And that is my question. What is the reason for 2 full classes largely failing to develop? Is it that they were just a bunch of “misses” recruiting? Or is it a lack of development from the coaching staff? If it’s the latter, is it because the position coaches are sucking at their job, or is it the overarching scheme?
I wrote a fucking novel detailing how defensive problems leading back to '17 are still effecting the team, but the short is that save Hafley, (and recently recruiting by Coombs) the defensive back 7 recruiting and coaching have been mediocre to abysmal since '17. Barnes is the lone guy Day seems to trust now, and I'd be surprised if we see Coombs and Washington stay on to next year.
Thought Washington was the future here, but Browning failed to reach his potential, and your 3 4th year players struggled to do the basics this year and now 2 of them are gone. Not sure what happened there, if something else is going on behind the scenes, or Washington just isn't it.
DB development is less of a concern now, but safeties are still needed and if Coombs does leave, that creates more questions regarding development and recruiting.
No one can question Johnson as a DL developer, but there have at least been some recruiting misses leading to a downturn in production and impact against equal competition.
Scheme really stands out to me because you would think that the 2018 & 19 classes would be getting onto the field mostly in 2020 & 21…under the current regime. What would these guys look like if Hafley stuck around for another year or two? Some of those kids are probably a wash, but I gotta think some of them are still salvageable under a better scheme/better coaches. But, yes, I would be shocked if we aren’t dipping into the portal.
Scheme , or lack-thereof, just amplifies all the issues we've seen in recent years. Another year with Hafley gives you a chance to build up young players, create depth, and maybe get another coach in to replace Mattison, and start a line of continuation after Hafley leaves. But none of that happened, and Day was too busy trying to keep a season alive to focus on what wasn't happening under Coombs last year. Didn't hurt that he was also landing sorely needed talent.
I hope Day keeps Barnes, finds an LB coach with DC experience, and hires a 5th defensive coach instead of a ST coach. Barnes isn't perfect, but he's shown an ability to fix a shit storm on the fly and get a young back 7 to keep OSU in some games this year. I don't think a DC can fix the issues we saw yesterday. That starts earlier with better LBs and depth, a DL that gets push or at least stonewalls the opponent at times, and some toughness.
No matter what's done, OSU is going to need to find stability and cohesion on the defense for the first time since...Ash? Maybe Barnes can provide that, otherwise Day better find another Hafley that works magic.
