Deion Sanders (HC Colorado)

There’s a bunch of articles coming out about Deion by the transferring players. None of it smacks as saltiness, but seemingly honest takes. Sounds like he runs it like an NFL franchise which may not be the best fit fit college ball - or at least at a program like Colorado. I could definitely see his ego giving off the “if it isn’t MY players, I don’t care” vibe.

As of today 55 players have hit the portal, leaving the Buffs at only 60 scholarship players on the roster.

Deion is a nice name and all but Colorado still isn't a "destination" school and they aren't going to be pulling in top 10 recruiting classes every year.

They need players to stay and develop as they can't just pick and choose elite recruits to replace guys every year.

Building whole damn teams off of transfers every year isnt a long term winning strategy either.

If Deion is goin to constantly send guys packing because he "didn't like what he saw" after 1 year (or less) things are going to be rough.

Yeah….their roster was brutal. He’s run off a lotta kids from said roster.

Meanwhile, kids all over the country are visiting Colorado to see if it’s a good fit. And he has 2 years left to capitalize on the Covid year (this year and next year).

He’s said some pretty sensitive things that have offended liberal people, which isn’t great when your base is in Boulder, CO.

He’s actually quite old school and yet comes in to disrupt the machine.

I’m rooting for him too. I think having 25 scholarships available is somewhat intentional. I think there’s about to be an avalanche of transfers pouring in…..

How many players do you want to keep from a team that was one of THE worst teams in all college football the year before?

How many mistakes would you make if you cut every single one from a 1-11 team?

I mean yea this is partly true, but It’s not like he’s replaced them with much better talent. The majority of their transfers he brought in were FBS or lower level FCS type guys.

but most were FBS winners.. time will tell if he bet on the right horses.. albeit tough to not be better than 1-11

Yea it will be hard to not look "better" all of their losses besides 1 were by 20+ points.

They could only win 1 game again though, don't see more than 3 wins that's probably the best case scenario. We won't really know if Deion is worth much until year 3.

He has 21 bodies on hand as of this last weekend.

Doesn't include the additional 2 transfers - who were Deion' recruits through portal.

They can't even field a team at this point.

This seems pretty spot on. The numbers seem to suggest death to me. Regardless of how good the players were you still needed some warm bodies to practice effectively. I feel like next season will be really bad but that maybe year 2 will be much better. Regardless, this will be discussed for years to come. Like "remember when Neon Deon took over that college team in Colorado and ran off over half the team and had to forfeit the last 2 games of the season due to a lack of players......"

I am making myself laugh now. I actually agree with the above that he has a damn good staff put together and he is 100% acting as the CEO. The product on the field will be all the OC and DC. And he will handle all the marketing and meetings with the alumni and recruiting. But damn he has turned this roster over fast. Realize it will be basically a 70-80% new roster come Fall now. May not be a good thing but it is a thing.
Here is the thing though….he turned over the roster of a 1 win team. What does he have to lose?

And a loss by 2 points or 50 is still a loss.

If he's thinking for the longer term, his strategy may be to blow it up now and take the hits so that he can recruit better players during the year. It would make sense rather than to hold onto players way below what he wants. There is a great chance that his JSU story will not transfer to Colorado and his ego misses the change. This could be a smoldering dumpster fire of note before year end.

Maybe he's aiming for the #1 pick in the draft?

I don't get this situation at all. I understand his want to win now but he's literally leaving himself no shot of winning this season. Not only that he's going to get kids hurt because of a lack of depth. I get being old school but to come in and say "I don't want any of the players" is such BS. He should've gave everyone a shot before writing them off like he did. Who knows maybe the team wasn't as dreadful as he thinks and it was a coaching/scheme issue.... to just wholesale write off all these kids from day 1 is ridiculous. For that I hope he doesn't win a game.

Seems like a case of the Junction Boys, new coach (in my analogy Bear Bryant) is a tough guy and kids run off. That can be a real issue if you don't have a contingency plan, i.e. not enough bodies. I am rooting for him to succeed but that is pretty rough.

On the location, I've only been to Boulder once but damn it is a nice mountain town from my experience...maybe a tad hippy for me but it was a a really beautiful place. If the athletic support is there to help you advance, living in Boulder would be the least of my concerns as a recruit. Women were not hard on the eyes either. But having this much attrition, even with a crap roster, is probably a bad thing.

Its almost like he's playing Madden but in real life. When I was younger, I'd do the Dynasty mode, and release half the team, and sign the best free agents with no salary cap. As well as swing ridiculous trades in my favor. I'm rooting for Deion, and he's making it harder and harder. Its almost like he doesn't realize that a team needs chemistry. And he can no longer out talent everyone he plays anymore. And wins and losses snowball a program in CFB. When the losses start piling up this season(and they will), how many of those highly rated players from warmer climates will still consider CU? Its fun to play for Deion when he's selling hope after a 1 win season, and he has a reality show, cameras following him at every move, etc. But what really happens when Year 1 he finished with 3 wins, and they get obliterated by the mid level teams(i.e. Arizona, UCLA, Wash St and Cal)? Not sure the 5star DT from FL still has the excitement to go play in the mountains, when he's watching CU get their brains beat in every week
