Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

TEXAS/OSU: Early Thoughts from Austin

Well, the season is barely done, and already, my thoughts are turning to the big, early matchup with your tough squad. It's hard to know how the teams will shape up--perhaps spring practice will provide some clarity. The early advantage has to go to OSU--Vince Young's departure casts our offense in an uncertain light. The QB will have exactly ONE game of experience before he has to face a great group of athletes--not a hopeful prospect. Still, the offensive line figures to be strong, the receivers are all returning, as is the entire stable of running backs. On your side of the ball, a young defense will have many new faces, and it may take a few games for the unit to really click. Texas defense is also a bit of a mystery--most of the starters are back, but there are very important losses in the secondary, something you boys will, no doubt, try to exploit. There is a frosh freak who will get plenty of time at linebacker--you'll see. The OSU offense is the only constant going into the game--- a great QB, big name skill players and a great frosh back. The edge has to go to you, because the offense figures to be so dynamic. There are a couple of intangibles--our home setting doesn't always help us--strangely, Texas often plays better in hostile environments, and plays a little flat at home. The crowd isn't incredibly loud, unless witnessing a stirring comeback. There is one thing you shouldn't underestimate--Austin in September. While occasionally you get a cloudy, temperate day, most often it's like living in a furnace--100 degree plus temperatures with humidity in the high nineties. Our team practices in it all summer, and it could become a factor. (I know Ohio can be pretty rough in summer, but trust me, Texas is hell on earth in September) Lord only knows why the Indians and Spanish decided this was a good place to settle. One positive thing those lucky enough to attend the game will absolutely notice--the greatest accumulation of attractive women known to man. Anyway, love to hear thoughts from Ohio. Since last year, I've felt a kinship with you guys. I think that if you come down and win, you could start a run towards the Fiesta Bowl.

Game has been moved to 8:00 pm EST (7:00 CST). Temperature will not be a factor.

another thing to remember, our boys will be practicing in 90 degree temperatures in July and August. I spent a summer in Texas and it is hot as hell, but its not like Ohio is cool and dry during the summer. Temperature will not be a factor at 8 at night....sorry. Tress will have the guys conditioned. This is not like going to play on the frozen tundra at Lambau Field.

The crowd will be a factor (not as much as in the Shoe, though). As a whole, UT home crowds only really get up for a couple games per year. This will be one of them, especially since this is the biggest home game in a long time.

One thing you folks should follow closely is our spring game. It'll give you an idea of what kind of offense we'll run. As of right now, I don't think anyone (Mack and Greg Davis included) knows.

Speaking of Greg Davis, did y'all see how he won the Broyles award? That's like me winning a figure skating contest. I really hope allowing "Vince to be Vince" has changed his philosophy. He really did call some excellent games last year- usually I can tell what play we'll run by the formation we're in and down & distance. I couldn't this last year.

EH, no doubt you'll have a significant home field advantage, but as tough as we played Penn State in shitty conditions in the most mostile crowd we'd faced in years and how we were able to rally from 11 down in the middle of the fourth quarter to win at the Pig House, I'd say we'll be ready for whatever ya'll can give us.

As for Greg Davis, obviously we're hoping that he'll have to revert to "business as usual" by having a RS freshman with very little experience and a true freshman at QB.

The assistant from Auburn definitely deserved the Broyles award. He lost 3 1st rounders in the backfield and got better production out of their replacements in a strong defensive conference like the SEC.

Mili is right, the QB rotation system is the way to go  With all of the parallels between 05 VY/UT and 06 TS/OSU, you might as well maintain that parallel as well.

Chizik won it as DC at Auburn in 2004, then moved to Texas. You're right about the job that Al Borges did for Auburn's offense this year. But I'm sure the voters are very reluctant to give it to guys from the same school back-to-back.

Can't disagree there. I think DKR, on its best day, would be 3rd or 4th in the Big 10 in terms of home field advantage. Definitely behind Happy Valley and the Shoe, but right there with Kinnick, the Big House, and Camp Randall.

The north endzone is getting redone (supposedly) after next season. Kinda sucks it won't be done before September. You'll be shocked at how far away the north endzone seats are from the action.

Just curious......How would y'all rank the home fields in the Big 10?

Based on what little I know,
1. tOSU
2. PSU
3. Wisky
4. Iowa
5. Michigan
6. Minnesota (does that dome get loud? seems like it would)
7. MSU
8. Purdue
9. Illinois
10. Northwestern
11. Indiana

Am I close?
