DC Matt Patricia (Official Thread)

Really curious to see what he does with dudes like Styles, Reese and Downs.

I’m encouraged by Carpenter’s endorsement about communication because if you’re injecting NFL principles into this approach you need to be able to communicate it and have cadence. When you don’t, see Greg Schiano 2018.

I don’t feel any kind of way - brings some serious acumen. I’m interested and curious at the very least. I wasn’t particularly excited about the Knowles hire either.

Not going to whine, not going to do cartwheels. Let’s just see.

Here’s the thing I like most about Patricia: he’s going to be coaching Caleb Downs next year.

So he’s got that going for him.

Which is nice.
And the way he coaches, Patrick Chung was one of the defensive stars at NE, which should be Downs. And it’s been said that Downs was in on the decision making as well.

Im most interested in how the front 7 will look. Since he uses multiple fronts as well. Will he show LJsr how it will benefit the defense, or will he ride into the sunset
I can’t say I know much of anything about Matt, except that many people are pissed about the hire. So I guess I’m pissed too.

Where do we meet? Anybody have a good deal on torches?
The only people who are pissed are fans and some media members. According to Birm, everyone in the Woody is elated over this hire as well. What many seem to not realize is that fans for the most part are in their 30s or above, so they remember MP in one way. Most of the players were in middle school when MP was coaching the Lions and Patriots, so they have little reference to his past. Just how he can coach them. And they know the greatest NFL hired him twice. Some message board member who can be their dad or even grandpa isn’t going to convince a 20yo that MP can’t help them when he was hired by Day

In that Edelman podcast he stressed game planning every week based on the guys you have available. Last year's defense stayed healthy as far as I remember but with the NFL-length of college championship level football seasons, that's experience that could become invaluable. I'd much rather add Patricia to the staff than promote a GA, and I think all other fanbases (cocksuckers, all of them) are going to feel pretty fucking stupid a year from now about their smugness surrounding this hire.

I’m not gonna pretend to have info on the interviewing process, but if I’m Day, it’s relatively simple….

How will you use Caleb Downs to make our entire defense better?

Some are saying our D-line won’t be as good next year…..statistically speaking, I think we crush 2024’s sack totals. Not bc the DE’s are better but bc they’ll get an entire year of Caleb’s presence all over the field pre-alignment that we only saw in the last quarter of 2024 season.

In many respects….if Patricia is a “1 year rental” it’s prob a good thing bc we only have 1 year left of Downs and our entire defense is built around him. It’s actually kind of that simple…..

Exactly.

I could be the DC this season and being smart enough to say “get in there Caleb” would get me a job in 2026.

As I said earlier today, I'm happy with this hire. When people like Carp endorse the pick, I'm down with it. Last time I checked, Ryan Day knows a hell of a lot more about the sport than any of us and he obviously did a lot of homework here, given how long he took to make the decision.

For those who wanted to promote from within.... there's a hell of a lot more risk involved with that decision than hiring an accomplished NFL D Coordinator with 2 Super Bowl rings. Just sayin.

I think the DL could be better if multiple fronts are actually used. If you can line up for example:
Curry, MacDonald, Houston, Jackson
then switch to:
George, MacDonald, Houston, Curry
Or:
Hicks, Moore, Houston, Jackson

Have to wonder if recruiting will take a hit or not with this hire
Knowles literally did not land 1 recruit here. Not one. He was purely here to coach and didn’t mess with recruiting at all.

Btw, I saw Matt was on the Pat mcAfee and he looked great. Lost a bunch of weight, was super energetic and seems to really enjoy just talking ball.

Provided he can teach a complex NFL multiple system I think he could really resurrect his career.
