yes.

i mean, Giddens is no Oden and Lyle is probably no Conley (or ET or DAR for that matter), but this is a REALLY nice 5-man class that brings a lot of different things to the table with a good talent level across the board.

note: i wanted to use RSCI rankings below but work LAN wouldn't let me, so these are 247 Composite:

5'9 PG A.J. Harris (82nd overall) - lightning-quick ballhandler and floor general
6'5 CG Jaquan Lyle (38th overall) - big bodied guard who can score and distribute
6'4 SG Austin Grandstaff (45th overall) - prototypical college SG, great shooter

really excited to add these guys (along with Trevor Thompson and Bell) to Tate, Loving, Kam, and KBD. it's going to provide a nice foundation through the next four season cycle and hopefully we can pick up just the right couple guys to add to that in 2016.

I admittedly tend to be more pessimistic in my assessments. While I think the '15 class is a solid class and can be part of a solid nucleus in time, I don't see that it compares with Matta's top 3 classes. AJ is an undersized PG who I think will be a good floor general, but has some clear deficiencies (size and shooting consistency). Lyle is the most complete player in the group and has a well rounded game and size to be able to play multiple positions. As long as his heart and head are in the right place, he will excel. I'm not sold on AG as being a great shooter right now. Now, his HS team isn't all that good, so he probably shoots a lot out of necessity and probably takes some shots he might not ordinarily take, but he didn't shoot that high a percentage this past summer either. He's had as many games in HS this year shooting under 20% from three as over 40%. In one stretch of 3 games this year he went 3-34 from three. Can he become a good shooter? Yeah, I think its in him, but he's likely to take a few years like Diebler before he becomes a feared shooter from deep. MM has not improved in 2-3 years. Now, injuries have plagued him and might account for lack of development, but I'm not really sure where he is going to fit in the rotation. He is a very slick passer, but tries to be too slick at times. He has trouble finishing against good HS competition and isn't a very good perimeter shooter. I was once extremely excited about his commitment, then when he backed off that commitment, I was just fine looking elsewhere and I think we could have done better. Giddens is extremely athletic and is going to work his tail off every second on the court. He has a ways to go to be an offensive threat at either the 4 or 5, but I am excited to have an active shot blocker/rebounder in the middle.

This class is not nearly as polished as the '06 or '10 classes. There is no one who is a threat to be a one and done or is clearly going to be a pro. I guess time will tell whether it has guys that improve as much as Diebler (possibly greatest 3pt shooter in NCAA history) and Turner (college POY) in the '07 class. Now, it is a class with a lot of diversity and you could put all 5 on the floor together and matchup size wise/athletically with a lot of teams. The question only time will tell is whether it can form the nucleus of a national championship caliber team.

that's certainly fair.

i think we all can agree that the Thad 5 is still the undisputed top class, putting OSU back on the map and taking us to a NC and even with the early entries giving us a very valuable player in Lighty and a nice two-year contributor in Othello. also, i will admit that it's a pretty tall order to compare the possible impact of this 2015 class to the 2010. Sully staying for two years, Deshaun, Craft being the player he was. as for Craft, it's case in point of how hard it was to project this stuff. who knew he'd basically end up being a great 4-year starter (ish) and one of the best perimeter defenders in college ball? Smith was also a solid 4 year contributor. so, yeah, this 2015 class will probably have to exceed expectations to reach the level that the 2010 class contributed.

but what i do like about the class is its focus. Smith rendered Sibert redundant once Sibert couldn't hit shots here and Weatherspoon didn't do much. so that was two scholarships taken up for two classes that didn't amount to much for OSU. i don't see that in this class, though it could happen. i think all these guys are very different from each other and are talented and bring qualities that won't already be on the roster. Mitchell i think is the only one who runs the risk of not being able to find a niche for PT early on but he is a talented kid and could just as easily be a major contributor as a sophomore.

also, in terms of early entries...maybe Jaquan. and that's the only one i'm seeing right now, and i think we get him at least two seasons cuz he has a lot of stuff to work on. i think most of this class stays 3-4 years, as opposed to only half the 2010 class staying for more than two and only Craft and Zelle for 4.

JaQuan Lyle, a shooting guard in Ohio State's class of 2015, received bad news recently: he needed to have surgery on his meniscus. On Friday, he went through with the surgery.
It's worth noting that this type of knee injury is the same one D'Angelo Russell had as a senior in high school, and it's one that puts you action for four to six weeks rather than most of a year. Best of luck in Lyle's recovery.

i dont want him to replace russell as the guy who bails the team out half the time..it would be better if he had a similar role as KBD Giddens G-Staff Tate and loving....all sharing the burden...

russell is 1st team all america...top 3 draft pick..im sure lyle thinks he has what it takes to do the same...we shall see next year

I think that article was more related to him playing the #1 and #2 positions during the season. If I recall correctly, that was one of the things that really turned Russell on to Ohio State was when Matta told him that he would help him be more like Evan Turner with regard to play some PG. I do not think that that article was just about scoring but the PG position is very important in close games but I think you know that.

Outlook for 2015: D'Angelo Russell is leaving for the NBA, Lyle will inevitably be looked at as his replacement. Lyle was a late addition to the Buckeyes' 2015 class, committing in January after the first four members had already signed. He'll likely be in the starting lineup next year, it's just a matter of which guard spot he'll start at. He has the vision to play point, and the big body to get to the bucket. Lyle's jump shoot will need to improve.

Interested to know that a couple years ago Matta had offers out to Tyus Jones, Russell, and Lyle and told them that the first one to commit got the slot. Well, Lyle fell just short academically of going to Oregon and Jones decided to play with Coach Kcyoazki so we got the consolation prize:biggrin: and a year later we get another one. From the article, here is Russell's take I Lyle.
"He's similar to me," Russell said Thursday. "He's a big guard that has incredible vision. He can score the ball. We're similar in so many formats. I just told him straight up, you can through the hype of getting recruited, going on all these official visits and having something to talk about. But the sooner you get committed to Ohio State, the better you'll be, the less stress you'll have and you'll be the best player you can be."

Russell's lasting impact on Ohio State might be helping the Buckeyes land his replacement before he left.

Lyle will have to impact the game the same way Russell did, but at nearly 40 pounds heavier than Russell, that will simply look different. The 6-foot-5, 220 pound Lyle isn't as fast or smooth as Russell, doesn't quite have the same shake to his game.

I am a big Lyle backer. I think he is the type of player OSU needs to have out there more often. Honestly I even liked him over Russell back when they were both being recruited, because of his ability to play a strong brand of basketball.
