ESPN (A bunch of Death-Spiraling maroons)

To further my reminiscing of Sportcenter, Keith Olbermann and Dan Patrick were hilarious on that show. There were some things that still stick with me to me this day, especially since Sportscenter had trouble at times filling a full hour with sports highlights (which at the time is pretty much all Sportcenter was, not 20 minutes of highlights and the rest some random idiots talking about sports).

One was a riot that broke out in a South American soccer match. The fans in the stands were whacking each other with bamboo, to which Olbermann said "what was it, bamboo pole night?"

Another one that always stood out was a random soccer match no one cared about, but hey, they had to fill time. There was a goalie who made some big saves in a game, and I am pretty sure he showed up more than once on Sportscenter. Yet they would show him make a big save and Dan Patrick would shout his name "Sambuca Poliuca!" (I have no idea if I spelled that even close to right). It became a semi running gag for a while. Not that funny reading it here, but take my word for it, it was funny.

Finally, the best was the commercial after Olbermann left.

It was Gianluca Pagliuca. Still used in some of my circles today. Some younger guys have no idea WTF we are talking about.

Then you should watch ESPNU. Their guys include Mike Bellotti, and nobody can tell me that guy doesn't know football. Add Tom Luginbill and other knowledgeable commentators, and you have shows worth watching.

ESPNU is basically the only one of their channels I watch except for games. And I have to say, between BTN and the three ESPNs we have on cable, college basketball season is like a smorgasbord. Hardly a night goes by without at least one entertaining matchup.

Nice try, Tom.

ESPN's Rob Parker on RGIII: 'Is he a brother or is he a cornball brother?'

You know a conversation has gone off the rails when Stephen A. Smith becomes the voice of reason.

That was the situation on Thursday's episode of First Take, the ESPN troll-fest most famous for serving as the ongoing Tim Tebow conversation the world never asked for.

Rob Parker, a former Detroit News columnist, questioned RGIII's blackness and claimed he wasn't authentic. "Is he a brother, or is he a cornball brother," Parker asked.

"I keep hearing these things. We all know he has a white fianc?e. There was all this talk about he's a Republican."

The bombastic Smith had to put an end to it.

"I'm uncomfortable with where we just went," he said. "RGIII, the ethnicity or the color of his fiancee is none of our business, it's irrelevant, he can live his life in whatever way he chooses. The braids that he has in his hair, that's his business, that's his life, he can live his life."

A transcript of the discussion is below:

Rob Parker: "But my question, which is just a straight, honest question, is: Is he a brother or is he a cornball brother?"

Cari Champion: "What does that mean?"

Skip Bayless: "Explain that."

Parker: He's not real. OK, he's black, he kind of does the thing, but he's not really down with the cause. He's not one of us. He's kind of black but he's not really, like, the guy you want to hang out with because he's off to something else.

It's a good thing that media columnists and others are (and have been) calling out "First Take" and Rob Parker for what it is today: Scripted BS.

That entire network is more-scripted than WWE these days and has gone so far off the deep end that there's probably no redemption.

Add to that, it seems like majority of ESPN reporters have gone to stealing reports from other reporters and pawning it off as their own (i.e. Sources).

You don't need ESPN these days, regardless if turning it off does anything to the company's bottom line (it doesn't).

That's what the "Script" called for.

There's a reason why Dan Patrick and others call it "First Fake", since the other party needs to have the exact opposite opinion on all subjects.

I love DP's digs at ESPN

one a few days ago where they were trying to get confirmation on some stat or soemthing, he said I know ESPN is gonna steal this in a few hours so I wanna make sure we get it right so they don't get embarrassed as well
