Here is the most objective view that you'll get from a true fan of either side involved.
OSU OL vs Texas DL - Advantage Texas
Texas has one of the best D-Lines in all of college football. Ohio State has a stronger O-Line than in the recent past, but it will take a huge effort to stay on par with their opponent. Zwick and Smith will need to make quick decisions, because there will be pressure.
OSU Backfield vs Texas LB - Advantage Texas
Texas has a slight advantage, due mostly to the Buckeyes relative inexperience at running back as well as quarterback controversy. The loss of Derrick Johnson makes the matchup quite a bit closer. While new starters Foreman and Killebrew have potential, they will be hampered by inexperience. Harris was an unsung star last year, has great range & speed but will struggle to shed blocks. Backup Hall is solid with experience but not a stand-out. The Buckeye running backs and quarterbacks cannot outrun these guys and should run misderection to take advantage of inexperience. Bigger backs may be able to break tackles.
OSU Receivers vs Texas DB - Advantage Ohio State
Huff is a playmaker...unfortunately he will only be able to cover one receiver. Do you try to cover Ginn, Holmes, Gonzo or Hall??? Each of them had at least 5 receptions in the opener. While the corners are solid, they will struggle with the polished Buckeye receiving corps. It is important for Texas to get pressure with the front 4 so that they can use their linebackers in pass protection.
Texas OL vs OSU DL - Advantage Texas
Ohio State has a potentially great defensive line, but the Texas offensive front is dominating. Top to bottom talent. The Buckeyes will need to show a lot of various blitz packages (ala Miami) to get pressure and keep Vince uncomfortable.
Texas Backfield vs OSU LB - Advantage Ohio State
While not quite as glaring, Texas also has inexperience at tailback with Benson gone. Vince Young has "wow" capabilities, but has struggled with consistency against top defensive units. The Buckeyes flat out have the best linebacking corps in the nation...they can run, they can tackle and they have the experience to stay in position and play within the scheme.
Texas Receivers vs OSU DB - Advantage Ohio State
Texas has great potential at receiver with little proven production. Sweed, Jones and Shipley will someday be the most feared group in the nation but have shown their age at times in route running and consistency. OSU, on the other hand, has a defensive backfield filled with wiley veterans and all-conference players, who have the talent to take advantage of any mental lapse. Tyler Everett will be the X-factor, as he gets his second challenge since moving from safety to corner.
Special Teams - Advantage Ohio State
The Buckeyes have one of the best kick and punt return as well as coverage units in the nation...Texas struggled in kick return coverage last season, but were effective in punt coverage. Selvin Young makes Texas dangerous, Ted Ginn makes Ohio State deadly. Josh Huston has looked just a notch below Nugent-esque, while the Longhorns can't make an extra point. McGee is a solid punter, Trapasso has virtually no game experience.
Coaching - Advantage Ohio State
Mack Brown is a fantastic recruiter and develops talent well, but has a bap rap for choking in the big game. Out of conference, it doesn't get much bigger than this. Tressel can be too conservative and can sometimes let teams hang around even when they aren't playing at their best. I think it all comes down to the fact that Tressel is 6-2 on the Buckeye's biggest stage (3-1 vs scUM, 3-1 in bowls) while Brown is 2-5 against Oklahoma, 0-2 in Big XII Championship games and 4-3 in bowls.
Atmosphere - Advantage Ohio State
105,000 at a night game in the shoe is a factor...anyone who say it makes zero difference is either misinformed, or a homer. I am going to count it as a small advantage, to keep Texas fans from calling me biased.
Overall:
I call this a 23-17 victory for Ohio State. It's going to be close but will come down to experience, atmosphere, special teams and coaching. This will be a defensive game, with the Buckeye's defensive strength (Linebackers) counteracting the Longhorn big play ability of Young and Young. Ohio State will force Vince to throw the ball and use their DB experience as the X-factor. I don't expect a TD in the return game, but believe Ginn or Holmes will break a couple that could turn field position in the Buckeye's favor. The Texas kicking game should be a huge concern and could make the difference in a close game.
Finally:
All this being said, I'm sick of smack talk and speculation...I'm ready to get this one played on the field. I strongly feel the Buckeyes come out with a win in Columbus, and then Texas returns the favor next year. I call a series split a huge victory for both programs because of the national attention we each get and the ticket sales. I love that each University had the guts to step out in such a huge way for this to happen. A game like this will be great for conference preperation and I believe the winner AND loser will be in the top 10 at season's end.
