
And only allowed 15.
Their closest game was 14 points.

If this team puts up Nebraska '95 numbers we'll be taking about this team being the greatest in Ohio State history.

Can anybody recall a frosh with this much hype here in the last 10-15 years, if ever? Ginn had hype, but not on this-level as far as immediate expectations as a playmaker. Beanie had hype, but it was expected that he'd play a secondary role to Pittman initially. Obviously Pryor, but with Boeckman there at the time, it wasn't expected for him to be a major contributor as a frosh. Maybe Clarett...I remember the reports from camp on him being pretty impressive. But, man...the way the coaches and his teammates are building Dontre up...I can't remember seeing anything like it.

Terrelle Pryor and Maurice Clarett come to mind most recently.

Recently...Ginn, Clarett, and Braxton all come to mind.

Ginn was expected to be a wildly effective playmaker from day 1, Mo C was really hyped up, and Braxton had a lot of expectations in his first appearance.

Dontre has that much hype, and more. If he doesn't return a kick for a TD, break long runs, or otherwise contribute in big ways the fans will be disappointed. Lotta hype/pressure on a freshman.

Count me in the group that thinks he'll be a big difference maker.

I think the Clarett hype would have been like this or bigger if he had arrived during the era of social media and 24/7 college football awareness. I remember being very aware of him, but still taking a wait-and-see approach.

To me the only thing that surpassed this was the hype for Katzenmoyer. I was just a kid at the time without internet or cable tv or any access to Columbus tv, radio or newspapers. Despite all of that, I knew who he was and had very high expectations for him before he ever stepped on the field. I can't imagine what kind of circus it would be if Katzenmoyer had come to campus under today's conditions.

There have been plenty of players who were expected to be good. Very few are expected to dramatically transform the team the way Wilson seems to be.

Clarett and Zwick. Zwick was the best QB prospect to come out of Ohio in years while some columnists in NE Ohio labeled MoC a FB with quick feet like Jerome Bettis. Could throw in D'Andrea too, who was 6'3" 235 as a HS senior. Since all those guys committed so early people around Ohio were talking up this group before they'd even played their senior seasons of high school.

The OSU team (Krenzel in particular) raved about MoC right from the start though. Enrolled early and was a relentless worker.

Yep. Plus Mo went on to be named the national offensive player of the year. Scout had him as a FB for some reason, but I think ESPN had him and Vince Young 1 and 2 that year.

Clarett is definitely the closest I can recall, and if he was here with today's social media and the amount of internet reporting there now is, I can imagine that being similar, maybe more. I remember the reports of his insane work ethic and calling out veterans. Same with Big Kat.

That's about it really, though...to me anyway. With Ginn, there were questions about where he'd end up lining up. Pryor had HUGE hype, but I don't think the expectations were for him to be an immediate contributor outside of a couple of special packages. Same with Braxton. From what we're hearing about Dontre, he's looking like a major contributor from the get-go. That's exceedingly rare.

I get what your saying in regards to Pryor, but I have to disagree. When Todd was gone, and the keys to the offense were handed to him, the expectations were absolutely through the roof. Borderline unrealistic.

Oh yeah, no doubt. I remember the electricity in the Shoe when he trotted onto the field for the first time vs. YSU. But, at this point (fall camp), the expectations were that it was Boeckman's team...which would limit Pryor's impact for the time being.
