DC Matt Patricia (Official Thread)

What the hiring of Matt Patricia does for the Ohio State football team's recruiting efforts

Patricia has not coached in college in over 20 years. A lot has changed since he last coached in the college ranks. The Buckeyes are the defending national champions, so that should help the cause. At the same time, being likable is a massive part of being a successful recruiter.

Patricia has not been known as a likable coach at any of his stops. Because of that, it seems likely that Tim Walton will be spending the majority of the time as the primary recruiter for the Buckeyes. Quite frankly, most of the position coaches will be used as the primary recruiters instead of Patricia.

That is the best way for this marriage to work. If Patricia is going to be in Columbus for more than one year, the rest of the coaches have to make up for his lack of personality. Of course, the results on the field matter. If Patricia is able to put a top-ranked defense out there, the results will speak for themselves.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are one of the programs that is in the top five in recruiting every year. We'll see if that sustains with Patricia leading the defense.

I'm not sure where they are getting not likeable at any of his stops. Patriots players and supposedly the eagles org loved him. He was just an Arrogant Asshole in Detroit as a HC

This guy is like a savant. Apparently he just loves talking football and has little interest in anything else. I sincerely hope he knows how to dumb it down now. On the other hand, those players who can keep up with him would benefit tremendously.

Excited for the incoming season. Maybe bumpy but no doubt would be fun.

RPI doesn't admit dimwits. He is, literally, a rocket scientist (aeronautical engineer) by training.

OK, but the sentiment was pretty much I trust {insert Ohio State coach here} because I am an Ohio State fan and have no other option. It's as generic as those "How do you get a {insert rival school here} alum off your porch? Pay him for the pizza" jokes.
What's really generic is accountants and supervisors watching 40 football games a year and being like "I'm not sold that this guy knows as much as I do about his job" lol

Sure. But accountants and supervisors are right when they say shit like "Boy, I dunno if Coombs is ready to be the full DC" or "I feel like running straight into the interior DL of a team that's only strength is the run game, specifically in the middle, might be a bad plan". Or conversely....when I saw Will Howard as the choice, I thought "nice get". Did I automatically become as good as Ryan Day then? No.

Nobody who thinks this hire is questionable assumes they know more than professional football coaches. Well.....I'm sure some of them are as stupid as people who think women and black folk cause plane crashes......but the majority of people who question things like this aren't thinking "that fuckin idiot Day, I'm better than he is". They're thinking "this sure looks obviously bad from the jump.....not sure why somebody who should be better at this can't see it".

I think trivializing that into a statement like "you think you're better than Ryan Day?" is doing a disservice. I don't even think I'm better than James Franklin.....but this hire looks suspect anyways.

Said it before, but I like this hire quite a bit. His flexibility in both his fronts and coverages throughout his NFL stops, being adaptable to the on-field talent, coaching up said talent and then his deployment has a quality track record.

Questionable HC, really can't call him a 'people person' or a natural leader by that same extension. But his X's and O's I.Q. is top tier. The other stuff, well, we have great position coaches for that.
