Ravens worked out Ohio State defensive end-linebacker Nate Williams, sources say
Ravens have shown interest in Buckeyes defender
By Aaron Wilson The Baltimore Sun
April 6, 2013

The Ravens have displayed steady interest in Ohio State defensive end-outside linebacker Nate Williams, according to league sources.

That includes having a private workout and meeting with him during the draft process.

Williams is a hybrid pass rusher at 6-foot-3, 242 pounds with 4.76 speed in the 40-yard dash.

At the NFL scouting combine, Williams bench pressed 225 pounds 24 times and recorded a 35-inch vertical leap. He also had a 9-5 broad jump, a 4.44 20-yard shuttle and a 6.99 three-cone drill.

Williams underwent microfracture and arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, but returned to record 40 tackles, three 1/2 for losses and two sacks as a senior for the Buckeyes.

As a junior, Williams had 45 tackles, 8 1/2 for losses, 4 1/2 sacks, one interception and three pass deflections.

He finished his career with 132 tackles, a dozen sacks, 26 tackles for losses, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

Williams draws high marks for toughness, aggressiveness strength, intelligence and instincts. The question marks on him are chiefly size, his knee injury and how he'll project to the NFL as an outside linebacker prospect.

Williams has primarily lined up in a two-point stance as an edge rusher.

Draft analysts have compared him from everyone from Erik Walden to Lawrence Sidbury.

Draft Profile: Ohio State's Nathan Williams aims to continue comeback
By Tyler Dunne of the Journal Sentinel
April 13, 2013

Green Bay ? The thought of life without football was piercing. One game into the 2011 season, Ohio State's Nathan Williams injured his right knee and needed microfracture surgery. The doctor told him it'd very difficult to bounce back.

So Williams considered life as a pharmaceutical salesman. He considered pursuing a career in special education. After the injury, Williams absolutely thought about losing a game he has played since he was 4 years old.

?Oh, for sure. As sad as that sounds, yes,? he said. ?It was a scary, scary thought. I don?t want to ever go through that again. It was definitely a tough time. I?m not going to cut it short. It was a hard time I had to go through.?

There was immediate regret, an immediate punch of ?Wow, what the hell did I do?? he admits. Williams could have declared for the draft and been a third- or fourth-round pick. Instead, his football career was in serious jeopardy. He sat out that full 2011 season, the entire ensuing off-season and returned for the 2012 season. To date, the whole ordeal is motivation. The outside linebacker prospect ? who has drawn interest from the Packers ? is annoyed with being ?put on the back burner."

The injury and the aftermath drives the 6-foot-3, 241-pound Williams, one mid-round, pass-rushing option for teams.

?I feel great wherever I go,? Williams said, ?because I know once I get there, they?re going to ask where the hell I came from.?

Williams signs with Vikings
CHRIS HOPPES
Sports Editor

Miami Trace graduate and Ohio State standout defensive end Nathan Williams has signed a free agent contract to play in the National Football League for the Minnesota Vikings.

Williams was not selected in the draft, which was held Thursday through Saturday, but signed with the Vikings as a free agent Saturday after the draft concluded.

"Nathan will be going to the Vikings' mini-camp, this weekend," Williams' agent, David Lockett said. "We feel this is a great opportunity for him in Minnesota. I think they really got a good player. I think they'll find they'll be pretty happy about it.

"I expect they'll use him as a linebacker," Lockett said. "It's tough to say what the coaches are thinking. Once they see him, we'll see how things go, but I imagine they'll use him as an outside linebacker."

Williams spent the first part of the NFL draft with his family and his dogs, trying not to dwell on whether or not his life-long dream would be released.

"I watched a little bit of the draft the first day," Williams said. "After that, I kept my mind on other things; I worked out, I went shopping for food.

"My mind has been on this for so long," Williams said. "I've been waiting on this moment for, oh, gosh, 20 years now. There were so many built-up emotions."

During the process of the draft, Williams was receiving calls from several NFL teams, expressing interest in him.

"Their linebackers' coaches were talking to me, just displaying their interest in me," Williams said. "They were telling me what I could expect, stuff like that, just scenarios on what it would be like if I went to that team.

"I was taking a lot of phone calls, but my agent (David Lockett) was very busy working for me," Williams said. "I was really wanting to listen to more of his advice on everything, because, that's his job."

Williams spoke with the Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Jets and Miami Dolphins, in addition to Minnesota.

"It was all about who was giving me the most interest," Williams said. "You weigh interest and opportunity together and Minnesota just seemed like the perfect place for me to be.

"Rick Spielman is the Vikings' general manager," Williams said. "He's Chris Spielman's brother. My linebacker coach is going to be Fred Pagac Sr. He played for Ohio State, graduated from Ohio State. His son (Fred Pagac Jr.) was my LEO coach my freshman and sophomore years at college.

"My agent is located in Minneapolis, so, just all those things combined made my decision very easy," Williams said.

"I know they drafted two linebackers, but I'm the type of person who's going to go in there and compete to my fullest capability," Williams said. "I am as hungry as I've ever been. I truly feel that I will be on the field this next season, hopefully fighting for a starting spot.

Chad Greenway, fellow linebacker Nathan Williams 'fine' after scopes
by Tom Pelissero

MAPLE GROVE, Minn. -- Chad Greenway's arthroscopic knee surgery "went fine" on Wednesday morning, Minnesota Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said, reiterating the strongside linebacker should be ready when training camp begins in late July.

The same goes for undrafted rookie linebacker Nathan Williams, who had a previously unannounced scope on one of his ankles that has given him trouble since his days at Ohio State and sidelined him the past two weeks at OTAs.

"Just wanted to go back in, same thing (as Greenway's), just kind of clean it up," Frazier said before teeing off at the team's annual golf tournament benefitting the Vikings Children's Fund.

"(Williams) had some ankle problems in college. This was a chance for us to go in and clean that up and do a scope on his ankle and it sounds like everything went fine."

The Vikings wrap voluntary organized team activity practices on Thursday. Greenway and Williams will miss next week's mandatory minicamp, which begins on Tuesday. The Vikings have eight other linebackers on the roster, meaning double reps for some backups.

So Texan rookie DJ Swearinger (noted goon at SCar) tore up Dustin Keller's knee with a cheap shot this past weekend and Brian Hartline complained about it in the media.

It all shakes out that Keller is IR-bound and Nate Williams gets the Miami roster spot.
