Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

I would think that most horn fans would feel that we have the better over all team and more experience with one MASSIVE question mark that could easily be the difference in a win or loss vs the bucks....

I think our defense is similar to your (Texas) offense from last year in that we have a ton of young unproven talent that the other team's fans will likely underestimate. Also our offense will be solid and with a sure #1 QB going into the season (not to mention 7 other returning starters, plus several O-Lineman with significant playing time) I like our chances against your defense. Not to mention C. Wells coming into town. Should be a great game again.

I'm debating whether to try and make the trip to Texas next year or to save up for a possible more important bowl appearance... hmmmm.

I dont know many teams who underestimated Vince Young, their OL and their stable of running backs.
he said team fans, of which there was a ton that doubted VY's ability to pass before Sept 10 2005. Tons of analysts came out and admitted they were wrong about him after that game. Their "stable of running backs" included two true freshman in their second game and an injury prone guy in selvin young.

pre 9/10, there were plenty of doubters on various message boards. I would agree that opposing coaches probably were very wary of their potential.

Even though we lose Sims and Mangold, I'm pretty convinced that our OL will move anybody and everybody next year, especially if Rehring is healthy and strong. Barton and Boone will absolutely get it done. In fact, our OL did a pretty good job against Texas' front last year, with Pittman doing a fair job of running the ball...just had continuity issues in the throwing game. Pressure on the QB wasn't the real issue. The Buckeyes should score 30+ in Austin (Red Zone performance just has to improve with Chris Wells as an option).

As for what Texas puts up....well...they have a shot, I think, because of that stable of backs. I also liked Pittman. He was a big-play threat all year.

While I'm not quite ready to predict a 30+ point performance, at least not in February, I like your OL assessment. In fact, we may be underrated at this position. Obviously losing Sims and Mangold will hurt, but for the first time in a long time, we have some options. The returning starters were all playing their best at the end of last season. Boone got his feet wet last year, Rehring has experience, and Cordle has an extra spring practice under his belt. Hopefully guys like Person, Mitchum, and Skinner will take that next step in their progression. We need to be able to run the ball against the Horns. Keeps a young defense fresh, and off of the field for long stretches, and will open up things down field for the passing game. I need to keep reminding myself that it's still basketball season.

Even if our defense is young, we have plenty of guys with speed and size, and sometimes that is better than proven talent, b/c they are trying so hard to make believers out of all the doubters and there isnt a better place to do that than in Austin.

Also it will help our young D, with a great game plan from Heacock, who will be able to stack the box if need be to stop the run and force the young QB to chuck it around the field and see what he can do.

I think our ends are going to be very good pass rusher next year and with Patterson and Penton pushing up the field, I think we are goign to see pressure on the young qb which will help our young lbs and secondary.

One dimensional teams don't usually win the big games.

I agree 100%. Its not like we are replacing these guys with pee wees. I remember Hawk said that Curtis Terry was actually the fastest linebacker at OSU. I will definantly miss Whitner and Salley, but who else is looking forward to see Jamario O'Neal in an expanded starting role? I sure as hell am looking forward to that, along with seeing other players stepping up and continuing the OSU tradition of great defenses. Vernon Gholston, Lawrence Wilson, and Marcus Freeman are just a few names that will have expanded and key roles next season.

Of course I expect some growing pains, but come on, im looking forward to seeing what these kids can be able to do. Id rather have our situation then theres, Colt McCoy(is that his real name or did I just make myself look like an idiot) has never even thrown a college pass.

Yeah there will be a lot more growing pains when playing a very young qb. Remember most of our guys have had meaningful minutes and the fact that they got to learn from such a great defense last year is only going to help them this year.

Game Two: @Texas 9/9/06

Horn here. Our defense should still be fairly stout. Our running game will be diminished, as the OSU defense can concentrate on the backs. Obviously, our QB play will be WAY off, plus the passing game (though all receivers but tight end will be back) but the o-line will be strong. I know OSU is replacing many players on defense, but I'm sure they will be good players. Of course, your offense will be strong. Giving you the edge, but see it going tight to the end. Love to hear your predictions.

I think your brief overview was pretty accurate. I think it depends on how well we can shut down your running game. If we can force your inexperienced QB to beat us through the air, then we have a good chance to win, but thats a big IF.

Your thread will probably be merged here, so if you want to still talk about that game, then that is the thread to do it in:
