Early Departures for 2007 NFL Draft (merged)

See, I think Samardzija can blame his QB though. I'm not impressed with Quinn, because most of his best throws involve putting it more or less up for grabs and letting his receivers go get them. Quinn's stats get worse in the big games too, because (I think) he's not a good QB under pressure.

I think Jarrett is a poor man's Ginn with slightly better hands. I'd probably draft Ginn above him.

You're right about Calvin Johnson. I saw two Georgia Tech games this year and I can't list how many times the announcers would run a replay, circle Johnson who was wide open, and then wonder why Reggie Ball was throwing to the guy in double coverage. Johnson had 1000+ receiving yards this year and would have had 1500 with just about any other quarterback in the country. I think Johnson's the #1 receiver in the draft.

Oops :wink2:

Well, in the end, I think the NBC propaganda machine has hyped both of these guys to be better than they really are. While I'm skeptical of Quinn being worth a #1 overall pick, I'm not skeptical that he can be a very solid QB in the NFL. I do doubt that of Samardzija at WR though.
Kiper currently has him as #11 on his draft board. I'm not big on Kiper's analysis of talent -- but there are a number of GMs who seem to agree with him every year (as well as some who don't). Once juniors declare, I suspect he'll drop Samardzija down to about 20. But even there I don't think he's worth the risk. I'd honestly be disappointed if Clevelad or Seattle drafted this guy in the 1st or 2nd. I could be wrong, but I wouldn't be surprised if he has a brighter future in baseball (but then, I'm basing that off of what the NBC folks have said... so who knows...)
Back to Ginn, though. You said earlier you'd take Gonzo earlier. As a pure receiver, I definitely agree. But I think Ginn's draft status will largely be based on his additional worth as a return man. The draft is always a risk-reward endeavor. I think some GMs and coaches will figure that even if Ginn doesn't turn out as a great WR, he can contribute in the 2-deep and be a dangerous return-man for years.

Mandel's take on early entrants.

Outlook: Ginn, a projected top-10 pick, is as good as gone. Gonzalez has said he'd prefer to return to Columbus but may ultimately conclude his stock will never be higher than it is now. Pittman also wants to come back but may be smart to go this year when the running back class is notably weak (whereas next year's could be stacked if rising juniors Darren McFadden, Steve Slaton and Ian Johnson enter the mix). Barton is testing the waters but will likely be back.

Didn't Jarrett miss a few games earlier this season with a shoulder injury? I also heard mid-week near the end of the season that he could miss another game because of a concussion.

He missed one game (the only game he missed at USC) and was used sparingly in the next game to get him back into things.

There seems to be more and more Junior RB's entering the draft. This could be a good thing by pressuring Pittman to stay in college for his Senior season - not that he was a heavy pro lean or anything.

Any new inside updates on Ginn or Gonzo? If both Calvin and DJ go, I think it would be best for Ginn to stay put. However, his stock wont get any higher than it will be if he comes up big in the National Title game. Should Gonzo have a good game on Monday and declare to stay for next year, he will be an preseason 2007 All-American. With a new QB comming in, he will be the reliable target that gets used heavily in big games and Im sure the media will give him the respect he deserves. He could land himself inside the top10 draft selection with the right amount of yards next season.

PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz. -- The decision of whether to stay or go has become more agonizing than Ohio State's underclassmen ever imagined.

Ted Ginn, Antonio Pittman, Anthony Gonzalez and Kirk Barton all received their paperwork back from the NFL which gives them projections of where they're likely to go, but none are ready to announce a decision of whether they're leaving for the NFL or returning to Ohio State for their senior year.
