DC Matt Patricia (Official Thread)

OK, but the sentiment was pretty much I trust {insert Ohio State coach here} because I am an Ohio State fan and have no other option. It's as generic as those "How do you get a {insert rival school here} alum off your porch? Pay him for the pizza" jokes.
yes. i agree with that.

but that positive "sentiment" / benefit of doubt comes with the cache from the natty. i doubt day would be getting a "trust the coaches" bump otherwise.

there's not just coombs. there are many others that day sent packing who weren't getting it done in short order. fleming took a couple years, admittedly, but maybe he was contributing in other ways.

i may have missed a few, but here's what i remember off the top of my head:
- schiano
- davis
- coombs
- fleming
- barnes
- eliano
- yurcich
- washington

i can't remember off the top of my head for urban, but it was nowhere that long. and i'm not including guys on day's staff who left on their own accord (knowles, alford, hafley, mattison, frye).
do you even withers bro?

Stated this in another thread, but after my initial poor gut reaction and seeing a negative consensus on from the fanbase on MP, I have come around on the potential upside of this hire.

Guy knows football at an elite level. His defenses were top level at NE. After seeing the other coaching title changes and Ross Fulton's take on it, that really excites me. It's a very, very short list of guys that can come in with the cachet to work cohesively with LJSr and Matt is one of them. We need to be able to excel at multiple fronts and formations and hopefully the combination of Day's meeting with LJSr and this hire are an indication that these two will work with each other as and not against each other.

I think the majority of Matt's reputation came from how he interacted with the media with his time at Detroit and the the rumblings that came out of that poorly performing locker room. It really felt like he unsuccessfully tried to emulate Belichick's personality and coaching style. In any case, I trust Day to: A. not bring in a guy who wouldn't fit well into the locker room and coaches room and B. be able address any issues that should arise as shown by how he handled the obviously tenuous situation in the defensive coaching room at the back half of last season.
Ditto.

People who know more about football than I ever will have stated his intelligence and growth.

That is good enough for me.

I am not qualified to comment on this choice
but I do know that Patricia has more Super Bowls rings (3) than any college football coach on the planet not named Belicheck
and that's gotta be worth something

I mean... if I was him and showed up for my interview, I'd just set the 3 rings on the desk and take a seat

Maybe I'm missing something, but Day wasn't the HC and making staffing decisions for half of those names. Unless you're making a different point that has gone over my head. Coombs, Fleming, Washington, Barnes and Eliano were Day's hires. And he pivoted pretty quickly to everyone but Fleming.

my point was about letting guys go, not hiring. it goes back a few posts about urban hanging on too long to guys who were problematic.

Listen, if you were one that was defending Day up to the CFP then how can you be doubting his hiring chops?

Either trust the coaches or don't.
Analyze me. I defended Day as the best possible coach in the NIL/transfer era, was completely broken and resigned to the fact that Ohio State might need to move on after 11/30, enjoyed the hell out of the entire playoff run, and think this is more likely than not a good hire (but still really think it would be best if LJ Sr took this opportunity to retire).

My football knowledge is probably less than the next guy on Twitter, so my 2cents is just ... that:

MP's hire struck me on two things.
1. Ryan Day is prioritizing performance over ANYTHING else. Ryan is the face of the football program, period. The main job of everyone else on the staff is to win for him. I'm totally on board with this ruthless Evil Ryan Day. Love it. I suspect that when Knowles brought that offer from PSU to Ryan, the response was that the Buckeyes could upgrade with that kind of salary. I personally think this is.

2. I feel good that no one is saying the MP system. This is not to say Knowles was not versatile or adaptive. Just that MP's take on defense is demonstrably less bounded. If I was an aspiring and devoted high school defensive player, I'd be thrilled to play in different kind of systems and handle all kinds of offenses. So I could see MP's appeal to recruits. Oh, BTW, those rings certainly won't hurt.

Finally, if you must, Chip is a better comparison than Charlie Weiss. He is hired for his football knowledge as a DC, not the whole package as a HC.

PS: I kinda see why he is not equiped to talk to media. Most people say "I know some people don't like it ... but personaly I think it does good things to the game" or something to that effect. MP just straight out said I love NIL and it changed the whole situation. That comments along would piss off a bunch of college football folks who loved the sports for its amateurishness (hope it's a word).
