DC Matt Patricia (Official Thread)

Perception is reality until you change reality. It can absolutely be done and I get your points on Patricia coming in for a slice of humble pie/brand change. Not exactly the same scenario, but Sark did it with Bama/Texas and I am really impressed with that comeback. But are we trying to replicate what tcun did with Wink Martindale in terms of NFL success translating to CFB, or is this really the best hire? I don't get paid millions to make that call, but it seems like almost the exact same move and maybe it works.

I'll go in with a clean slate, I just thought it was an odd hire. If it works out for 1-2 years and he gets back into the NFL after keeping our defense elite, I would be thrilled. We have young defensive coaches that will step up when the time comes (MG, JL, Walton). If Patricia can transition us into that scenario, job well done. A good coordinator is gone in 1-2 years regardless, so that part does not bother me at all.
Oh I hear you on this being a baffling hire. And if Day didn't win the Natty and also make some previous hires I thought were questionable yet worked out, I'd be even more on the side of those thinking this won't work out. But seeing the hires of: Hafley, Frye, Walton and even Knowles work out, I'm willing to give a pretty big benefit of the doubt. None of those names did I have on my bingo card of being OSU coaches

Larry Johnson messing up his ability to run multiple fronts and creating that rift again is also a possible issue.
I just posted a video in the 2024 defense thread that's an interview with Denzel Burke(On Bryant Browning and Chimdi Chekwa's pod) where he alludes to that rift. As well as the questionable play calling late in games from Knowles.

Patricia seems like a coach that will gameplan for the opponent and not just keep a scheme that will take players multiple years to learn that can be rigid.

Per Mick Walker at LR:
from a former NFL coach that work with Matt Patricia for a few years. He had some great things to say about Patricia.

“He’s a football genius.”

Was the main thing he kept telling me. Cited Patricia’s background in aerospace engineering as something that shows his intelligence both on and off the football field.

This person felt like Patricia primarily gets a bad wrap because of his time in Detroit. He also said that Patricia and Ryan Day are tight. They spent time together whenever Patricia was in Columbus for Pro Days.

The final thing he said was “He [Patricia] is gonna crush it at Ohio State.”
I'll just add this to this post. Ways that Patricia can be creative with his current roster

Yeah, that rift with Larry Johnson could definitely be a factor. If the coaching staff isn't aligned, it affects the whole vibe and execution on the field. The interview with Denzel Burke you posted seems to hit the nail on the head about some internal struggles. And yeah, Knowles’ play calling late in games has raised some eyebrows could be more adaptable. Patricia's approach sounds solid though, focusing on tailoring game plans to the opponent rather than sticking too rigidly to a long-term scheme.

New Ohio State defensive coordinator predicted to chase impact presence in spring transfer portal

image0-44.webp

Yahoo Sports made three bold predictions on Friday, and one included Patricia's involvement in the portal. Here's what they had to say:

Apparently Ohio State can reload at key assistant coach positions much like it does on the recruiting trail.

Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles is gone but former NFL head coach and star assistant coach Matt Patricia is taking his place. The longtime New England Patriots defensive coordinator arrives in Columbus with three Super Bowl rings and the credibility to immediately take over the Ohio State defense.

One thing Knowles did a great job with during his time at Ohio State was making sure the Buckeyes were prepared to play a variety of defensive schemes. Ohio State had the personnel to allow Knowles to be as creative as he wanted and it resulted in the Buckeyes fielding the best defensive unit in college football.

The 2025 Ohio State defense is shaping up to be a good one but the biggest question mark is at safety. All-American Caleb Downs has one of the safety positions locked down but the other spot is seemingly up for grabs. Malik Hartford, Jaylen McClain and Davison Igbinosun could end up in that role but odds are good that Patricia and the Buckeyes add a safety in the spring transfer window.
This prediction seems like a solid one. Ohio State chased after Purdue safety Dillon Thieneman before he opted for Oregon. With Jordan Hancock and Lathan Ransom now in the NFL, the Buckeyes lack a physical and versatile option for the slot safety and corner hybrid role they used last year.

Hartford and McClain are slighter-framed options, so it's possible Patricia would instead have Downs closer to the line of scrimmage and flip the tactic from last year. Igbinosun indeed seems more fitted for the slot than an outside corner because of his physicality, and that alignment could potentially reduce his penchant for taking bad penalties.

Ohio State’s defensive coordinator hire of Matt Patricia draws praise from ex-Buckeyes LB Bobby Carpenter

The legendary Ohio State defender has a message for skeptical Buckyes fans.

Former Buckeyes linebacker Bobby Carpenter had a message for those Ohio State fans who questioned the hire. The former national champion and All-American defender spent one year on a Patricia-led defense in the NFL and recalled that experience in his defense of the coordinator move.

"For those Buckeye fans who don't like the hire… for whatever reason," Carpenter wrote in a social media post. "Played for Matty P in New England… he's a smart and measured as you'll find. Great communicator and incredibly creative. It didn't work in Detroit as a HC… happens to a lot of coordinators… but he's not hired at the HC so don't worry about that."

Carpenter's final year in the NFL came with the Patriots in 2012 — Patricia's first year as the franchise's defensive coordinator. He spent most of the offseason with the team before his release from the roster prior to the season opener, and he rejoined the squad midway through the season when he played four games as an injury replacement.

Patricia proceeded to win two Super Bowls as the Patriots' defensive coordinator, adding to the one he claimed in 2004 as an assistant offensive line coach.

Ohio State hires Matt Patricia: 5 things to know about Buckeyes new defensive coordinator

With Patricia set to lead the Ohio State defense, here’s a closer look at the coach and what you need to know about him:

He’s a Super Bowl champion

His most recent work in the NFL isn’t encouraging

He has past controversy

He has college experience

Just sayin': And in case you believe coaching the defense at Ohio State is actually "rocket science". Well, if you do, Ryan Day has that covered too...

He’s an actual rocket scientist

While coaching a Big Ten defense, demanding of a job as it is, it isn’t rocket science, Ohio State just hired one of the few people qualified to handle it if it were.....

Patricia graduated from RPI with a bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering, though he never pursued it professionally. The closest he came was working as an engineer at an air and filtration systems company in Syracuse.

The pencil behind his ear isn’t just for show, either. While it wouldn’t work on a laminated play sheet he carries around, Patricia told the NFL Network in 2019 that he will keep note cards with him that he’ll write on with the pencil over the course of a work day or game.
