DE/LB Thaddeus Gibson (official thread)

I have been wondering this about several recruits. When is the deadline for guys like Thad to improve their grades? Is it NLOID, end of senior year, ?

When is the deadline for raising test scores?

What are their options if they don't raise their GPA or test scores if they still want to get into OSU? Prep school, community college, ?

It just seems with all the speculation on the grades of recruits it would be nice to know what their options are academically. Then we can make a better guess on what the chances are of them getting in at OSU.

There is no hard "deadline". Most recruits and schools target NLOI day, but if academics are still an issue, it isn't much to wait another month or two. More often than not, however, the recruit will have been offered scholarships, and will pick what school he wants to attend. He then must get his grades in order to be able to attend the school. If he can't, you get an "academic casualty", which can result in the recruit attending a less academically strict school, or possibly a prep school or junior college. Nine times out of ten, the scholarship is offered and accepted, and if there are issues, they are scrutinized at a later date.

In Thad's case, he has been offered a scholarship, and can accept that at any time. If he chooses tOSU, he can sign his NLOI in February, but that scholarship is contingent upon him making grades, so if he does not get his grades in order, the scholarship could/would be revoked. From all accounts, all he needs is a slightly better ACT score, which he is taking again in February, so he can accept his 'ship from tOSU before hearing whether or not he made it...and even if he didn't, he has another opportunity to take the ACT.

Deadlines?

There are no NCAA stipulated deadlines for passing muster with NCAA Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse.

Student must pass through the above before going on to make an application to the college for which they may already have issued a verbal commitment.

There is no requirement per se for a student to pass NCAA Eligibility prior to publicly stating a preference for one institution over another. In practical terms though tOSU is not going to let a kid verbal to them if they clearly have issues with NCAA initial eligibility, tOSU's requirements are stiffer than those of the NCAA clearinghouse.

The deadline to get your grades in order would be before application is made for admission. (Just like any other student, athlete or not).

The options you outline are those used by students wishing to improve their academic standing.

I'm sure Gibson, his family and the coaches all well informed on what options and responsibilities are in play for Thad.

Scout and Rivals are COMPETITORS. For some within the two, there is respect and courtesy while with others there is lack of respect to say the least. Within those or any of the sites there are people you can trust that they have evaluated by looking at players on film or in person and that they have a clue with no bias. With others it is just the opposite. Take the ratings with a grain of salt and the sites for information (not always accurate, you can look at as almost as a tabloid. They MUST crank stories out there, accuracy can be sacrificed) poosible comparison and entertainment. No more no less. I find Greg Biggans and Jeremy Crabtree from Rivals to be excellent. Bill Kurelic from Rivals is also tops. Allen Wallace, not so much. Believe it or not Max Emfinger gets some cred. These are opinions of MINE. Yes, they are shared by others within the industry and you can be there are others that fell different on these same people than I so. One way or another. Here is a promise. Jim Tressel has never given his evaluation of a recruit during the recruiting process to ANYONE from a recruiting site.
