DC Matt Patricia (Official Thread)

Day values NFL experience. Plus the fact that CFB has basically become a professional sport at this point.
Current coaches with NFL experience either playing or coaching:
Day
Hartline
Bowen
Laurinitas
Walton
Patricia
You know this comes from a point of utmost respect for you over many years on BP - but on this specific hire. A hard no for me.

Being a name in the NFL at a point in time is not a determining factor to me. It helps, but I really don't see another check box that can be checked. His scheme is nothing like Knowles, no history in CFB or recruiting acumen, and no connection to Ohio. He wore a hoodie like everyone else in NE, that's about it.

Not directed at you at all, but I think this is a bad move.

Dude won three Super Bowl rings. Two as the DC and one as the Assistant OL coach for the Patriots. Spent 17 years at New England. A disciple of BB. We can all be sure that Coach Day had a good conversation with BB before he ever talked to Patricia. Coach did his due diligence on this.
Can't think of any coaching failures off the Belichick tree...

I think there needs to be a trust in Day with the hire. Let's see how it plays out.

This will be interesting to see what happens with the current system they have been running. Do we keep going or is the new DC restarting everything? I can't imagine it will be the latter.

Also, he is filling big shoes with the previous DC running the nation's top defense.

Let's hope he brings us the continued success!

I don't know a ton about him. I hear on a level, he's a real asshole. He clearly Peter Principled out as a NFL HC. But, the guy knows football, and defense in particular, real well. I don't know if he's suited for college, and I don't anticipate he's a long term hire anyway. We lost nothing on the recruiting trail with this hire, as Knowles didn't recruit either. Patricia, to the extent he does, can point to some solid defenses he called. And having worked for one of the greatest NFL coaches of all time gaining insights along the way, doesn't bother me a hell of a lot.

Again, not trying to change minds here but to provide perspectives from outside fanbases

Heard from someone who dealt with higher-ups in Eagles organization that was giving some background on Patricia to Ohio State through the process, here's their thoughts, paraphrased to avoid direct quote being used elsewhere.

I really enjoyed him and thought it was a real example of someone's reputation not matching who they were in person. Staff loved him. So smart and was super easy to work with. He Was in a bad spot with our on-field stuff but when it came to working here people love him
