DE/LB Nathan Williams (official thread)

hes a great pass rusher. needs to improve vastly against the run imo

I would agree with this. If you put him in on obvious passing downs though, he becomes a real weapon for this defense. With Worthington and Heyward getting a push up the middle, and Gibson and Williams speed rushing around the outside, it is going to make for one hell of a long day for a QB.

I dunno bout that though... I think he's a pretty good run defender also. He makes some tackles for loss pretty frequent. I really think he's doing a great job at both. Obviously his pass rushing is his strength but don't sell him short on the run. "vastly" is a pretty strong word describing how he needs to improve.

He has a motor that doesn't stop. The best pure pass rusher on a team full of good defensive lineman. He tends to push up field way too much which gets him out of position at times against the run. Something Thad used to do but he has learned to play more disciplined which Nathan will do with time.

Gotta give some props to Nathan. He had the costly offsides that cost Thad a pick-6 against Iowa, but in the OT he ran a stunt with Doug Worthington on Doug's huge sack on third down. Without Williams properly going inside and occupying blockers, Doug doesn't get that sack.

Fine team play in OT by Nathan.

Nathan makes the All-Big Ten Academic Team!

I'm kind of a newbie, but wasn't there a worry that he wouldn't qualify for admission?

It's awesome to see someone, who was at risk, thrive both on the field and in the classroom.

Great job!!

Nathan Williams impressing. The guy who I thought really had a good day was defensive end Nathan Williams. It was only shells and shorts, but he looked especially active today as the first-team LEO. He was using his hands and tossing guys around. He got into the backfield a lot during the scrimmage and batted a couple balls down. He had a handful of pressures and while Jim Heacock called it an open competition between Williams and Solomon Thomas, it?s hard to think it won?t be Williams who replaces Thad Gibson in the starting lineup this fall; especially after watching him Friday.

Prior to the kicking scrimmage , the team practiced for a bit. The big news out of that was starting DE Nathan Williams suffered a left knee injury. It occurred just before I got there, so I don't know what happened, but he wasn't putting much weight on his leg at first. It was iced down, and by the end of the afternoon, he had it wrapped tightly. He was not taken to the locker room or anything.
