DE Sam Hubbard (All B1G, National Champion, Cincinnati Bengals)

Sam is a perfect example of what we have established through recruiting. They talked about him being on fire in practice and a really tough draw against offensive lineman because of his quickness and yet he can't see the field. This is not the first time as we have done the same with a number of highly talented freshman such as Marshall, Lee, Apple, Conley, Mitchell (transferred), Knox, most of our WR core, Slade, and it keeps going. They talk about needing to play freshman but to be honest I see this trend continuing because quite simply we are just so freaking stacked everywhere.

Everywhere I personally look there's a log jam to me. The Db's are young and the talent is there to field a 2nd unit that would start for 80% of schools. The WR's the same, QB's the same, and now we are doing the same with DL and LB. I've never seen the future so bright at OSU' and I can't wait to see Sam take the field next year because at 6'6" and around 250 he will be hell for offensive lineman on the pass rush and RB's trying to go wide on him due to his speed being closer to a Safety than it is a LB.

In addition to his physical skills, as a former safety, he should understand coverages better than most D-linemen. Dropping him into coverage on a zone-blitz should be deadly because he should cover like a safety instead of like a typical end. He would really allow us to throw multiple looks at offenses without substituting.

You know you want to read 3,300 words about @Sam_Hubbard_. I spoke to 13 teammates/coaches about the talented DE.

HUBBARD JUST GETTING STARTED

BuckeyeSports.com

It took one season and three positions, but Sam Hubbard will finally get a chance to show why he was Scout.com's highest-rated Ohio State signee in the class of 2014.

Cont'd ...
Great read and insight into a quality player and better kid.

Dryden and Jwins, thanks for posting the Ryan Ginn article. Two important quotes stand out to me: 1. "At the time, he said he was still really committed to lacrosse. He gave me a list of five schools and it was Ohio State, Michigan, North Carolina, Stanford and Duke. He said if one of those schools offered a scholarship he’d take a look at it. I think he had the idea of playing lacrosse and football. Surprisingly enough, Notre Dame was not one of the schools he listed as a football school initially."

I don't know about other Cincinnati schools, but Kelly's act is not selling well in this part of the town. It wasn't that long ago that the Irish could cherry pick for talent here.

2. "Rodenberg: The Ohio State coaches never led Sam to believe this or that. They knew he wasn’t going to be a free safety, which he played for us. They let him know that and they let him know they’d have to find out where his niche was going to be. I tip my hat to Ohio State for not lying to him and for trying to figure out where he was best going to fit in."

I've often wondered what coaches will say to pry a kid away from another school. Either Sam was such a special talent that they just wanted to see where his talent would lead, or OSU's ethics in such matters exceed my expectations

I don't live by Moeller anymore, but I have friends and family that are alum, and I have hears no such thing about Kelly not being liked over there. I think Kelly has focused his recruiting efforts on a more national scale, especially after going to an NC. He only got 3 commits from OH last year and 1 from Cincy, that says he's not going after the city as much unless it's a special talent(Taylor for 2015 from Moeller, and Kramer for 2016).
ND not getting a lot of Cincy kids like Hubbard has more to do with Urban and Coombs absolutely killing it down here and making Cincy more of a priority than the previous staff, and it's working. And it also helped having that spring game at PBS. Hubbard standing out and playing well the next few years will only help our emergence into Cincy as well, though Hilliard may have more of an impact since Moeller isn't well liked among HS circles
