Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

Hey Texas fans would anyone mind giving a list of returning starters.

Maybe just a guess at the depth chart.
This is mostly my opinion mixed with amount of playing time from last year:

RBs: Selvin Young or Jamaal Charles or Ramonce Taylor
WRs: Billy Pittman, Limas Sweed, Quan Cosby
OT: Justin Blalock
G: Kasey Studdard
C: Lyle Sendlein

DT: Frank Okam
DE: Brian Robison, Tim Crowder
LB: Rashad Bobino, Robert Killebrew
S: Michael Griffin
CB: Aaron Ross/Tarell Brown

this is what I would consider our true returning starters

as for the offensive line, Dallas Griffin, Tony Hills, Cedric Dockery and others have a good chance of getting a starting nod, depending on where they move everybody around. Backs and receivers will be tough to crack if you didn't get major pt last year, unless the infamous Jordan Shipley reappears. At TE Tweedie has the most experience, Jermichael Finley is suppose to be an up and comer. For DT, look for Lokey and Roy Miller to get the first chance. We also have Orakpo who will rotate in with Robison and Crowder. At LB, depending on who plays where, it could be Drew Kelson starting, it could be Muckelroy, or if you read what some of the hypists think, Sergio Kindle. At corner back Ross and Brown will be starting, and the other saftey position could be filled by Michael Griffin's twin brother Marcus, although fans are clamoring for Kelson to be moved back to safety where he started; however he is the size and speed that Chizik prefers at LB.

I believe Colt is a Redshirt Freshman... I'm definatly looking forward to this game! Usually in the past when teams upset/beat Ohio State I root like hell that the team (that beat us) loses in the future, but last year I couldn't help but root for texas after I saw their performance in Columbus First hand! Here's to around 7 months of predictions and Depth Chart observations because once September hits our game on the 9th will once again be a GREAT GAME! GO BUCKS, and glad to see this threat up and running again!

Sounds pretty good to me! Is he a true freshman? Red-shirt freshman? Soph?
Colt McCoy is a redshirt freshman, we are bringing in top recruit Jevan Snead at QB, actually he has already enrolled and will be there for the spring. Another guy, Sherrod Harris, is also coming in, but not until Fall. He said that he will be studying playbooks, etc. during the sprind, and keep driving down to Austin on weekends to hang around the team.

First shot goes to Colt. Vince has praised his abilities and his leadership qualities, so if that's true, he might already have the pulse of the team which will help. BUT any UT fan who thinks that our QB situtation will not be the biggest issue against tOSU should reassess the team. Hopefully, all the talent that we have at the skill positions on offense will enable the QB to make a smoother transition.

It should also be noted that Colt McCoy played high school at the 2A level (at Jim Ned High School no less), so his previous experience is against a much lower level of talent. Althought the 2A level in Texas must be equal to the 5A level in the lowly world of Ohio High School Football:wink2:

I'm sure it's been discussed at length, but do y'all really think Mr. Wells will see much playing time on the 10th (i'm talking 10+ carries)? I know he's a badass, but I can't see how he'd be an upgrade over Pittman. I see he's bigger, so I guess it might be a situational substitution.

The loss of David Thomas is going to hurt more than people think. Nothing like a sure-handed tight end to help ease in a freshman QB.

But on the brighter side, I really like our depth at WR. Behind the 3 starters, there's 3 more with some experience, and then of course there's Shipley.

I've seen several places that Vondrell McGee will not redshirt. He won't carry the ball much in September unless someone gets hurt, but he adds some very good depth. I'm almost as excited to see him as y'all are with Wells.

Finally, y'all should pay attention to our spring game. The reason: not even Mack Brown knows what kind of offense we'll run. No zone read anymore if Colt starts, and just a bit of it if Snead starts. Both ran the spread in high school though, so who knows. But I know one thing for sure- if we run the I formation all game, I will fling my poop at Greg Davis.

I think Wells will work his way in considerably and that's the general opinion around here. He won't get more carries than Pittman likely(especially in the beggining of the year) but he will get a decent amount of carries most likely.

I like it as a change of pace formation, say 30% of the time, but not a base offense. Given the choice between having Marcus Myers (fullback) on the field versus Quan Cosby on a 1st and 10, I'd take Cosby every time.

Plus, we lined up in the gun most of the time last year. Even without Vince, I think our boys will be more comfortable from the gun. From what I can remember, we only ran 5 different plays from the I last year, two of which require a mobile quarterback. New plays can mean bad execution.

I propose a trade. We get Troy Smith for the game and you get Michael Griffin.

I think Beanie will see more and more action as the season goes along and he gains experience. As has been said, Pittman is THE MAN and I think he will see the lion's share of carries early in the season. BUT...if Beanie is as good as advertised (called a "Clarett without the baggage") I wouldn't be suprised to see him get 10+ carries in this game. This is as excited as we've been about an offense at tOSU in a long time with Troy a dual threat under center, Ginn, Gonzo, Hall and a gaggle of young talent @ WR and a rock solid line. Another thing to keep in mind compared to last September, this offense will be running a lot more efficiently with a "known" quantity at QB, as opposed to last years rotating system. Troy will be on the Heisman watch list early on, and this could be his stepping stone into a legitimate candidacy a la Vince last year.

I propose a trade. We get Troy Smith for the game and you get Michael Griffin.

Denied.
