Hype keeps building for Dontre Wilson
By Austin Ward | ESPN.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- On the day he signed to Ohio State in the spring, coaches were already fighting over who would get the first chance to work with him in their meeting room.

When he reported to campus in the summer, veteran teammates started raving about his physical skills and the impact he was already having in offseason workouts.

And by the time training camp for the fall finally arrived and Urban Meyer got his hands on him, it took all of three practices for the Buckeyes coach to join the chorus singing the praises of freshman Dontre Wilson and his ability to instantly upgrade an offense that was plenty dangerous without him.

Cont'd ...

There was almost no hype for Boom. Camp offer who most thought could be a solid contributor. The reports make it sound like Dontre will be an all-american this year.
True on Boom, he wasn't expected to contribute right away. Last player to stir up this much hype as a true freshman during fall camp was Clarett.

You must be forgetting about guys like Teddy Ginn and Beanie Wells - both after having great High School seasons, ratings, USA AA games, and then having great camps. They both came in extremely hyped for big time season performances.

Even then, the media/news/twitter makes it totally different today than int he early 2000's.

I agree, the conversation totally changes when you put social media in the equation. Put MC in the same practices with the tweeter-verse churning out updates and you have a much more fair race.

On a side note; I hoping to see in the rumor mill something like "Urban pushes NCAA to lengthen playing field to 150 yards to balance speed issues." but, nothing yet. Nice problem to have though.

One person has mentioned this, but it seems it didn't sink in: There is a difference between expectations borne of high-school highlights and recruiting service rankings (let's call that hype) and expectations borne of performance in summer workouts and fall camp (let's call that buzz).

A fair few Buckeyes have had more hype than Dontre.

The only Buckeyes that I recall generating more buzz were Clarrett and Katzenmoyer.

Wilson probably has better athletes in front of him on the depth chart than either of the other two had, so he is unlikely to start. Expectations based on comparisons of buzz or hype are unfair for that and many other reasons.

Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to the highlight reel he's going to put together...

No, they didn't.

Ginn came out of HS as a CB and had 7 receptions for 112 yards through his first 8 games.

Beanie had an established 1300+ yard rusher in front of him in Antonio Pittman. No one expected him to come in and steal the starting job.

Beanie's first 6 games were: 10-50-1, 5-17-0, 5-18-0, 5-11-0, 14-78-0, 6-9-0.

45 rushes, 183 yards, 1 TD isn't exactly setting the world on fire. He picked it up later in the year, obviously.

I think you're letting later success influence how you remember their early careers at OSU and how much "buzz" (ht DBB) they had during fall camp.

Before Braxton talked up Dontre at B1G media days, he didn't have much hype. Everyone knew we were bringing in a solid group of playmakers, but there wasn't necessarily anything that set Dontre apart from the rest.

At this point, it's buzz as someone said earlier. I think we're all excited to see what he can do, but let's be realistic here: He's not going to play over Jordan Hall, Rod Smith, Hyde, Philly Brown, Devin Smith, and possibly even Evan Spencer. So there's no way he'll have the same impact as Clarett or Pryor.

I agree 100%. I'm not doubting that Wilson will be a special player, but our short term memory must be completely shot. Pryor, Beanie, Ginn, Justin Time Zwick, and MC all surpass Dontre in preseason hype.

Besides, if Sam McGuffie taught me anything, it's to wait until we see the results on the field. I'm eager to see, but let's not get crazy with the praise yet.

McHoppy's hype was almost entirely created by their fanbase. He wasn't drawing rave reviews from teammates and the coaching staff leading up to the season. But, your point stands. At this point, it's building to such a fever pitch, anything short of DeAnthony Thomas stats will be seen as a letdown...

As for the other guys you mentioned, they all had tremendous hype/excitement, but Clarett was really the only one that was expected to be a MAJOR immediate contributor.

Lets be serious under our previous offensive system any of the players listed above would struggle to live up to the hype. The offensive system wasn't based around the players on the team and how many points we could score, it was based upon a strong defense then running it down the other teams throat. Wilson will have every opportunity to succeed because this system is going to use his agility out in space. The speed at which Wilson grasps the system will be the only thing slowing him down.

I think good points are being made by alot of posters in this thread. Even though some of the aforementioned freshmen got off to slow starts statistically, they were still provided a spark to the team and excitement for the fans. Dontre is going to play early and likely provide a spark, but I'm not expecting him to throw up huge stats from the get-go. Maybe he does just that right away but realistically, as long as he proves to be elusive in the open field and contributes modestly, we will have a dynamic we did not last year and it will keep the defense honest.
