DE/LB Nathan Williams (official thread)

"It felt like I played 50," Williams joked. "Hopefully I wake up and I'm able to walk."
Well, he was joking but it is a little scary. Hopefully, Nathan will not have a setback.

This seems to be good news (for Nathan):

On Ohio State?s official two-deep for this week?s game against Central Florida, Bennett and Nathan Williams are listed as backups at defensive end to JT Moore. Meyer and defensive line coach Mike Vrabel did not have a timetable of when Bennett might return.

Wednesday briefing: Nathan Williams will play
September, 19, 2012
By Austin Ward | ESPN.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The first step forward might have been too big.

Nathan Williams returned from his microfracture knee surgery in time to play in the season opener, and the Ohio State senior played more than anybody expected.

But it turned out to be too much work, and the next step for the defensive end went the other direction with soreness forcing him back to the sideline the following week.

He returned to the lineup again last weekend in a win against California and played even more than he did in the first game, but this time Williams hasn't even considered the possibility of missing another outing, setting his chances of playing at "100 percent" for Saturday's non-conference finale against UAB.

"I'm not worried," Williams said after practice Wednesday. "The first game I was a little worried because I took a helmet right on my knee, one of the very first plays I was in -- which was crazy, and I was like, 'Wow, thanks a lot.'

"I didn?t have that problem last game, which was lucky for me. I came back the next day and I was still able to run during Sunday practice and stuff, and you could tell just by running out on the practice field if you?re going to be able to go or not."

All the early signs were positive, and the continued health of Williams is significant for a defensive line that has emphasized getting more pressure on the quarterback after a sluggish start.

The Buckeyes supplied plenty of it against the Golden Bears and had six sacks to show for the effort, even without getting one from Williams -- who is still playing catch-up after being limited during training camp and trying to shake off the rust built up after a full year on the shelf.

"I?m coming along pretty well, a lot faster than I anticipated," Williams said. "You know, every day is just a new challenge for me when I wake up, and it?s been going great so far. I?m able to run and do the things I need to do, so I just have to keep executing and tighten up my technique, which is pretty off right now.

"Once I get that corrected, the sky is the limit."

Long road back
Microfracture knee surgery has done in many athletes, but defensive end Nathan Williams beat the odds and feels blessed to be playing again
By Bill Rabinowitz
The Columbus Dispatch Friday October 5, 2012

The moment he fell out of his hotel bed that August afternoon in 2011, Nathan Williams knew something was seriously wrong.

Ohio State was in the middle of two-a-day preseason practices, and Williams had awakened from a nap. When he tried to get up, his right knee gave out, and he collapsed to the floor.

Williams managed to get upright, and he called his coaches to tell them what had happened. He could barely walk or even bend his leg.

Williams tried to get through a walk-through practice but couldn?t.

Thus began what he referred to as ?so on and so forth.?

A lot is contained in that innocuous phrase ? much of it, Williams would rather forget. But the ordeal makes his return to the field this season all the more rewarding.

Tonight, the senior defensive end will play on national television for the undefeated Buckeyes at a sold-out Ohio Stadium against Nebraska. Such a game is why he came to Ohio State, and why he fought so hard when the odds were against his returning.

?It?s a blessing,? Williams said. ?Being able to play this week, throughout all the adversity from last year, is amazing to me.?

Wow, you can't help but root for this guy. Things could have gone a much different way for him, and as much as I'd have like to get (what I feel like) was just one full, healthy season out of the kid as a fan, the degree to which he's grown and matured over his career here is just awesome, whether he stays/continues to get healthy or not.

As the process moved forward, he began working daily with OSU physical therapist Kristin Holbrook and followed the plan diligently

Small world, I did some rehab with her when she was in grad school to be a physical therapist. She was working under my therapist. I was rehabbing my first ACL tear, and she was one tough woman. I think it was due to her having had I think 3 ACL tears. She was very good, even as a student.

out for Indiana

:(
Ohio State defensive end Nathan Williams won?t be in the lineup because of a medical concern when the No.8 Buckeyes play at Indiana, sources told The Dispatch this morning.

It could not be confirmed immediately with team officials, though apparently Williams did not make the trip to Indianapolis, where the Buckeyes stayed last night with the intention of bussing late this afternoon to Bloomington, the site of the game.

Unclear was just what the senior?s ailment is. He underwent micro-fracture a year ago to repair his right knee, soreness in which has sidelined him in practice from time to time this season and from a previous game.

J.T. Moore is listed as the backup at Williams? wild-card, defensive-end position. But with the return of defensive lineman Michael Bennett to active status a couple of games ago, the Buckeyes could use a variety of combinations to full-in for Williams.

John Simon played that position at times in Williams? absence last year, and freshman Noah Spence is being groomed as the successor there.

Nathan Williams Has Right Tutor in Audition for NFL
By Brandon Castel

Not many athletes ever come back from the kind of injury Ohio State?s senior defensive end suffered at the beginning of the last season. When the words microfracture surgery surfaced, most people anticipated Williams would never play the game of football again.

At least not at the same level he was playing at in 2010, when he was one of the most disruptive players on a Buckeye defense that shut down Ryan Mallett and the high-powered Arkansas offense in the Sugar Bowl.

He missed almost his entire senior season because of the injury, but it opened the door for him to return as a fifth-year senior under new head coach Urban Meyer. While they clearly missed his intensity on the field last season, there?s no telling where the undefeated Buckeyes would be defensively without him in 2012.

?There might be guys who play just as hard, but Nathan plays as hard as anyone we have. He throws his body around for our defense and for our team and we?re seeing some good results. There?s just some technique things that he knows we need to continue to work on, but he?ll continue to develop.?
