Defensive Staff Next Year?

The more I think about Saturday, the more OK I am with it. Perhaps the program had gotten complacent. Complacent that they didn't need to focus on defense as much as in the past. Complacent that the tsun win was a given. "Hang A Hundred" speaks to the complacency that a win is a given and the only question was how bad we embarrassed them.

Well, no more because the game I watched was nowhere near as close as the score. It's gut check time now, so let's see how they respond.

Yeah, it was pretty clear for most of the year, Saturday in particular, that wholesale changes are needed on the defensive side of the ball. Whatever it is that they've been doing since Hafley left two years ago is not working on any level. I've been saying I want a complete purge, but I think keeping a couple of guys (Washington, Barnes?) might not be a bad idea as they're at least young and could provide some recruiting continuity. LJ has been great here, but his units the past two seasons haven't come anywhere near approaching the hype. It needs to start with a DC who can install a scheme that is effective. We have most certainly not had that the past two seasons.

I'd give LJ one more year to see if he can turn it around with Sawyer and JTT.

There seems to be a rumor floating around that he may be retiring. I've come back from the ledge from my "scorched earth" feelings over the weekend. I'm okay with getting the DC first and letting him pick & chose who is worth keeping...if anybody; but Day needs to be searching high & low to find the best defensive mind money can buy, because the defense the last two seasons cannot be tolerated.

That isn't going to be enough if they don't do some pretty aggressive roster management as well.

Eh, I think that comes with any major philosophical shift on either side of the ball. Do we have the horses to be elite out of the gate? Probably not, but it isn't as if we are totally barren. There's enough talent for a solid base to start. In the age of the portal, holes can be plugged in the short term.

Yeah, portal is what I was getting at. The upperclassmen on defense are almost all empty roster spots at this point. Ricks would be a good start but the front 7 is a fucking shit show.

Problem is Day seems insistent that the DC run what he the HC wants to run.. the single high to stop the pass… not gonna find many elite DCs who are like “oh ok HC i’ll coach your way even though i’ve proven my way works”

Yes. I think part of what looked like lack of effort on Saturday was more being lost and unsure with no confidence the staff had any answers or adjustments that seemed to work. It really is time for a change, the talent isn't as bad as many schools with much more cohesive and consistent Ds.

Well, lets hope a soul-cleansing beating is enough to soften him a bit on that. Saturday proved that probably isn't the best strategy going forward.

Yeah I don't like that don't dictate. I think that was part of the issue with Coimbs he was a 1st time DC that was told to learn hafley's system. Freeman runs single high as well if we go there.

I'd love for us to go Freeman and Raymond. then Figure out what else we need from there
