Deion Sanders (HC Colorado)

He's certainly earned his way to this point, and I think he's doing a lot of smart things that need to be done to be successful at CU. He's actually already been successful there. We're talking about Colorado, which we wouldn't be doing if he weren't there. With USC/UCLA leaving and the expansion of the playoffs coming, he has a hell of an opportunity to make a splash.

That said, I find myself rooting against him. Part of that, I'm sure, is that I never particularly liked him. His whole act, at least at this point in his career, comes off as really phoney and performative to me.

He's won everywhere he's been by out talenting everyone on the schedule. He can't do that at Colorado. Except maybe CSU, there's not one sure win on their schedule. It'll be interesting to see how he handles it if they're 1-3 and down by 50 at home to USC.

You guys are giving him credit for cleaning house at a shit program.....without acknowledging you don't need to be a good coach to be able to run off players.
I don’t understand how you can watch A&M purchase the best recruiting class in history immediately prior to having an absolutely awful season and think that Deon’s coaching style is definitely going to work out well at Colorado.

Will he be better than basement dwelling awful? Probably. Will Colorado be a great team? I’ll believe it when I see it, and am leaning probably not at this point.

Ok further update. I guess at the moment I find this story to be more interesting than most of what is happening around college football.

42 scholarship players have left the program since Coach Prime gave his speech on day 1. I am not sure if that includes the kids who graduated. But regardless. That is a ton of bodies to replace. Additionally, I read that they only had 4 true Dline players for the Spring Game. So that is not going to work.
I am no longer in the group of think he might fail. I am firmly in the group of "they are going to struggle next year for sure".

With all this said. If you grade basically 90% of the roster as subpar. I am not sure how you replace the roster without this level of chaos. If he can coach and can get better players I still think it is a minimum of 2-3 years. If he can somehow get a winning record next season I will 100% be impressed.

It’s fascinating to me because I’d be willing to bet the talent of at least half those players leaving is a fit for Colorado over the next 2 years. It’s not like Prime is revitalizing Miami or Va Tech, places that has had a track record of getting 4-5 star players. This is a 2-3 star school, and those veteran 2-3 star players could have added serious depth in the intermediate time.

I have no care if they fail or succeed, but the storyline is popcorn-worthy.

Seeing what Sean Lewis was able to do at Kent State w/ Dustin Crum and Collin Schlee, I would feel very confident he can squeeze plenty of juice out of Sanders at QB. Charles Kelly at DC has a ton of P5 experience, was a DC at FSU, and spent the last few years as ADC at Bama. I think the Lewis hire was the best hire of the year....he's such a gem.

He's built quite the staff and acts as the CEO, focused on recruiting and fundraising. With those two items being the focus, I think he's a fantastic fit in his role.

The hype machine is set to 11, and the crash will be glorious.

Agreed.
I know it wasn't a good team, but leaving Spring with maybe 25 players on the roster is going to make for a rough time.

He's going to get 60 new players to gel and find an identity in just Fall camp ?

I also sniff some NCAA violations... he will probably need a lot of extra time, and im sure Deion is the type to think he can skirt rules.
But CU is a public school subject to FOIA. A sanctimonious one too. The one kind of place NCAA "investigators" can still dig things up.

This is a bit of a catch22 though.
If they get 3 wins next year, does he have to do this all over again?
Did they hire Deion only because the previous staff couldn't recruit? Maybe it's not all on the players.
Urban took a team with a sub-500 record and made them undefeated while keeping most of the roster intact.
I would suggest if he got 20-25 of "his recruits" and another 10-20 grad transfers who are "his guys" -- that would be enough for an elite coach, like Urban, to make CU a bowl team next year.

But i dont see that happening with a 60+ man roster turnover, including basically all of the starters and experienced players.
Not a great vote of confidence when leading rusher, leading receiver, and the receiver who just showed out at spring (yea yea Childress effect) all jumped ship.
It's not just the garbage bench warmers leaving, it's guys who started and performed -- and, even if recruited over, could be quality depth.

Tldr Deion is probably going to be another Brian Kelly type. When he doesn't win, it's the players fault.
It gives me the impression that he cant scheme.

This seems pretty spot on. The numbers seem to suggest death to me. Regardless of how good the players were you still needed some warm bodies to practice effectively. I feel like next season will be really bad but that maybe year 2 will be much better. Regardless, this will be discussed for years to come. Like "remember when Neon Deon took over that college team in Colorado and ran off over half the team and had to forfeit the last 2 games of the season due to a lack of players......"

I am making myself laugh now. I actually agree with the above that he has a damn good staff put together and he is 100% acting as the CEO. The product on the field will be all the OC and DC. And he will handle all the marketing and meetings with the alumni and recruiting. But damn he has turned this roster over fast. Realize it will be basically a 70-80% new roster come Fall now. May not be a good thing but it is a thing.
