Defensive Staff Next Year?

A quick look at the 247 composite shows that Ohio State's last 5 star (before this year) was in 2017. The same year as Alabama's last 5 star LB recruit.

Between the 2017 and 2022 classes, the following signed 5 star LB recruits:

Georgia x4
Oregon x2
Clemson x2
Maryland
PSU
LSU
Auburn
USC (now at Ohio State, funny enough)

Who did the research, @5 STAR U-G-A ?

OSU has issues at LB, because they haven't developed anyone in awhile. Sure it's nice to sign 5-stars (though OSU rarely develops them to fruition), but they aren't developing the Schlegels Lees or Werners either.

Considering the career trajectories of some “can’t miss” 5 stars over the past 20 years (D’Andrea, Sabino, Grant), or just the rotten luck of some others after they made it to NFL (Shazier, McMillan) I’d say OSU’s LB room doesn’t need a better recruiter, but rather an exorcism.

I don’t know what deity we pissed off in the mid-00s but the bad juju has been fuckin’ brutal. Maybe this is just our karmic penance for two decades of pumping out guys like Randy Gradishar, Pepper Johnson, and Chris Spielman.

Whatever LJ decides it feels like we need to install a succession plan.

The greatest asset he provides is his reputation which leads to attracting talent.

At this point it is clear his career is winding down and he won’t be here the duration of kids coming in now.

Interested on ideas on how to broach this.
It would be great if we had a “coach in waiting” as an analyst or GA.
But I don’t see why a coach like Joyner who currently is a full time assistant would do that.
Maybe Al Washington can be tabbed and groomed to take over.

Just feels like recruiting DL will become more difficult with prospects knowing LJ will be retiring soon.

I think the guy that's the DL coach at Ole Miss is an OSU alum who some(myself included) had coming in if LJsr retired this off season. He's in his late 30s, and would be a big get for S&G.
Day will also always have options in the NFL as well.

Nobody is positing that Day won’t be able find a qualified replacement.

My point is LJ is a magnet for recruits.
But the uncertainty about his future negates that.
I’d like to be able to have a definitive plan in place and be able to communicate that to recruits.
There is no way LJ can look at recruits going forward and tell them he will be there for their entire career at OSU.
Of course no assistant can.

Bingo! No coach at any level can promise a recruit with honesty that they'll be there for their entire collegiate career. I'm sure there were recruits LJsr promised he'd see graduate when he was at Ped St, I'm sure Coombs did too when he left for the Titans, Hafley did as well, Taver Johnson did, Drayton, and the list goes on and on. Uncertainty goes with coaching, and it'll get figured out when LJsr makes a final decision. And then OSU makes up their recruiting loss with a solid hire. Tis life

Linebacker is the one area where teaching scheme and techniques must be emphasized. With Davis I thought he wanted to teach 600 level courses to players who needed the basics first. He had them confused and they guessed a lot. I don’t know the answer but it’s a teacher over recruiter.

Not only that, but the Schiano scheme of having LBs close to the LOS, decimated the defense the minute a skill player hit the second level.
I don't think its one over the other, coaches need to be teachers who are also great recruiters if you expect to win and compete for NCs.

I've been watching the recruiting pages, not with an eye to see the recruits, but to see who's on the recruiting team. Hadn't seen Stud (never have), Coombs (some say he's 'lost it'), Washington (Knowles will decide - he's a LB guy), Hardline (no worries, his cupboard is full), Barnes (gone already) on the recruiting trail - along with Day and/or Johnson. Coach Johnson may or may not coach this year, but probably not 2023 - if rumors are close to being accurate. Day's been 'in on' all of the post early signing targets, and his message will be the same -'not sure if XXX will be back, lots of things in the works, but we can guarantee that whichever coach is there will be as good or better'.....Really the only message he's got. Am betting on Johnson sticking around for one more year, Washington staying on, with Knowles maybe taking a bit more charge of LBs, Wilson staying (what's not to like about the O?), Hartline (no #1 WR this year), looks like the UCLA OL guy is in, (who'd I miss?). Pantoni and Mariotti in place - maybe best news. Don't know if Day will designate an 'heir apparent' to Johnson - how's the asst DL guy doing? If tOSU doesn't make the playoffs two of next three years, (and not get blown away), then I think Day will be either fleeing to NFL or another high profile college team. Anyway, however it plays out, still see tOSU in a pretty lofty place.

Not sure how Coombs "lost it", when he was the primary recruiter(according to 247) for all of our DBs in the frosh class, and Jyaire Brown and Ryan Turner in '22. He has a frosh with national accolades in Burke and some very talented soon to be Sophs in Johnson and Hancock.

And why is Day leaving even being brought up? He's in year 3! My God has 1 scUM warped some in this fanbase. We had an "off year " with the season ending in a Rose Bowl win.

Yep he's a good DB coach and elite recruiter. This year he might of missed on some but I can't blame them with no clarity if he'll be here next year plus NIL and all that brings.

As far as Day there are rumors the bears are interested and if Day is leaving and not getting fired like the past however many coaches it would be to the pros
