Defensive Staff Next Year?

Yep he's a good DB coach and elite recruiter. This year he might of missed on some but I can't blame them with no clarity if he'll be here next year plus NIL and all that brings.

As far as Day there are rumors the bears are interested and if Day is leaving and not getting fired like the past however many coaches it would be to the pros
But after a year in which he/the team just won the Rose Bowl and is in the process of replacing assistants, already looking at Day to leave is just crazy to me. Especially since he hasn't shown much drop off in bringing in talent. It seems like some fans are looking for an excuse for Day to leave after the scUM, and not appreciating that we have a great coach that many teams would be envious of. OSU could be in scUM's position right now, and many don't seem to understand that

A question about Al Washington;

I thought he was supposed to be super recruiter waiting to take over for Larry Johnson on the DL recruiting when he retired? So I am confused when I see Washington as a rumored departure. There is no doubt the LB room has been a mess but there are mitigating factors and especially if you were asking the guy to coach "out of position" as it were.

I am confused.

It looks like he’s split his time relatively evenly throughout his career as a coach between LBs and DL, with a few other positions thrown in for good measure.

And although it has received speculation from fans that he could move to DL at some point if LJ retires, I have also seen speculation about Randall Joyner and Kenny Anunike as the heir apparents for LJ Sr (https://www.on3.com/teams/ohio-stat...n-ohio-state-buckeyes-football-legend-career/).

So I think it’s far from a forgone conclusion that Washington is the replacement plan for LJ Sr.

It seems likely that Knowles (with Day’s input, obviously) is evaluating the current staff—Coombs and Washington assuming LJ Sr is staying—potential options for replacements, and how hard he want to push for coaches to stay given the available alternatives.

I hope it gets ironed out quickly. Most of the best info seems to being coming from Austin Ward, if anyone has an on3 subscription to share any updates from today.

The latest I’ve seen is that Coombs and Washington would likely be welcomed back—especially Coombs—but that they themselves are also evaluating their other options, and like I said, will probably come down to how hard Day/Knowles feel like pushing to keep them if they do identify something they would consider leaving for.

Just sayin': Right now Ohio State has the 10 assistant coaches allowed by the NCAA. On the defensive side there is

Knowles: Defensive Coordinator
Johnson: Associate Head Coach / Defensive Line Coach
Washington: Linebackers Coach
Coombs: (probably now) Secondary Coach
Fleming: Special Teams Coordinator

The 2021 season assistant coaches' annual contracts are up on 31 Jan 2022. So that could be the magic date when we should know who is or isn't still on the payroll.

Posted this in the rumor mill but Austin Ward has published it all in an article.

Coombs = OUT

Washington = OUT

Expect another secondary coach hiring to be announced today or tomorrow. Coach comes from the NFL level. Ward says Tim Walton, Jacksonville's corners coach, is the target.

Ward also said Eliano was targeted as corners coach. Conflicts with what Thamel is reporting (safeties). Regardless, looks like a wholesale reset on the defensive side of the ball, save Larry Johnson.

So, next year's defensive staff likely looks like this:

DC/LB - Jim Knowles
AHC/DL - Larry Johnson, Sr.
Secondary (CB or S) - Perry Eliano
Secondary (CB or S) - Tim Walton
