Defensive Staff Next Year?

The '18 and '19 classes have only produced 3 contributors, with one of them being a former offensive recruit! That's just plain bad development, and a number of guys who now seem SEVERLY overrated in HS. So we're sitting here with a complete loss of 2 years of defensive recruiting, and having to turn to underclassmen to pick up the slack. So we better be hitting that transfer portal hard as well this off season for various defensive players. And honestly hope some defensive players decide not to return to take up schollies for more talented players

Part of the problem is the guy they got from USC, Palaie Gaoteote, who tallied 96 tackles in his first 2 years contributed 8 total tackles in his first year here. Granted, he was behind because he missed fall camp, but there’s no indication the defensive staff can do anything with talented transfers.

One downside of getting a young-up-and-comer is losing them quickly (ala Halfley).

I don’t know how they strike the right balance but after coaching changes, Covid year and now an influx of younger guys that need to shine, one major thing that side of the ball needs is stability. Gotta convince someone to stick around.
Who is Michigan's DC and why don't we just hire that guy

I can see that happen to TSUN's DC. All those young coaches are climbers. He will bolt in a year or two.

It's amazing how a scheme can change a team.

Look at TSUN... they got rid of Brown and pick up a young kid from the NFL.

OSU should try to get a younger kid from the NFL and a older coach with experience coaching (preference Big 10) and recruiting, like they had a couple years ago.
I dont that it's so easy to just get a young and old coach. I thought we had those 2 "odd couple" style of coaches in Schiano and Grinch and that didn't go well in 2018. Not all young coaches want mentors from old coaches. And not all older coaches want to "take a young coach under their wing". You better damn well know personalities if you do a co coordinator system. UGA has 2 young DCs, and before that only had Mel Tucker. Some schools like former HCs for a short amount of time. There's no one easy answer to employ your DC/DCs

I'm sure they could figure it out with Elias Ricks...
And you can technically say that Steele Chambers was a transfer

I was thinking of Hafley and Mattison. That worked like a charm.

ScUM's DC was handed off to Hairball from his brother in Baltimore. No way do I see us hiring him away from being under that family.
I wouldn't put it as if the Harbaugh's own that guy. I think Hairball asked his brother who he could get which would be like Hafley. A young smart coach. So far, the kid isn't proving to be a good recruiter. Which is why I think you need a older coach in the mix.

Agreed, and that would be a good combo. But they have to be willing to work together, and one needs to know that he is calling the defense. We can't have 2 guys wanting to be the chief and the other not realizing he was supposed to be the supportive Indian(sorry for not being PC). Mattison was already had one foot towards retirement when we got him and Hafley was hungry. Idk how many older coaches are out there like, and willing to take a backseat to a whippersnapper

Agree... Day has some work to do. Assuming he is willing to make changes.

Any scheme that requires less thinking, I am for.
