DE/LB Thaddeus Gibson (official thread)

Good question...but I see it from a different angle. Say Gibson did not play basketball or run track. Do you really believe Thad, or any other HS kid is going to spend those gained hours in the library or studying?

Any high school kid who is told they are amazing and have scholarship offers to some of the best universities pending they get the grades, yes. I would think a quick tour to Ohio State (or any of his big offers) followed by a visit to the community college that should be able to get any HS kid studying. Ohio State playing for thousands/millions of people for free or play high school basketball which in likely-hood slightly increases your chances of paying to attend a school in hopes of transferring. If he pulls it off more power to him, but I think the original post is a legitimate question.

For the average high school student I'd agree with you though, it's better that they receive some great life lessons and guidance rather then put themselves in situations to have to guide themselves.

You would hope the fact that his scholarship to Ohio State hinged solely on his grades over the next few months would motivate him to study rather than be on the streets...

More of the same.....He will visit tOSU this weekend after his basketball game on Saturday. Interesting that Gibson says after his visit to tOSU, if he doesn't make take any additional visits he could make a decision.

Gibson stats he is good grade wise with a 2.5 GPA but needs to bring his ACT up from a 15 to 17.

"Ohio State should be ranked No. 1 in the pre-season," said Ohio linebacker Thaddeus Gibson. "Vince Young is going to the NFL. Another reason I like them is that they are close to home and they have some great players, like Troy Smith. I'm also good friends with Brandon Smith (freshman linebacker) who also went to Euclid High School.

Ohio linebacker Thaddeus Gibson (6-2, 212, 4.5) said he favors Ohio State over Tennessee, Michigan and Penn State.

"I 'd say there's a 65-70% chance I'll commit to Ohio State over the other programs," said Gibson, from Euclid High School. "I'll be going to visit Ohio State this weekend (Jan. 13) with my parents. This will be the first trip they have come on. I've already been to Michigan and Tennessee, but I went alone.

"I don't think I'll commit to Ohio State when I'm on my visit. I'll want to come back home and think about it before I make my decision. I might go to Penn State the next week. But I haven't talked with the Penn State coaches in about two weeks, so I'm not sure.

"Ohio State should be ranked No. 1 in the pre-season," he said. "Vince Young is going to the NFL. Another reason I like them is that they are close to home and they have some great players, like Troy Smith. I'm also good friends with Brandon Smith (freshman linebacker) who also went to Euclid High School.

"Tennessee would be my No. 2 choice behind Ohio State. I felt comfortable there on my trip (Dec. 2). The atmosphere is great and I liked the coaches and the players.

"I also like Michigan because they are close to home too, about two and a half hours away, like Ohio State. Michigan is also a great academic school. They are ranked pretty high.

"All these schools want me to play outside linebacker. I'm a great pass rusher off the edge. I'm very athletic. I do my own stunts out there. I don't just blow through someone. I shake by them with moves that I have, like a swim move. I'm just natural, I guess.

Final senior (7-3) stats: 56 tackles/30 solos/11 sacks/2 blocked punts/4 fumbles recovered/2 fumbles caused/1 kick return for a TD
Gibson said he expects to play in the Big 33 game this summer, pitting the best players in Ohio versus the best in Pennsylvania. He reports a 2.7 core GPA/15 ACT--Feb 11 retake.

Where he is going to verbal has not been a question for a while...the only question was whether the staff could get him into school. Now that the staff sees some hope in getting him in, there has been much more attention. Thad will likely verbal on his visit, however, that will not guarantee that he ends up in Columbus come fall.

Do you really believe Thad, or any other HS kid is going to spend those gained hours in the library or studying? I'd rather see these kids in sports and getting valuable guidance than have them out in the streets finding ways to entertain themselves.
in college, despite competing/traveling and balancing larger workloads for class, I performed better academically during the season. During the season I rarely had the chance to put homework off untill later in the day. I either did it during my limited window of time, or it didn't get done.

It all depends on the student. He may perform better in class when he has a disciplined routine to his life.

The recruitment of TG has been very interesting. I am very pleased that it seems like a realistic possibility that Thad will have the opportunity to play for the home team.

Compare this to the Dennis Kennedy saga and you can see the impact that JT and the staff have made with tOSU admissions dept. Good stuff.

This would be a great story one day when Thad runs on the field as a senior to greet his family. I hope it happens and I am there to see it.

Always root for the kid.

Boy, Thad didn't hold back with his info AT ALL there, did he? Even gave us a precentage. That lineup of Homan/Moeller/Johnson/McCarthy/Gibson doesn't sound too far fetched at all now...

Note that he's retaking the ACT Febuary 11th. He won't know his grades until WELL after NLOID. JT and crew will be taking a risk on him, but I think we can all agree that this is one guy you'd take a risk for

From the Michigan site...........More of the same.........Gibson is not sure he will take a visit to PSU. Ohio State, Tennessee and Michigan are in the race at this point. In somewhat of a suprise and turnaround, Gibson states that Michigan is still on top. Contradicting previous updates.
